The “open-source Nintendo DS Bluetooth adapter” was a historical project usually called DS Bluetooth, also associated with DS Brut and DS GIG. It was a custom Slot-1 cartridge that let Nintendo DS homebrew communicate with Bluetooth-connected electronics such as GPS receivers, robots, sensors, servos, motors and mobile phones. It was not a retail Bluetooth dongle for headphones, controllers or ordinary DS games.

The project was announced in 2009 as open hardware and software, but the known project and download pages now return 404 errors. You can investigate it as a preservation project or design a new equivalent, but there is no verified current source for an assembled cartridge or complete build.

What was the DS Bluetooth adapter?

DS Bluetooth was created by Gottfried Haider and Gordan Savicic as an open platform for electronics enthusiasts, artists and game designers. The project combined a small custom cartridge, Bluetooth electronics and Nintendo DS homebrew software. A Make: report dated October 20, 2009 described released schematics, project materials and a GPL-licensed Nintendo DS software library (Make: report). UCLA’s archive identifies the related names DS Bluetooth, DS Brut and DS GIG and lists applications involving external electronics (UCLA Game Lab).

“Open source” should be read precisely: the software library was identified as GPL-licensed, and schematics and project materials were released. That does not prove that every PCB file, firmware image or hardware document used the same license.

It was a Slot-1 cartridge

The adapter plugged into the Nintendo DS game-card slot. It did not attach through USB, the headphone jack or the Game Boy Advance Slot-2 connector. A generic Bluetooth module cannot simply be placed in a cartridge shell and expected to work: the design must handle the Slot-1 interface, power, firmware and DS-side software.

What could it connect to?

The documented purpose was custom data exchange and control. Examples included:

  • GPS receivers
  • Robots and other moving machines
  • Sensors and experimental instruments
  • Servos and motors
  • UMTS mobile phones
  • Other Bluetooth-enabled electronics selected by the developer

This was a platform for a particular homebrew application to communicate with a particular external device. It was not a compatibility layer that automatically added Bluetooth to every DS game.

What the surviving descriptions do not establish

Accessible sources do not identify the original radio chipset, Bluetooth version, supported profiles, pairing method, security mode, antenna design, data rate or audio capability. Do not label the board as Bluetooth Classic, Bluetooth Low Energy, HID, Serial Port Profile or an audio transmitter without recovering its technical documentation.

Bluetooth was separate from the DS’s built-in wireless

Original DS hardware already included wireless networking. Older homebrew documentation describes that native function as 802.11b Wi‑Fi (DS homebrew guide). Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth use different protocols and device ecosystems.

  • Native Wi‑Fi: intended for DS multiplayer and network communication.
  • DS Bluetooth: an external cartridge for Bluetooth communication with custom hardware.
  • USB Bluetooth dongle: not a drop-in solution, because the DS is not a USB host with a ready-made Bluetooth driver.

Having a working DS Wi‑Fi game therefore says nothing about Bluetooth support. DSi hardware and software also differ from the original DS and DS Lite; current development libraries expose separate wireless implementations for NDS and DSi hardware (devkitPro Calico).

Is the original cartridge still available?

There is no verified current source for buying a complete DS Bluetooth cartridge. The historical Make: article links to the DSbrut project, whose Bluetooth page currently returns 404 (DSbrut Bluetooth page). UCLA’s project page still describes the work, but its download link leads to a 404 page (UCLA-linked download).

Item Current status
Original assembled cartridge Availability not verified.
Historical schematics and project materials Reportedly released in 2009, but a live authoritative copy is not verified.
GPL DS software library Historically identified by Make:, but a currently maintained official repository is not verified.
Modern replacement No authoritative direct replacement is established.

Can you still build one?

There are three different levels of certainty:

  • Confirmed: a Slot-1 DS Bluetooth project existed and was presented as open hardware and software.
  • Unverified: the original complete schematics, PCB layout, bill of materials, firmware and source archive are currently recoverable.
  • Technically possible: an engineer could design a new Slot-1 board and write compatible DS homebrew, but that would be a new recreation rather than a verified reproduction.

Do not publish or build from an unattributed binary or incomplete schematic. A cartridge can damage a DS through incorrect voltage, excessive current or bus wiring.

Responsible recovery workflow

  1. Start with the surviving Make: article and UCLA archive page.
  2. Search reputable web archives using all historical names: DS Bluetooth, DS Brut, DS GIG, Gottfried Haider and Gordan Savicic.
  3. Look specifically for schematics, PCB layouts, a bill of materials, firmware, the DS library and build instructions.
  4. Check every recovered file for a license, hardware revision, component substitutions and DS/DS Lite model notes.
  5. Label archived files as historical and separate them from any maintained modern repository.

What a modern recreation would require

The following is an engineering outline, not the original project’s verified specification:

  • A Slot-1-compatible circuit and safe cartridge connector arrangement
  • A Bluetooth-capable module or radio with documented electrical requirements
  • Power regulation suitable for the cartridge interface
  • Any required level shifting, protection and current limiting
  • DS-side driver code and an application protocol
  • A homebrew development environment and a way to launch test software
  • Testing on the exact DS model intended for use

Modern foundations include devkitPro Calico and libnds. nds-bootstrap can load DS/DSi software and homebrew in supported environments, but none of these projects is evidence of a driver for the historical Bluetooth cartridge.

Model compatibility

System What can safely be said
Nintendo DS (original/“Phat”) Relevant to the historical DS Slot-1 context; exact board and software compatibility is not verified.
Nintendo DS Lite Likely within the intended Slot-1 family, but a specific surviving compatibility test is not established.
Nintendo DSi Unknown. DSi hardware and software access differ from DS/DS Lite.
Nintendo 3DS family Unknown and should not be assumed from DS Slot-1 descriptions.

Choose the approach that matches your goal

Goal Most realistic direction
Preserve or study the 2009 project Recover archived files, verify licenses and revisions, then reproduce only from complete documentation.
DS online play or networking Use native DS Wi‑Fi and, where appropriate, community replacement services such as Kaeru.
Robotics and sensors Rebuild the concept around a maintained microcontroller bridge, accepting a separate board, cable or custom cartridge.
Bluetooth audio Design a separate audio-transmitter modification; DS Bluetooth’s documented uses do not establish audio streaming.
Bluetooth controllers Use a platform with a maintained controller stack or design a purpose-built bridge. BlueRetro is a broader retro-console project, not a documented Nintendo DS solution, and its original repository is archived (BlueRetro).
Readily available modern parts A different handheld or console is usually more practical than recreating an unavailable Slot-1 board.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Safety and software limitations

  • Ordinary commercial DS games will not automatically gain Bluetooth support; the application must know how to use the cartridge.
  • Do not assume a DS/DS Lite design works on DSi or 3DS.
  • Use current limiting and sacrificial hardware when testing recovered or newly designed boards.
  • Verify cartridge-slot voltage and bus behavior from reliable electrical documentation before connecting a radio module.
  • Do not infer Bluetooth profiles or pairing behavior from the project name alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BlueRetro a Nintendo DS replacement?

No. BlueRetro targets various retro consoles and computers, but Nintendo DS support is not documented; its original repository is archived.

The Bottom Line

DS Bluetooth was a real open-hardware Slot-1 project for DS homebrew and experimental electronics, not a modern plug-and-play accessory. In 2026, treat it as a historical design to recover and preserve. If you need dependable Bluetooth today, plan a new microcontroller-based architecture or choose hardware with native, maintained Bluetooth support.
