Nintendo’s warning is real, but it was issued on January 14, 2022, not as a new August 2026 alert. Nintendo said fraudulent websites copied its logo and appeared to be official stores while advertising Nintendo products, including Switch consoles, at steep discounts. Shoppers could lose money or expose personal information. Nintendo’s current support guidance still warns that unusually cheap products may be counterfeit or part of a scam.
What Nintendo actually warned about
In its January 14, 2022 announcement, Nintendo said websites were illegally using its logo and other branding to make the sites look company-operated. The sites claimed to sell Nintendo products, including Nintendo Switch systems, at substantial discounts.
Nintendo warned that buying from such sites could result in fraud and the improper collection of customers’ personal information. The announcement did not name specific domains, provide victim or loss totals, identify a confirmed criminal group, or say that Nintendo’s own network had been breached.
That date matters: reports circulating now should not present the 2022 announcement as a newly issued warning. The underlying risk remains current, however. Nintendo’s support guidance says products offered far below normal prices may be counterfeit or an attempt to steal money or personal information.

How a fake Nintendo store can fool shoppers
A scammer can copy Nintendo’s logo, product photographs, page layout and wording, then promote a console or game at an implausibly low price. Checkout may request a name, address, phone number, email address, card number or account credentials.

- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers

Possible outcomes include no delivery, a counterfeit or unrelated item, unauthorized charges, or later attempts to use the information collected. These are potential consequences of fraudulent shopping sites; Nintendo’s announcement did not document a single outcome for every visitor.
Red flags to check before paying
- Price: It is dramatically below prices at several established retailers. Nintendo does not set a fixed percentage at which a deal becomes fraudulent, so compare what is included and whether the item is new, used, refurbished or open-box.
- Web address: The domain was reached through an unsolicited ad, message or redirect, or it merely contains words such as “Nintendo,” “Switch” or “official.” A convincing domain is not proof of a genuine seller.
- Branding and copy: Logos and images appear alongside spelling errors, awkward language, mismatched policies or inconsistent contact details.
- Seller information: There is no independently verifiable address, customer-service history or clear returns policy.
- Payment pressure: The seller demands gift cards, cryptocurrency, a wire transfer or an off-platform payment app. The FTC identifies these as major online-shopping warning signs.
- Urgency: “Limited stock” or countdown timers pressure you to skip checks.
- Checkout mismatch: Payment moves to a different domain or asks for a Nintendo Account password or one-time code.
- Reviews: Testimonials exist only on the seller’s site, repeat identical language or cannot be verified elsewhere. Star ratings alone are not reliable because reviews can be fake.

How to verify a Nintendo purchase
- Start at a known Nintendo address by typing it yourself or using a saved bookmark, rather than following a social-media ad or unsolicited email.
- For digital games and downloads, use Nintendo eShop or Nintendo’s website. For physical products, independently locate an established retailer and check its seller identity.
- Read the complete domain name and compare the seller, address, returns terms and customer-service details. Do not rely on the logo, page design or padlock.
- Compare the total price, taxes, shipping, accessories and condition with multiple reputable sellers. A clearance, regional promotion or used console can legitimately cost less.
- On a marketplace, inspect the actual third-party seller. “Fulfilled by” a major retailer does not necessarily mean that retailer sold the item.
- Keep payment on a service offering meaningful dispute protection. Never send a Nintendo Account password or verification code to a shopping site.
Do not confuse different kinds of Nintendo scams
Spoofed websites
A fake site impersonates Nintendo itself. This is the type covered by Nintendo’s 2022 warning.
Marketplace listings
A legitimate marketplace can host an unauthorized seller offering a counterfeit game, accessory or console. Nintendo said in May 2025 that it was working with Mercari, Yahoo! Auctions/Yahoo! Flea Market and Rakuma in Japan to prevent improper Nintendo-related listings, including listings involving Nintendo Switch 2. That initiative is separate context, not evidence that those marketplaces operated the 2022 spoofed sites. Nintendo’s 2025 announcement

- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld

Digital-code and download scams
Sites promising free eShop credit, “code generators,” unauthorized downloads or a free game that requires a suspicious launcher are a separate fraud or piracy risk. Legitimate console-game downloads come through Nintendo eShop or Nintendo’s website.

Turn on two-step verification
On the Nintendo Account website, go to Sign-in and security settings, select Edit under 2-Step Verification, choose 2-Step Verification setup, install Google Authenticator, scan Nintendo’s QR code, enter the six-digit code and save the backup codes securely. Nintendo notes that this option is unavailable for certain child accounts subject to verifiable parental-consent laws. Full instructions: Nintendo two-step verification.
How to report the scam
- Report unauthorized transactions to your bank, card issuer, PayPal or payment app.
- Report U.S. online-shopping fraud to the Federal Trade Commission; readers elsewhere should use their national consumer-protection agency.
- Contact Nintendo Support for account or purchase assistance.
- Report the listing or advertisement to the marketplace, social network or ad platform where it appeared.
- For counterfeit products or misuse of Nintendo trademarks, use Nintendo’s infringement-reporting channels.
What is confirmed—and what is not
| Confirmed by Nintendo | Not disclosed in the 2022 announcement |
|---|---|
| Fake sites copied Nintendo branding and logo | Specific fake domains |
| Sites claimed to sell discounted Nintendo products, including Switch | Number of victims or total losses |
| Customers could face fraud and improper collection of personal information | Malware infections, arrests or prosecutions |
| Current support guidance warns about unusually cheap products and counterfeit risks | Any breach of Nintendo’s own systems |
The Bottom Line
The warning is genuine but dates to January 14, 2022. Treat an unexpectedly cheap Switch offer as a reason to verify the seller—not as proof of a bargain: begin from a known Nintendo or reputable retailer address, keep payment protected, and contact your bank or payment provider immediately if you already shared details or paid.
