Apple’s Emoji Game is a daily Apple News+ puzzle in which you complete three short phrases by dragging emoji into blanks. It resembles Wordle only in its daily, shareable format: Apple’s instructions do not describe the game as a Wordle rival, and its mechanics are different.

What Apple’s Emoji Game is

Apple announced Emoji Game on July 17, 2025, as part of Apple News+ Puzzles. Each daily puzzle contains three phrases. You choose emoji—including Genmoji where supported—and place them in the missing spaces to complete the phrases.

An emoji may represent a word directly, suggest a related idea, or work with other emoji as a combination. The goal is to solve all three phrases in as few moves as possible.

How a puzzle works

  1. Open the puzzle: In the News app, find Emoji Game in Apple News+ Puzzles. Apple’s June 2025 services description placed the puzzle in the Following tab; current navigation can vary by app version.
  2. Interpret the phrase: Read the words around each blank and consider literal, associative and multi-emoji meanings.
  3. Drag emoji into the blanks: Selected emoji can be moved into the phrase to test an answer.
  4. Use clues carefully: Expanding a clue counts as a move, just like trying an answer.
  5. Finish or reveal: Apple Support says answers can be revealed. A puzzle with revealed answers is excluded from scoreboard statistics and streaks.

Emoji Game versus Wordle

The comparison is about the daily-puzzle habit, not identical gameplay. Wordle asks for a word and returns letter-position feedback. Emoji Game asks you to interpret several short phrases and measures the number of moves used.

Feature Apple Emoji Game Wordle-style format
Core task Complete three phrases with emoji Guess a hidden word using letter feedback
Input Drag emoji, including Genmoji where available Enter letter guesses
Performance measure Fewest moves; clue expansions and attempted answers count Usually guesses or attempts, depending on the game
Social features Game Center leaderboards and sharing through Messages, Mail, social media or other platforms Varies by implementation

Apple’s launch and support materials explain the format but do not say Apple created Emoji Game to compete with Wordle. “Battles Wordle” is therefore a framing comparison, not an Apple-stated strategy.

Scores, streaks and sharing

Results can be tracked through Game Center leaderboards and shared through Messages, Mail, social media or other platforms. Apple’s service description also mentions statistics, streaks and competition through Game Center. Revealing answers removes that puzzle from scoreboard statistics and streaks.

Who can play

At launch, Apple described English-language access for Apple News+ subscribers in the United States and Canada, including English-speaking users in Canada. The game is a subscription feature rather than a standalone purchase. Apple said subscribers would also be able to access it through Apple Games in the fall, but that was a launch-time plan, not confirmation of its current distribution.

Because Apple can change regions, device support and navigation, check the current Apple News and Apple Support availability pages before relying on a specific country, operating-system version or app path.

What Apple says about the design

Lauren Kern, editor-in-chief of Apple News, called Emoji Game “the perfect addition to the Apple News+ suite of word and number puzzles, turning the emoji we use every day into a brainteaser that’s approachable and fun.” The design extends Apple’s existing Crossword, Mini-Crossword, Quartiles and Sudoku lineup with a visual phrase-solving mechanic.

Is Emoji Game worth seeking out?

It makes the most sense for people who already subscribe to Apple News+ and want a short daily puzzle that rewards interpretation rather than vocabulary and letter-position deduction. It is not a required accessory or separate game purchase: access depends on an eligible Apple News+ subscription and Apple’s supported region and software.
