Verdict: Nvidia did announce its GeForce RTX 50 Series at the CES 2025 keynote on January 6, 2025. The desktop lineup included the RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070, so the original “allegedly” wording is now obsolete and the RTX 5070 Ti should not be omitted. Announcement day was not the retail launch date for every card.
Nvidia based the family on its Blackwell architecture and also presented mobile RTX 50-series GPUs for laptops. The company’s announcement and launch schedule is documented in its CES 2025 release.

What Nvidia actually announced at CES
Nvidia’s CES keynote took place on January 6, 2025. It introduced the consumer GeForce RTX 50 Series, built on Blackwell, across desktop and laptop form factors. For desktop buyers, the announced models were the RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070.
The RTX 5070 Ti matters because the shorter headline naming only the 5090, 5080 and 5070 leaves out one of the four desktop launch products. Laptop GPUs were announced as a separate product category; an RTX 5090 laptop GPU should not be assumed to match a desktop RTX 5090 in power, specifications or performance.
#1 Best Overall
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
Nvidia’s overview also describes fifth-generation Tensor Cores, fourth-generation RT Cores and new neural-rendering capabilities. Its headline specifications for the flagship are manufacturer claims, not independent benchmark results: Nvidia said the RTX 5090 has 92 billion transistors and more than 3,352 trillion AI operations per second.

Announcement versus retail availability
CES was the announcement platform. Retail availability followed in stages, and Nvidia’s initial February window for the RTX 5070 was later superseded by its March 5 launch date.
| GPU | CES announcement | Announced U.S. starting MSRP | Initial availability announced | Historical retail launch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RTX 5090 | January 6, 2025 | $1,999 | January 2025 | January 30, 2025 |
| RTX 5080 | January 6, 2025 | $999 | January 2025 | January 30, 2025 |
| RTX 5070 Ti | January 6, 2025 | $749 | February 2025 | February 20, 2025 |
| RTX 5070 | January 6, 2025 | $549 | February 2025 | March 5, 2025 |
The January 30 timing for the 5090 and 5080 and the later launches are recorded in Nvidia’s RTX 50-series announcement guide and 5090/5080 availability notice. Nvidia also said RTX 50-series laptops would begin appearing in March 2025.
Prices and core specifications
These are announced U.S. starting MSRPs, generally associated with Founders Edition or entry configurations. They are not guarantees of stock or final checkout prices. Board-partner designs, taxes, regional pricing, tariffs, retailer markups and shortages can all raise the amount paid.
| GPU | Memory | Position | Announced U.S. MSRP |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTX 5090 | 32GB GDDR7 | Flagship enthusiast and creator workloads | $1,999 |
| RTX 5080 | 16GB GDDR7 | High-end gaming | $999 |
| RTX 5070 Ti | 16GB GDDR7 | Upper-performance mainstream enthusiast | $749 |
| RTX 5070 | 12GB GDDR7 | High-end mainstream gaming | $549 |
Before buying, verify the exact board’s dimensions, power connector, recommended PSU and cooling requirements. RTX 5090 systems in particular may require substantial case clearance, airflow and power capacity. Founders Edition dimensions and partner-board designs are not interchangeable assumptions.
What Blackwell and DLSS 4 add
Multi Frame Generation
Nvidia promoted DLSS 4 as the defining software feature of the generation. It combines Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction with Multi Frame Generation, which uses AI to create additional displayed frames. Nvidia also highlighted neural rendering improvements and broader support for Reflex.
Generated frames can raise the displayed frame rate, but they do not replace the game’s underlying rendered frames. Native GPU performance, CPU limits, image quality and input latency still matter. A benchmark must state whether it uses native rendering, upscaling, frame generation or all three. Details are in Nvidia’s RTX 50-series feature overview.

CES demonstrations included RTX Neural Shaders, RTX Neural Faces and RTX Mega Geometry, alongside Reflex 2, creator tools, developer tools and Nvidia ACE local-AI demonstrations. These capabilities do not all have identical availability: some require a supported game or application, while others were demonstrations of technology Nvidia wants developers to adopt.

- OC mode: 2580 MHz Default mode: 2550 MHz(Boost clock)
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- SFF-Ready Enthusiast GeForce Card
- Axial-tech fans feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
Nvidia also positioned Blackwell for creators, developers and AI-PC workloads, not only conventional rasterized gaming. Its CES creator and generative-AI coverage provides the company’s implementation context.
How to interpret the performance claims
Nvidia said the RTX 5090 could be up to twice as fast as the RTX 4090 in supported scenarios. “Up to” is not an across-the-board native-gaming result. The outcome depends on resolution, ray tracing, game selection, driver version and whether DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation are enabled.
For a meaningful upgrade decision, compare independent results across native rasterization, ray tracing, DLSS-enabled performance, frame-generation latency, power consumption, thermals, VRAM and productivity workloads. Nvidia’s launch claims should be read as controlled manufacturer claims rather than universal benchmark guarantees.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich RTX 50-series card fits which buyer?
RTX 5090
- Best fit: maximum 4K or higher-resolution gaming, heavy ray tracing, rendering and AI workloads.
- Trade-offs: the $1,999 starting MSRP, very high power and cooling demands, large cards and poor value for a 1080p or ordinary 1440p system.
RTX 5080
- Best fit: premium 4K gaming and creator work without the flagship price.
- Trade-offs: 16GB of VRAM and a $999 starting MSRP; its value depends on actual street pricing and the gap to the 5090.
RTX 5070 Ti
- Best fit: high-refresh 1440p, entry-level 4K and buyers who specifically want 16GB.
- Trade-offs: it becomes less attractive if priced close to an RTX 5080 or a discounted previous-generation flagship.
RTX 5070
- Best fit: high-end 1440p and upgrades from older midrange cards.
- Trade-offs: 12GB may constrain some high-resolution textures, future games and AI workloads; DLSS 4 benefits depend on software support.
Availability, market pricing and alternatives
Nvidia described limited Founders Edition availability worldwide, but that did not mean identical launch-day stock, pricing or board-partner selection in every country. Separate preorders, retailer inventory and laptop shipments from desktop-card availability.
Actual market prices can diverge sharply from MSRP. Later reporting found RTX 50-series prices, especially RTX 5090 listings, substantially above the original $1,999 starting point. Those are market observations, not official Nvidia prices; check the retailer, exact model number and stock at the time of purchase. See Tom’s Hardware’s price analysis and PC Gamer’s price watch.
Discounted RTX 4090, RTX 4080 Super, RTX 4070 Ti Super and RTX 4070 Super cards may offer a better total value when 50-series cards are inflated. AMD Radeon cards can be compelling where raster performance or VRAM matters more than Nvidia-specific ray tracing and DLSS features; Intel Arc remains relevant for lower-cost builds, subject to game and application compatibility. Compare current prices and the software you actually use rather than assuming one vendor wins every workload.
Remember the total upgrade cost. A 5090 may require a new PSU, case or GPU support bracket, while a 5070 paired with a 1080p monitor may deliver little visible benefit. Creators should also confirm CUDA, OptiX, encoder and application support before choosing on gaming performance alone.

The historical record confirms the CES 2025 announcement, but “to allegedly launch” is no longer accurate wording. Nvidia announced four desktop cards—RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070—on January 6, 2025. The 5090 and 5080 reached retail on January 30, the 5070 Ti on February 20, and the 5070 on March 5. Treat the launch MSRPs as reference points, and judge any purchase by current price, VRAM, power requirements, software support and measured performance.
