Yes, but only in a qualified sense. Google Play Games on PC lets you remap keyboard keys to virtual buttons and virtual joysticks in supported Android games. Google added the core feature in January 2025 and added an Aim and shoot control in January 2026. That can replace many touchscreen actions, but it does not make every Android game keyboard-only: some titles still need a mouse, lack compatible controls, or are not available through Google Play Games on PC.
What Google actually changed
Google Play Games on PC is an official Windows client for a selected catalog of mobile games, not an unrestricted Android emulator. Availability depends on your country, Google account, PC eligibility and the individual game’s support status. Google describes the service at its Play Games on PC overview.
- January 2025: Google added keyboard mapping for supported games, including virtual buttons and virtual joysticks. Control schemes can be exported and imported. See Google’s release notes at support.google.com/googleplay/answer/13585779?hl=en.
- January 2026: The same control collection gained an Aim and shoot option, useful for games such as first-person shooters.
- June 2026: Google added a mouse-wheel Zoom control for supported games and Windows High Contrast Mode. Zoom is a mouse feature, not keyboard-only play.
The accurate description is “keyboard remapping for supported games,” rather than native keyboard support for the entire Android catalog.
How to set up keyboard controls
- Install or update Google Play Games on PC from the official client page: play.google.com/googleplaygames.
- Launch a game that is available on your PC.
- In fullscreen, press Shift + Tab to open the overlay. In windowed mode, use the controls option in the game window’s sidebar.
- Select Remap controls.
- Choose a recognized virtual button, virtual joystick or another available control, then press the key you want to assign.
- Save the scheme and test it in a safe area before using it in a competitive match.
Google’s instructions for this workflow are documented at support.google.com/googleplay/answer/16263766?hl=en. There is no universal default layout. A practical starting point might be W/A/S/D for a virtual joystick, Space for jump, E for an interaction or ability, and number keys for abilities or inventory slots. Those are examples only; each game exposes different touch controls.

What “only a keyboard” can and cannot mean
The remapper translates a key press into an on-screen touch action. It can work very well for discrete actions such as movement, jumping, attacks, abilities and repeated taps. It is not a universal macro system or a guarantee that the mouse can be put away.
Common reasons a mouse is still needed
- Free-look or camera movement designed around pointer input.
- Menus, account prompts, text fields or external web pages that do not provide keyboard navigation.
- A game action exposed only as a mouse button, gesture or unsupported control.
- Games that require pinch, tilt, camera, location, gyroscope, accelerometer, Bluetooth or other mobile hardware.
Google’s Input SDK documentation says developers can disable remapping, mouse-button actions cannot be remapped through the SDK, and key-combination remapping is not supported. Read the constraints at developer.android.com/games/playgames/input-sdk-start. Google also says remapping is automatically disabled while you type in correctly implemented Android text fields.

How the control technology works
For games using Google’s Input SDK, the developer declares input actions. Play Games displays those actions in its overlay, you assign preferred keys, and the client translates those keys back into the action the game expects. Schemes persist across sessions on that PC, but Google says they are not shared between different PCs; reinstalling Play Games deletes locally stored control data.

Games with optimized PC controls
Some titles already provide a dedicated Game Controls settings page. Google’s Controls Editor is unavailable when a game has optimized PC controls, so use the game’s own settings instead.

Unoptimized games with remappable touch controls
These are the main beneficiaries. If the client recognizes virtual buttons or a virtual joystick, you can place keyboard assignments over those controls.
Games that are unavailable or unsuitable
A game being available on Android does not guarantee a PC listing. Developers may not release or approve a PC build, or the title may depend on unsupported hardware or permissions. Google’s compatibility guidance lists camera, location, gyroscope, accelerometer, touchscreen, Bluetooth, telephony and other unsupported capabilities at developer.android.com/games/playgames/pc-compatibility. Check the current Play Games client or store listing rather than relying on a fixed internet list.

PC requirements and performance checks
Use Google’s current requirements and compatibility checker rather than treating any static specification as a guarantee. Google warns that PCs below minimum requirements may receive only a limited experience; virtualization and current graphics drivers can affect installation and performance. Its GPU guidance includes families such as NVIDIA GeForce GTX 600-series and later, GeForce 16/20/30, RTX, Intel integrated graphics from 7th-generation Core processors, Intel Arc and several AMD Radeon HD, R7/R9, RX, Vega and Radeon VII lines. This is guidance, not a complete guarantee for every game; see Google’s GPU guidance. Supported games or hardware can also offer per-game FPS settings and resolutions up to 4K.

Native PC versions and Windows Subsystem for Android
If a publisher offers a real Windows version, it is usually the strongest choice for competitive play: keyboard-and-mouse behavior, graphics, anti-cheat and account handling are designed for PC. The trade-off is that the PC edition may be separate, may not share progress, or may not exist.
Windows Subsystem for Android is not a current mainstream alternative. Microsoft says Windows Subsystem for Android and the Amazon Appstore stopped being available in the Microsoft Store on March 5, 2025: Microsoft support.
Troubleshooting remapping problems
“Remap controls” is missing
- Update Google Play Games and restart both the client and game.
- In fullscreen, press Shift + Tab; in windowed mode, check the sidebar.
- Look for a separate Game Controls page if the title has optimized PC controls.
- Confirm the game is listed for PC and exposes virtual buttons or joysticks.
- Try another supported game to determine whether the issue is title-specific.
A key does nothing
- Reopen the overlay and verify that the key is attached to the correct on-screen control.
- Avoid keys captured by chat, menus or text entry.
- Check whether the action requires a mouse button or unsupported key combination.
- Reset the scheme and create a simpler mapping.
Accessibility considerations
Physical-key input can help players who cannot comfortably use touchscreen controls, prefer consistent keys for repeated actions, or need a larger display. It is not automatic full accessibility: success depends on whether every required action maps, menus can be reached without a mouse, and the game avoids timed gestures or analog-only input. Google’s June 2026 High Contrast Mode support improves the client interface, but it does not change a game’s own accessibility.
