Zelda’s Tri Rod lets her copy objects and enemies into “echoes,” then summon those copies to fight, build paths, block hazards, and solve problems. That flexibility gives this 2024 Nintendo Switch adventure a distinct identity, even though recurring overworld frame-rate dips, a lighter story, and a few underused systems keep it from perfection.

This is a top-down Zelda adventure in which Zelda—not Link—is the playable hero. Rifts are spreading through Hyrule and pulling people into the Still World, including Link and Zelda’s father. Zelda receives the Tri Rod from the fairy Tri and uses it to copy things she encounters into a growing catalogue of echoes.
The miniature, toy-like visual style and musical presentation are among the game’s most consistently praised elements. Nintendo Life awarded it 9/10, calling it “a near-perfect marriage of the old and the new.” GameSpot also awarded 9/10, describing it as a game that “establishes its own identity” for Princess Zelda.

#1 Best Overall
How the echo system works
Any useful object or enemy that Zelda learns can become a tool. You select an echo from the catalogue and place it in the world, subject to the Tri Rod’s available energy. Early examples include making platforms, stacking furniture, creating bridges, blocking projectiles, and summoning monsters to attack.
Puzzles become experiments
Echoes rarely prescribe one solution. A gap might be crossed with beds, water blocks, or a flying creature; a pressure plate might be held by an object, a monster, or a combination of both. The result feels closer to a compact construction system than to the single-item progression gates common in older top-down Zelda games.
Combat by command
Most fighting is indirect. Zelda places echoes and lets them engage enemies while she repositions, avoids attacks, and manages the battlefield. As Tri levels up, the game allows more simultaneous echoes and expands the catalogue’s practical value.

- Save the Kingdom of Hyrule - this time as Princess Zelda - in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom for Nintendo Switch
- In this new installment of The Legend of Zelda range, it's up to Zelda and her wisdom to save the kingdom of Hyrule. Its inhabitants disappear into strange cracks - and with them a very specific sword fighter.
- Step into the role of Princess Zelda and save Hyrule from a mysterious force. Use their wisdom and tri rod to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.
- Creativity is the key to success: discover the power of Tri-Stab and create imitations of objects and creatures, so-called echoes. Use these echoes to overcome obstacles and take over in battle.
- Beautifully designed world full of secrets and captivating story full of adventures.
Zelda can also use Swordfighter Form for direct attacks. This form is limited by an upgradeable energy gauge, so it supplements rather than replaces echo-based combat. Players who want constant swordplay may find the arrangement less immediately satisfying than Link’s traditional combat, but it supports the game’s central idea: Zelda wins by choosing and combining tools.

Dungeons, overworld, and exploration
Traditional dungeons return
Echoes of Wisdom brings back recognizable Zelda dungeon structure: themed interiors, locked doors, keys, environmental puzzles, and major encounters. That structure gives the open-ended echo mechanics a clear framework and provides the sense of progression longtime fans expect.
A more open Hyrule
Between dungeons, Hyrule is more exploratory and experimental. Echoes let you approach obstacles from different angles, and optional discoveries reward players who inspect corners rather than follow a single route. This combination—classic dungeon logic inside a freer overworld—is one of the game’s strongest design choices.
Systems that feel secondary
Not every feature receives equal development. Reviews noted that automatons and some secondary systems feel less central than the echo mechanic. The game is at its best when it asks what can be built or summoned; activities that sit outside that loop can feel comparatively thin.
Performance and technical issues
The most consistent technical criticism concerns the overworld. Nintendo Life reported frequent frame-rate drops, and GameSpot also cited performance issues. Indoor areas generally run more smoothly, while traveling through larger outdoor spaces can produce visible dips.

- Save the kingdom of Hyrule, this time with the wisdom of Princess Zelda! The people of Hyrule are being swallowed by strange crevices that have arisen, with a certain swordsman among the missing. Now it's up to Princess Zelda to save her kingdom in a new story from The Legend of Zelda !
- Team up with Tri and use the power of Tri's scepter to create "echoes", which are copies of objects found in the environment. Then recreate these echoes whenever you want to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.
- Create echoes like blocks of water to reach new heights, bridge old beds, throw rocks at enemies, or find your own creative combination of echoes to do everything your own way. You can even create monster echoes to fight alongside you in combat!
What this means in practice
- Best performance: dungeon and interior spaces are typically steadier than the overworld.
- Most noticeable weakness: outdoor traversal can stutter often enough to break an otherwise polished presentation.
- Risk management: save regularly, especially before major story steps, because one review reported a progression-blocking bug.
How long is Echoes of Wisdom?
Nintendo Life estimates the main adventure at approximately 15–20 hours. Optional exploration, collecting additional echoes, side activities, and higher-difficulty play can extend that figure. The estimate describes a focused playthrough rather than a completionist total.
Who should play it?
| Player type | Fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Zelda fan | Strong fit | Traditional dungeons, keys, puzzles, bosses, and a familiar top-down perspective are all present. |
| Puzzle and systems enthusiast | Excellent fit | Echo combinations support multiple solutions instead of a single required tool. |
| Player seeking direct sword combat | Mixed fit | Swordfighter Form exists, but echoes remain the main way to attack. |
| Performance-sensitive player | Proceed cautiously | Reviewers repeatedly observed overworld frame-rate dips. |
| Story-first player | Mixed fit | The premise is appealing, but the narrative is lighter and more familiar than the mechanics. |
Difficulty, replay value, and extras
Hero Mode provides a tougher option for experienced players. Its value is greatest when you already understand the echo catalogue and want more pressure while exploring and fighting.
The game’s replay value comes less from alternate story branches than from trying different solutions. A puzzle solved with one clever stack of objects can often be revisited with a completely different creature or construction. That expressive problem-solving is the feature most likely to make a second playthrough feel fresh.

How it compares with other Zelda games
| Category | Echoes of Wisdom | Traditional expectation |
|---|---|---|
| Puzzle freedom | Object- and monster-based solutions with many viable routes | Often centered on a dungeon item and a more prescribed sequence |
| Combat agency | Summoned echoes do most fighting; Swordfighter Form offers limited direct attacks | Link’s sword and shield usually provide continuous direct control |
| Dungeon structure | Classic dungeons within a more open, experimental overworld | More consistently structured progression between major areas |
| Performance | Reviewers observed dips in outdoor areas; interiors are generally smoother | Varies by game and hardware |
| Length | About 15–20 hours for the main adventure, according to Nintendo Life | Varies widely by entry and completion goals |
Verdict
Echoes of Wisdom succeeds because its central idea changes how Zelda problems are solved. Zelda’s starring role is more than a cosmetic swap: the Tri Rod turns combat, traversal, and puzzle solving into acts of selection, placement, and improvisation. The return of traditional dungeons keeps that freedom from becoming shapeless, while the overworld gives you room to experiment.
It is not flawless. Frequent outdoor frame-rate dips, fiddly echo selection when the catalogue grows, a comparatively light story, and underdeveloped secondary systems are real limitations. Even so, Nintendo Life and GameSpot both rated it 9/10, and their praise aligns with the game’s strongest quality: it feels recognizably Zelda while opening a genuinely new way to play.
