The correct alternative depends on what you mean by “files”: screenshots and clips, saved games, installed games, or other data. Captures can sometimes be shared or re-recorded, saves can be synchronized to another PlayStation through PlayStation Plus, and an already modified PS4 may support FTP. None of those options turns a retail PS4 into a normal PC network drive.
First identify what you want to move

Screenshots and video clips
Sony’s supported method is USB
Sony’s current instructions tell you to open Capture Gallery, highlight a screenshot or clip, press OPTIONS, and copy it to USB storage: PS4 Capture Gallery instructions. The PS4 does not document a network folder, browser download, or direct PC export for Capture Gallery files.
The PS4 sharing tools can edit and send captures to available services, but service availability varies by software version, account, and region. Sony’s sharing guidance is here: PS4 editing and sharing instructions. If a service lets you retrieve the posted image or clip from your PC, that is a sharing workaround—not a direct transfer from the PS4’s storage—and it may resize or recompress the file.
Do not assume the PlayStation App syncs PS4 captures
Sony’s current PlayStation App documentation describes automatic capture uploads and downloads for PS5 captures: PlayStation App. It does not describe the same automatic capture-cloud feature for existing PS4 Capture Gallery files. Treat the app as an unreliable solution for historical PS4 captures.

Use a capture card for future recordings
A capture card records the PS4’s HDMI output on your computer. It is useful for new gameplay recordings, streaming, or a long-term setup that saves footage directly to the PC. It cannot retrieve the original screenshots or clips already stored in Capture Gallery, and the result is a new recording rather than the original file.
For one capture, sharing may be the least complicated workaround
If you only need one or two items, use an available built-in sharing destination and download the result on your computer, provided that destination still works for your account and region. Photographing the television is a last resort: it is not file transfer and produces substantially worse quality.

Upload a PS4 save to online storage
With an eligible PlayStation Plus subscription, sign in to the user that owns the save and follow these current PS4 menu steps:

- Open Settings.
- Select Application Data Management.
- Select Saved Data in System Storage.
- Select Upload to Online Storage.
- Choose the game and save file, then confirm the upload.
Sony documents the upload and download paths at PS4 PlayStation Plus online storage. That storage is intended to move saves between PlayStation consoles. Sony currently states a limit of up to 100 GB of PS4 saved data and 1,000 PS4 saved-data files; these are documentation limits and can change.
Enable automatic save uploads
- Go to Settings > Power Saving Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Go to Settings > Application Data Management > Auto-Upload.
- Enable automatic uploads for the relevant user.
Automatic upload applies to supported saved-data management. It does not automatically send screenshots or videos to a PC.
Why this does not give you a PC save file
PlayStation Plus cloud storage is not exposed as an ordinary Windows or macOS file share. Sony’s documented PC save-management workflow concerns games streamed through PlayStation Plus, not downloading ordinary PS4 console-save files to a computer: PlayStation Plus streamed-game save transfer.

A PC edition may use a different save format or account system. Sony’s current PC-games support information says transferring save data between PS4/PS5 versions and PlayStation Studios PC versions is not generally possible: PlayStation PC-games support. A particular game can still offer its own cross-save or cross-progression system, so check that game’s publisher documentation.
Installed games and general files
You cannot normally copy an installed PS4 game to a PC and use it as a PC installation. The PC version is a separate product, and discussing package extraction or redistribution would not create a supported transfer method.

The same limitation applies to miscellaneous internal data. A retail PS4 does not present its internal drive as a Windows or macOS network share, and there is no supported “send any file to PC” feature.

What a modified PS4 can do with FTP
An already jailbroken or homebrew-enabled PS4 may be able to run an FTP server over your local network. Community reports describe environments such as GoldHEN exposing an FTP service, often on port 2121, but the port, directories, permissions, and available files depend on the firmware and payload. This is not available on ordinary retail software. Do not modify a console merely to retrieve a few screenshots: exploits are firmware-dependent, unofficial, and may affect PSN access, stability, warranty or support, and normal use of games and services. Never use FTP to obtain or distribute copyrighted games or unauthorized packages.
High-level FTP workflow for a PS4 that is already modified
- Confirm that the console is already running a compatible homebrew/FTP environment.
- Connect the PS4 and computer to the same trusted router, avoiding guest-network isolation.
- Start the PS4’s FTP server and note the IP address and port shown on the console. Do not assume port 2121 or a universal folder path.
- Install an FTP client such as FileZilla Client on the computer. The client does not provide an FTP server or enable FTP on a stock PS4.
- Enter the displayed address, port, and any credentials required by that server.
- Download files to the PC first. Verify they open correctly before deleting or changing anything on the console.
- Disable the FTP server when finished and keep the service limited to your trusted local network.
Remote Play and Media Player are not file-transfer tools
Remote Play
Remote Play lets a compatible PC or Mac control and stream the PS4 over a network. Sony’s PS4 support overview describes that control-and-play function, not storage export: PS4 support. Remote Play cannot expose the internal drive as a computer folder.

Media Player and DLNA
PS4 Media Player can play content from USB devices or network media servers. The documented direction is a server or device to the PS4, not PS4 internal storage back to the PC: PS4 Media Player support. If your PC cannot browse the PS4 while Media Player is open, that is expected—the PS4 is looking for media shared by the computer.
Troubleshooting unofficial network transfers
- PC cannot see the PS4: a stock PS4 is not a network share. On a modified console, check the displayed IP, port, and that both devices are on the same non-isolated network.
- FTP connects but files are missing: the server may expose only selected directories, require additional permissions, or be running without the necessary homebrew session. Protected or encrypted areas may not be readable.
- The session stops: keep the console awake, restart the FTP server, avoid rest mode, and reconnect if the exploit session expired.
- The transfer stalls: use Ethernet where possible, enable resume support in the FTP client, copy smaller groups, check PC free space, and verify that both devices remain connected to the same network.
- Files are damaged: download a copy and open or checksum it on the PC before removing anything from the PS4.
Best option for each situation

The Bottom Line
If your PS4 is unmodified, there is no official USB-free file browser or general PS4-to-PC export. Use sharing for an occasional capture, PlayStation Plus for console-to-console saves, and a capture card for future recordings. FTP is a possible specialist workaround only on a compatible modified console.
