The most dependable PS4 speed improvement is a wired Ethernet connection. If Wi‑Fi is unavoidable, reduce interference and competing traffic before changing DNS or MTU. First run the PS4 connection test so you can tell whether the problem is wireless coverage, your home network, the ISP, PlayStation Network, or multiplayer latency rather than raw download bandwidth.
1. Test the PS4 connection before changing anything
On the console, open Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. Record:
- Obtain IP Address
- Internet Connection
- PlayStation Network Sign-In
- NAT Type
- Connection Speed (Download)
- Connection Speed (Upload)
Sony says the download and upload figures are estimates, not guaranteed measurements of your internet plan. The same test also reports PSN sign-in and NAT status: Sony’s PS4 connection-test guide.
Run the test at roughly the same time before and after each change. Check another device on the same network and, if possible, a wired device. Router or ISP tests will not match the PS4 exactly, so treat one result as a snapshot rather than proof of a permanent line speed.

Know which number affects which problem
- Download speed: game, patch, and media download time.
- Upload speed: broadcasting, voice chat, and data sent from the console.
- Latency (ping): delay to the game server; usually more important than download speed for responsive multiplayer.
- Jitter: variation in latency that makes gameplay inconsistent.
- Packet loss: missing data that causes rubber-banding, voice problems, or disconnects.
- NAT type: how readily the PS4 can communicate with other players and services.
2. Use Ethernet first
Connect a normal Ethernet cable from the router or gateway directly to the PS4’s LAN port. Then select Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Use a LAN Cable > Easy, and run Test Internet Connection. Sony’s setup instructions are at PlayStation connectivity support.
Ethernet removes Wi‑Fi interference and usually makes latency and throughput more consistent, particularly when the console is behind walls or floors. Use a reputable Cat5e or Cat6 cable with undamaged RJ45 connectors and enough length to avoid tension. Cat7 or Cat8 is not required for a normal PS4 connection.
A cable cannot exceed the speed available from your ISP, router, PS4 hardware, or PlayStation’s download servers. Replacing a cable that already negotiates a stable link will not create extra bandwidth, and Ethernet will not bypass a congested PSN server.

3. Improve PS4 Wi‑Fi when cabling is impractical
Change placement before buying hardware
- Keep the PS4 in an open area, not inside a cabinet.
- Reduce walls and floors between console and router.
- Place the router high and unobstructed.
- Keep it away from large appliances, metal objects, and dense electronics.
A stronger signal is not automatically faster or lower-latency. If the router offers separate network names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, test both. Nearby consoles often benefit from 5 GHz’s capacity and typically lower congestion; 2.4 GHz may work better through several walls. Keep the band that produces the better repeatable result in your home.

Stop competing traffic
Pause video streaming, cloud backups, PC and phone downloads, other console updates, security-camera uploads, torrents, and simultaneous game streams while testing. Router QoS or device-priority features can manage congestion, but they cannot increase the total bandwidth supplied by the ISP.
4. Restart and update the network equipment
- Pause active PS4 downloads and close applications.
- Turn the PS4 off completely instead of leaving it in Rest Mode.
- Unplug the modem or gateway and router (if separate).
- Wait about 30–60 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem or gateway and wait until it is online.
- Reconnect the router, restart the PS4, and repeat the connection test.
Check the router’s administration page or ISP app for firmware updates. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends current router firmware when resolving PS4 network errors: Sony error support.

5. Try a custom DNS server only as a diagnostic
DNS translates service names into IP addresses. A different resolver can help when the ISP’s DNS is failing, sign-in or address lookups are unreliable, or connection setup is unusually slow. It does not add broadband capacity and is not a guaranteed game-download accelerator.
Cloudflare DNS on PS4
- Open Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Choose Use Wi‑Fi or Use a LAN Cable.
- Select Custom.
- Set IP Address Settings to Automatic.
- Set DHCP Host Name to Do Not Specify.
- Set DNS Settings to Manual.
- Enter primary
1.1.1.1and secondary1.0.0.1. - Set MTU Settings to Automatic.
- Set Proxy Server to Do Not Use, then test.
These values follow Cloudflare’s PS4 instructions. Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) is another test option, but no provider is universally fastest; results vary by ISP, location, time, and network path. If there is no measurable improvement, set DNS back to Automatic.
6. Leave MTU on Automatic
Random MTU values such as 1472, 1450, or 1480 are not universal performance settings. MTU depends on the path between your network and the destination. Keep MTU Settings > Automatic unless your ISP or a specific diagnostic procedure supplies a verified value. If a custom value causes failures, revert it to Automatic. Cloudflare’s current setup also specifies Automatic.

7. Fix NAT Type 3 separately from speed
Sony describes Type 1 as directly connected to the internet, Type 2 as connected through a router, and Type 3 as more restricted and potentially difficult for communication with other systems. For most homes, Type 2 is the practical target; it does not mean the connection is fast. See Sony’s NAT explanation.
- Restart the modem, router, and PS4.
- Enable UPnP if the router supports it and you understand the security trade-off.
- Check that the PS4 keeps a stable local IP address.
- Consult the game’s publisher for its required ports.
- Use targeted port forwarding only when necessary.
- Ask the ISP about carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) or double NAT if the problem persists.
Do not put the PS4 in a DMZ as a default speed fix. DMZ adds no bandwidth and can expose the console more broadly. Rockstar’s PS4 connection guidance treats wired links, NAT, ports, firmware, DNS, and speed as separate issues.
8. Deal with slow game downloads
A fast broadband test does not guarantee a fast PSN download. PlayStation or publisher server load, simultaneous installation, local congestion, Wi‑Fi interference, Rest Mode behavior, and the PS4’s storage workload can all limit the displayed rate.

- Pause and resume the download.
- Close running applications.
- Download one title or update at a time.
- Use Ethernet where possible.
- Try a quieter period and restart the console if the transfer stalls.
- Check PlayStation service status before treating the issue as a local fault.
9. Know when the ISP is the bottleneck
Contact the ISP when every device is slow, wired devices also underperform, the connection drops repeatedly, latency worsens at peak times, the modem reports line errors, or the PS4 works normally on another internet connection. Ask the ISP to check line quality, modem signal levels, packet loss, neighborhood congestion, provisioned speed, equipment, and CGNAT or double-NAT conditions.
Do not upgrade the plan before checking coverage and cabling. A weak Wi‑Fi link or damaged Ethernet cable can make a high-speed plan look slow.
10. Should you buy a router, extender, or mesh system?
Buy hardware only after testing. Consider a router or access point when Ethernet is fast but Wi‑Fi in the PS4’s location is poor, or when the existing router is unstable or overloaded. A faster ISP tier makes sense when a wired connection repeatedly reaches the plan’s limit while household use saturates it.

11. Troubleshooting by symptom

12. Revert custom settings and recover Wi‑Fi
If Custom setup causes problems, open Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection, choose the relevant Wi‑Fi or LAN connection, select Easy, save it, and run Test Internet Connection. For a DNS-only rollback, set DNS to Automatic; keep MTU Automatic and proxy Do Not Use unless verified support instructions require otherwise.
If the PS4 cannot see Wi‑Fi, confirm the network appears on another device, restart the router, move the console closer, verify the password, check hidden-network settings and router channel compatibility, and use Ethernet temporarily. A successful wired connection confirms that the fault is wireless-specific. Sony’s wired and wireless setup paths are documented at PlayStation connectivity support.
