Best Terraria Server Hosting Providers in 2026

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universally best Terraria host. The right choice depends on your platform, vanilla or modded setup, player count, region, backup needs and whether the server must stay online when nobody is playing. For most private groups, BisectHosting is the strongest managed shortlist option; Shockbyte has the clearest low-cost published plans; Nodecraft is useful when you want hibernation or mobile control; and Game Host Bros is better suited to larger, RAM-hungry communities. These are fit-based recommendations, not independent performance rankings.

How to choose a Terraria host

1. Confirm the exact platform combination

PC and macOS players generally use the desktop server ecosystem, while mobile and console compatibility depends on the game version, server software and the host’s implementation. Steam support does not automatically mean console support. Shockbyte advertises Steam, mobile, tModLoader, TShock and cross-platform features, but you should ask support to confirm your exact combination before paying. Game Host Bros identifies Steam and Apple support; that is not evidence of universal cross-play. Check the current Terraria multiplayer documentation and the provider’s answer for your versions.

2. Choose vanilla, tModLoader or TShock

  • Vanilla is the official server software without gameplay mods.
  • tModLoader is the mod platform for content packs such as Calamity and Thorium. Every player needs compatible mod versions and, in many cases, the same collection.
  • TShock emphasizes administration, permissions, commands, moderation and plugins rather than content mods.

One-click installation does not synchronize every player’s client. Some tModLoader settings are client-side in the ModConfigs directory, according to BisectHosting’s Terraria FAQ.

3. Price the renewal, not just the first month

Record the normal recurring amount, billing interval, tax treatment, backup charges, dedicated-IP fees, relocation costs and refund restrictions. Apex and Nodecraft show especially important differences between introductory and renewal pricing. Shockbyte’s quarterly and annual discounts are separate from its monthly prices.

4. Match resources to the workload

World size, concurrent players, mod count, automated builds, plugins and world-generation activity all affect resource use. A player-slot number is not a performance guarantee, and “unlimited” slots still face finite CPU, memory and network capacity.

5. Select a region for the group

Choose the practical location nearest most players, not necessarily the buyer. Check whether the location is in stock, available on your plan and movable later. BisectHosting advertises 21 locations and says relocation can be requested by ticket. Game Host Bros lists North America, Europe, Australia and Asia, while marking some locations as restocking.

6. Verify persistence and administration

Look for version switching, world upload, configuration editing, logs, operator management, scheduled restarts, backup scheduling and FTP or SFTP. Also determine whether the service hibernates. A rented machine can be online continuously while Terraria’s world hibernates when empty; the server documentation describes that behavior.

Provider-by-provider recommendations

BisectHosting: best overall managed shortlist choice

BisectHosting has Terraria-specific documentation covering vanilla, tModLoader and TShock, plus advertised automated updates, player-management tools, NVMe storage, DDoS protection, 21 locations and 24/7 support. Its documentation explains FTP world transfers and switching server versions. The provider claims an average 15-minute ticket wait; that is a vendor claim, not an independent measurement. The reviewed product page did not expose a clear current price table, so verify RAM, renewal price, player policy, backups and refunds before ordering.

Shockbyte: best transparent budget option

On Aug. 16, 2026, Shockbyte listed a 2 GB vanilla plan for up to four players at $4.99/month, a 4 GB modded plan for up to 12 players at $9.99/month, and a custom plan with 5 GB or more for 15+ players at $12/month. The page also advertises tModLoader, TShock, automatic backups, full FTP, DDoS protection, 24/7 support, a 72-hour self-serve refund and 99.9% uptime. Those uptime and support figures are provider statements. This is a sensible starting point for a small group, but confirm real location availability and the exact cross-platform setup.

Nodecraft: best for hibernation or mobile management

Nodecraft’s Lite plans shut down when unused and can be resumed through “Wake & Play.” The 2 GB Lite listing showed $4.17 for the first month and $5.96/month thereafter; 4 GB showed $8.34 first month and $11.92 renewal. Pro plans remain online, include a static IP and automated tasks: 2 GB was listed at $6.99 first month and $9.98 renewal, while 4 GB was $13.99 and $19.98. Nodecraft also advertises tModLoader, a mobile app, a control panel and manual cloud backups on Pro. Lite suits intermittent groups, not a community expecting a permanently available server.

Game Host Bros: best starting point for larger modded groups

The published tiers were 4 GB for $7.99, 8 GB for $15.99 and 12 GB for $23.99 per month. The provider advertises 24/7 hosting, vanilla/tModLoader switching, one-click Steam Workshop installation, SFTP, a web file browser, free transfers, DDoS protection and a seven-day money-back guarantee. It reports 99.7%–99.9% uptime over the previous 12 months; that is self-reported. Resource-based plans can be attractive when fixed slot limits are restrictive, but check CPU details and whether your preferred region is currently restocking.

Apex Hosting: best when premium hardware is justified

Apex listed 1 GB at $2.99 first month and $3.99 recurring, 2 GB at $5.99 and $7.99, 4 GB at $11.24 and $14.99, and an EX tier with 16 GB and four dedicated vCores at $53.99 and $71.99. It advertises automated backups and updates, DDoS protection, 24/7 support, FTP, a free subdomain and a mobile/desktop panel. The 1 GB tier is a poor bet for demanding modpacks; EX is excessive for most small vanilla groups.

ScalaCube: straightforward six-slot starter

ScalaCube advertised a lowest plan of $4.80/month for six player slots, excluding VAT, with one-click installation. Because the public page exposed less detail about hardware, backup retention, renewal pricing and mod support, verify those terms if migration or modded play matters.

Hostinger VPS: best self-managed route for technical users

Hostinger’s Terraria guide presents a VPS approach rather than a managed Terraria product. You gain operating-system and service control, but you must install and update the server, secure the machine, open firewall rules, design backups and solve mod or version failures. It is useful if you already administer Linux or plan to run multiple services; it is not the easiest beginner option.

How much RAM does Terraria hosting need?

The Terraria documentation lists 500 MB free RAM for a small world in its documented environment. That is a basic requirement, not a recommendation for heavy modded play. Use these buying heuristics instead:

Terraria - Nintendo 3DS
  • Dig!: Gather, transform, and utilize raw materials as you explore an assortment of distinct biomes and structures. Each world is unique, so you never know what you will find!
  • Fight!: Wield a vast arsenal of weaponry and armor - from swords to magic spells to firearms and beyond - as you triumph over the enemy hordes that are intent on your destruction!
  • Build!: Construct the world you desire! From simple dwellings to immense fortresses to intricate machinery, the choice is yours! Become the architect of your very own world!
RAM Reasonable starting use
1 GB Small vanilla test server or very small group, subject to the host and version
2 GB Small vanilla group
4 GB Modded Terraria or a larger world
6–8 GB Heavier mod collections, more concurrent players or additional server software
12–16 GB Large communities or unusually demanding modded setups

Start modestly, watch actual memory and CPU use, then upgrade. More RAM alone does not prove lower latency; CPU allocation, location and software behavior can matter more.

Managed hosting, Host & Play or a VPS?

Option Use it when Trade-offs
Host & Play Short sessions, LAN play or a group that plays together The host’s game must remain running; limited persistence and administration
Managed host You want a persistent world, panel, backups and support without networking work Recurring cost and provider limits
VPS You need infrastructure control and can administer a server You handle installation, security, port forwarding, updates, backups and recovery

For Host & Play, open Terraria, choose Multiplayer, then Host & Play, select or create a world, set a password and invite friends. The official server guide identifies this as the simplest route.

Moving an existing world safely

  1. Stop the server and make a separate copy of the world before changing software or mods.
  2. Upload the world through FTP, SFTP or the host’s file manager.
  3. Match the configuration’s world= path and worldname to the uploaded file. BisectHosting specifically documents this requirement.
  4. Install the same tModLoader build and mod versions on the server and every client.
  5. Start the server and test with one player before inviting everyone.
  6. Download your own fresh world backup after the migration succeeds.

Common failures include the wrong directory, filename or extension, a configuration still pointing to another world, or a world created by an incompatible game or mod version. Set difficulty before generating a new world; BisectHosting notes that it cannot be changed later through the same normal configuration path.

Self-hosting technical basics

A dedicated Terraria server normally uses TCP port 7777. The documentation also advises opening TCP and UDP 7777 with a cloud provider; home hosting generally requires router port forwarding and firewall rules. The documented default maximum is 16 players, although startup settings or serverconfig.txt can change it. The official download path is version-sensitive; recheck Terraria’s download area rather than relying on an old filename. Keep the process supervised, back up before updates and never expose a server without securing the host.
