Verdict: The $599.99 ROG Xbox Ally is a comfortable, Xbox-focused Windows 11 handheld PC—not a portable Xbox Series console. Its contoured grips, 60Wh battery, 120Hz display, broad PC-storefront support and Xbox Full Screen Experience make it an appealing first handheld for Xbox and Game Pass users. The Ryzen Z2 A chip, 16GB shared memory and 512GB SSD are less convincing for demanding AAA games, however. Buy it for comfort, battery capacity and Xbox integration; skip it if maximum frame rates, a maintenance-free console interface or large built-in storage matter most.

Quick verdict
- Recommended for: first-time handheld-PC buyers, Xbox PC Game Pass subscribers, cloud and Remote Play users, and players who prioritize grip comfort and battery capacity.
- Avoid if: you expect every Xbox console game to run locally, want SteamOS-like simplicity, require maximum AAA performance, or dislike Windows troubleshooting.
- Biggest strengths: controller-like ergonomics, 60Wh battery, bright 120Hz screen, Xbox-focused launcher, replaceable SSD and access to Steam, Epic and other Windows software.
- Biggest weaknesses: modest Ryzen Z2 A performance, 16GB shared RAM, 512GB storage and continuing Windows friction.
- Ally versus Ally X: the standard model costs $599.99 and uses Ryzen Z2 A, 16GB RAM, 512GB storage and a 60Wh battery. The Ally X uses Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB RAM, 1TB storage and an 80Wh battery, at approximately $1,000 in the independent review coverage cited here.
What the ROG Xbox Ally actually is
ASUS built the ROG Xbox Ally with Xbox and AMD as a portable Windows 11 gaming PC. It boots into the Xbox Full Screen Experience, links to an Xbox account and supports Xbox PC games, Game Pass, cloud gaming and Remote Play. Because it is still Windows, you can also install Steam, Epic Games Store and ordinary Windows applications. ASUS explains the software and hardware changes.
It is not an Xbox Series S or Series X in handheld form. An Xbox console game must have a compatible Windows PC version, Xbox Play Anywhere support, cloud availability or Remote Play from your home console. Console ownership alone does not create a local PC installation.

Design and ergonomics
The standard Ally’s strongest physical change is its wider, contoured grip. Textured handles and an Xbox-inspired button layout make it feel closer to a controller than a flat PC handheld. That shape can reduce hand fatigue in long sessions, although it also makes the device less pocketable. Stick placement, D-pad feel, face-button noise and rear-button reach remain personal preferences, so owners of the original ROG Ally or Steam Deck should try the shape before assuming it will suit every hand.
ASUS durability figures for the controls are company test claims, not independent endurance results. The device includes full-size analog sticks, Hall Effect triggers, bumpers, Xbox, View, Menu, Command Center and Library buttons, plus two assignable rear controls.
Display: excellent hardware with realistic limits
The 7-inch 1080p IPS panel combines 500-nit brightness, 120Hz refresh, FreeSync Premium variable refresh and an anti-reflective Gorilla Glass Victus surface. That combination is particularly useful for indies, older games, esports and desktop work. A 120Hz panel does not mean demanding AAA games will run at 120 frames per second: the integrated GPU often has to render below native resolution, use upscaling or target 30–60fps. Native 1080p also consumes more power than 720p or 900p.
Performance in games
Ryzen Z2 A is designed for handheld gaming rather than maximum-settings 1080p desktop performance. The integrated GPU shares the 16GB system memory with Windows, leaving less headroom for demanding games and multitasking. Results change substantially with the selected power mode, drivers, resolution, graphics preset, upscaling, frame generation and whether the charger is connected.

Games such as Hollow Knight, Balatro, Hades and Stardew Valley are a natural match. They can make better use of the 120Hz screen while drawing less power.
Competitive and moderately demanding games
Rocket League, Overwatch 2 and Forza Horizon 5 are more sensitive to frame-time consistency and settings. Wired reported that Forza Horizon 5 initially selected a 30fps cap and 720p-related behavior; raising targets could introduce judder. That finding illustrates why the display specification should not be mistaken for a guaranteed frame rate. Wired’s review provides the independent context.

Modern AAA games
Expect to tune Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur’s Gate 3, Starfield and similarly demanding games. A sensible starting point is 720p or 900p internal resolution, a lower preset, upscaling and a 30fps or 40fps cap. Frame generation can make motion look smoother where supported, but it does not improve native rendering quality or necessarily reduce input latency. ASUS’s “up to 20% performance increase” is a company claim based on selected games and settings, not a universal result.
Battery life
The 60Wh battery is a substantial capacity increase over the original ROG Ally’s 40Wh battery. ASUS claims up to 110% more battery life than the original under specified test conditions; that is not a general runtime guarantee. Wired reported roughly six hours in some mixed-use scenarios, while demanding local games drained the battery faster than cloud gaming or lightweight titles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsActual runtime depends on wattage mode, resolution, frame cap, brightness, Wi-Fi, speakers, lighting, drivers and whether the device is sleeping or actively playing. Treat light games and cloud sessions as the best-case use, typical 15–25W gaming as the middle ground and plugged-in Turbo play as the shortest-runtime case. A single unqualified “hours of battery life” figure is misleading.
Xbox Full Screen Experience and Windows
The Xbox Full Screen Experience boots directly to a controller-friendly library, gives the Xbox button access to Game Bar and widgets, and reduces desktop interaction during ordinary play. You can leave it for the regular Windows desktop whenever you need installers, settings, updates or another launcher. Microsoft describes the interface.
This is a useful shell, not a replacement operating system. Windows updates, driver and firmware installs, account sign-ins, launcher conflicts, permissions, anti-cheat restrictions, cursor work and occasional keyboard or mouse use remain part of ownership. Library aggregation also cannot erase differences in DRM, controller mapping or launcher behavior.
Xbox games, Game Pass, cloud and Remote Play
Local PC versions
Games downloaded through the Xbox app or Microsoft Store run as Windows PC games. Steam, Epic Games Store and other launchers work as they do on a small Windows computer.

Play Anywhere
Supported Xbox Play Anywhere titles can provide shared purchase rights and saves between Xbox and PC, but support is title-specific.
Cloud Gaming
Xbox Cloud Gaming can bypass the Ally’s local GPU and storage limits and may use less battery than running a demanding game locally. Wired reported consistent 60fps cloud play in its testing. Your experience still depends on Game Pass eligibility, Wi-Fi quality, latency, image compression and Microsoft’s service conditions, so it is a poor fit for unreliable travel connections.
Remote Play
Remote Play streams supported games installed on an enabled Xbox console over the internet. It requires the console, network access and suitable connectivity; it does not turn the Ally into a local console.
Storage and upgrades
The 512GB SSD is the standard model’s most immediate practical limitation. Windows and recovery partitions reduce usable space, and modern AAA games can exceed 100GB; Wired found Forza Horizon 5 used roughly one-quarter of available storage in its testing context. The M.2 2280 drive is replaceable, giving multi-storefront and Game Pass users a sensible upgrade path. Plan for cloning or reinstalling Windows and recovery if you replace it. A microSD card is useful for smaller games, media and secondary storage, but demanding titles may be better kept on the internal SSD.
Docking and TV play in 2026
Microsoft’s April 30, 2026 update improved docking behavior: gameplay defaults to the TV display, the handheld screen can turn off automatically, and resolution, refresh rate and HDR output are optimized. Certain smart TVs can enable gaming features automatically. Microsoft says the ROG Bulwark Dock supports HDR10 and VRR under the stated setup conditions. Read the docking update.
Results still depend on the dock, charger, cable, firmware and display. Auto SR was described in that update as a preview for Xbox Insiders on the Ally X, not a standard-Ally feature. Verify compatibility before buying a dock for HDR, VRR or high-refresh output.

ROG Xbox Ally versus ROG Xbox Ally X
| Feature | ROG Xbox Ally | ROG Xbox Ally X |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Ryzen Z2 A | Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme |
| Memory | 16GB | 24GB |
| Storage | 512GB SSD | 1TB SSD |
| Battery | 60Wh | 80Wh |
| Review-period price signal | $599.99 U.S. ASUS listing | Approximately $1,000 in Wired’s coverage; verify current price |
Pay for the Ally X when demanding AAA games, 24GB memory, 1TB storage, the larger battery and model-specific features justify roughly a $400 premium. For indies, older games, cloud play and ordinary PC gaming, the standard Ally is the more rational value.
ROG Xbox Ally versus Steam Deck and other handhelds
Choose a Steam Deck if your library is mainly on Steam and you value SteamOS, suspend/resume and an appliance-like workflow over Windows compatibility and Xbox integration. Choose another Windows handheld if its exact current model offers a preferred screen format, more memory or a faster processor. Compare official current specifications and prices rather than relying on older launch deals. Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion handhelds are useful starting points.

Who should buy it?
Buy it if you are an Xbox or Game Pass user
The combination of Xbox libraries, cloud gaming, Remote Play and a controller-like interface is the clearest reason to choose this model.
Buy it if this is your first handheld PC
The full-screen Xbox shell makes Windows less intimidating while preserving access to every major PC storefront.
Skip it as an original ROG Ally upgrade unless comfort is the priority
The meaningful gains are ergonomics, battery capacity and software integration; owners seeking a transformative performance jump should look at the Ally X or another higher-end device.
Skip it if you want a console appliance or maximum AAA performance
Steam Deck is the better fit for SteamOS simplicity, while the Ally X or another high-end Windows handheld is better suited to performance-first buyers.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Final verdict: is the ROG Xbox Ally worth it?
Yes, for the right buyer. At $599.99, the ROG Xbox Ally is a well-rounded entry into handheld PC gaming when comfort, Xbox services and battery capacity matter more than top-end frame rates. It is particularly compelling for Game Pass subscribers, cloud and Remote Play users, and people who want one device for Xbox, Steam, Epic and Windows applications.
It is not a portable Xbox console, a SteamOS appliance or a high-end AAA powerhouse. If those are your expectations, choose a different product—or move up to the Ally X. For everyone else, the standard Ally’s compromises are acceptable provided you budget for storage expansion and accept occasional Windows maintenance.
