Standard Google Snake does not appear to include a documented, built-in dark-mode switch. To make the play area dark, use the independent Google Snake Mods website and select a dark visual theme from its in-game mod panel. Chrome’s own Dark appearance setting can darken the browser interface, but it may leave Snake’s game canvas unchanged.
The quickest way to get a dark Snake board
- Open https://googlesnakemods.com/.
- Select Play.
- Wait for the modded game to load, then find the mod panel in the lower-right corner.
- Choose the available visual or theme option that gives you the dark appearance you want. Theme names and choices can change as the site is updated.
- Reload or restart the game if the colors do not change immediately.
This route is the current beginner-friendly approach described by the Google Snake Mod Loader project. The site says it supports running mods through its website, including on mobile and with older game versions, although results can vary by browser and device.
Why Chrome Dark mode may not darken Snake
Chrome’s setting controls the browser’s appearance, not necessarily the colors rendered inside a game. To enable it, open a new tab and use Customize Chrome → Appearance → Dark. You can also choose Device to follow your operating system’s theme. Google documents these controls at Chrome Help.
That setting can affect Chrome’s toolbar, New Tab page, settings and other supported pages. It does not guarantee that the Snake board or sprites will be recolored. A dark Google Search page, a dark Chrome theme and a dark Snake game are separate things.

Advanced option: use the mod-loader userscript
The website is normally easier. A userscript workflow is useful if you specifically need to run mods on a supported Google Snake page or want a repeatable setup.
- Install a compatible userscript manager. The loader documentation recommends Tampermonkey for the documented route; it notes that Greasemonkey will not work for that setup.
- Install the current Google Snake mod-loader userscript from the project’s documentation at GitHub.
- Open the Google Snake page where you want to play and confirm that the userscript is enabled for that page.
- Start Snake and use the mod panel to select a visual theme.
Do not assume one loader works on every copy of Snake. The documentation distinguishes the standalone FBX page (https://www.google.com/fbx?fbx=snake_arcade), search-result versions and an international version intended for Google search pages. Browser differences among Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge and Opera can also affect compatibility.

Why old bookmarklet tutorials fail
Older guides often tell you to create a bookmark containing JavaScript and click it while Snake is open. The original GoogleSnakeDarkMode project is archived and marked deprecated. The More Menu project says its bookmark no longer works, and Google Snake Mods’ history page explains that bookmarklets stopped working after technical changes in February 2023.
Use the current website or the documented loader instead of copying an unverified bookmarklet from a random “game hack” page.

Fixes when the dark theme does not appear
- Start from the right entry point: open the mod site and select Play, rather than launching an ordinary Snake result first.
- Refresh the game: reload the page and reopen the mod panel.
- Check the page version: if one route fails, try the standalone FBX page or a search-result version as appropriate for your loader.
- Check permissions: a userscript manager must be enabled on the Google page you are using.
- Remove conflicts: temporarily disable other userscripts or extensions that alter Google pages, then test again.
- Try another supported browser: browser implementations and restrictions differ, particularly on phones.
- Clean up stale tools: remove an old extension or userscript you no longer trust before installing a current one from the project’s public documentation.
Mobile use and privacy
The mod site states that it can run Snake mods on mobile, but mobile browser restrictions, touch controls and device-specific behavior can affect whether the site or a particular theme works. If the panel is missing, try the site’s own Play entry point in another mobile browser or use a desktop browser.
Google Snake Mods is an independent project and states that it is not associated with Google. Review permissions before installing any extension or userscript, avoid arbitrary JavaScript copied from untrusted pages, and remove the tool if you no longer need it. Chrome Web Store listings that use “official” wording are third-party Snake implementations, not evidence of Google endorsement: Snake and Google Snake Game.

What “dark mode” means here
- Chrome dark appearance: a darker browser interface.
- Google Search dark appearance: a darker search page.
- Snake dark theme: a mod that changes the game board, objects or other visual styles.
For the actual play area, choose a visual theme through the modded game rather than relying on Chrome’s global appearance setting.
The Bottom Line
There is no dependable first-party dark-mode control documented for standard Google Snake. For a dark board, use Google Snake Mods and its current in-game theme panel; treat Chrome Dark mode as a browser-interface setting, and treat bookmarklet tutorials as outdated.
