Microsoft’s 2024 price table listed different changes by country, currency and membership type; for example, U.S. PC Game Pass rose from $9.99 to $11.99 for new members. The Standard plan launched on September 10, 2024, while Xbox’s current plan page uses Essential, Premium, Ultimate and PC Game Pass labels. A further change is scheduled for November 2026: included cloud gaming will receive monthly hour limits.
What changed, and when?
September 2024: Standard launched
Xbox Game Pass Standard launched on September 10, 2024. Xbox described it as combining Game Pass Core benefits—including online console multiplayer and member discounts—with access to hundreds of console games. The launch guide positioned Standard between Core and Ultimate. Xbox’s description of Ultimate highlighted day-one releases, cloud gaming and EA Play as higher-tier benefits.

2024 prices were market-specific
Microsoft’s official country-and-currency table did not establish one global dollar price. It showed separate current and new-member prices for Ultimate, annual Core and PC Game Pass, with changes differing by market. In the United States, PC Game Pass moved from $9.99 to $11.99 per month for new members. That example does not determine the price in another country or the treatment of an existing subscriber.
2025–2026: the labels and cloud rules moved again
Xbox’s current plan page uses Essential, Premium, Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Premium is the closest current middle-tier description to the role Standard filled in 2024, but Microsoft has not established that every market changed the name on the same date. Check the plan names and prices shown for your own account and country.

Current Game Pass plans compared
The table reflects Xbox’s current descriptions and the December 2025 cloud guide. Game counts, features and availability can change by region, plan, platform and time.
| Plan | Catalog and launch access | Console multiplayer and perks | Cloud gaming | EA Play |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | 50+ games; day-one access not stated on the current plan description | Online console multiplayer and member benefits | Included, according to Xbox’s December 2025 guide | Not stated on the current plan description |
| Premium | 200+ games; Xbox-published games join within one year of launch | Plan benefits are included; the current page does not separately quantify them | Included, according to the December 2025 guide | Not stated on the current plan description |
| Ultimate | 500+ games on the current page and day-one releases; Xbox’s December 2025 guide listed 400+ games | Online console multiplayer and additional benefits | Included, according to the December 2025 guide | Included in Xbox’s December 2025 guide |
| PC Game Pass | 300+ PC games and day-one titles | Designed for PC rather than console multiplayer | Not listed as included in the December 2025 cloud guide | Included on the current plan description |
The differing Ultimate counts are not necessarily a contradiction: Xbox says catalogs change, and the two figures come from different Xbox pages and dates. The current page’s 500+ figure covers the plan’s current offering across supported devices, while the December 2025 guide said 400+ at that time.
What “Standard” means now
Standard is the name readers encountered in the 2024 restructuring, not a guaranteed current label in every market. Its defining proposition was straightforward: Core’s online-console benefits plus a substantial console catalog, at a position below Ultimate. If your account now shows Premium, compare Premium’s catalog size and launch timing with what you wanted from Standard rather than assuming the two names are legally identical everywhere.

For a historical comparison, Standard’s launch materials emphasized hundreds of console games and Core benefits. Ultimate’s materials emphasized day-one games, cloud gaming and EA Play. Those descriptions explain the intended ladder; they do not guarantee that a particular title remains available today.

If you are joining now
Use the price displayed after selecting your country, currency and plan. The 2024 changes were quoted for new members in Microsoft’s table, so the U.S. PC Game Pass example of $11.99 applies specifically to new-member pricing.
If you already subscribe
There is no single worldwide answer in the published figures. Your market, plan, billing status and any local transition rules determine what appears on your account. Xbox Game Pass uses recurring billing by default, so check the renewal amount and date in your Microsoft account rather than relying on an old receipt.

Microsoft’s terms say recurring charges may increase with at least 30 days’ notice. A notice does not by itself identify the amount or whether a particular plan is being renamed, so read the message tied to your account and region.
Cloud gaming: availability and the November 2026 cap
What is included today
Xbox’s December 2025 cloud guide said cloud gaming was out of beta and available with Essential, Premium and Ultimate. It reported availability in 29 countries and said cloud gaming hours had increased 45% year over year. Availability, supported games and performance still depend on country, device, plan and network conditions.

|---|---|
| Essential | 5 hours |
| Premium | 10 hours |
| Ultimate | 15 hours |
Xbox said eligible subscribers today had no monthly limits and expected the change to affect 4% of subscribers. Additional hours will be sold through the Xbox Store, but Xbox had not announced their price or all market details as of September 3, 2026. Xbox editor-in-chief Joe Skrebels described the limits as “a meaningful change” for players who spend substantial time gaming through the cloud.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a plan
Compare the plans on five questions: whether you need day-one releases, which devices you use, how much catalog rotation matters, how often you stream, and whether console multiplayer or perks matter.
Choose Essential when online console play is the priority
Essential is the logical starting point for a console player who mainly needs online multiplayer and a smaller included catalog. Its 5-hour cloud allowance from November 2026 matters if you also stream games.
Best Value
- XBOX GIFT CARD: Buy full digital game downloads, game add-ons, in-game currency, memberships, devices, apps, movies, TV shows, and more.
- DIGITAL GAMES: Choose from hundreds of games, from AAA to indie options. Start playing the moment your most anticipated game is available when you pre-order and pre-download it.
- GAME AD-ONS: Extend the experience of your favorite games with add-ons and in-game currency.
- MOVIES & TV SHOWS: Rent or buy new and popular movies and TV shows from a massive library.
- PERFECT GIFT: Great as a gift for a friend or yourself. Xbox Gift Cards are easy to use, never expire, and give the freedom to pick the gift they want. Enjoy more ways to play without a credit card attached to your Microsoft account.
Choose Premium for the Standard-style middle ground
Premium fits players seeking a larger console catalog than Essential without paying for the broadest tier. Its current description lists 200+ games and Xbox-published games arriving within one year of launch. From November 2026, included cloud gaming is limited to 10 hours per month.
Choose Ultimate for day-one and broad device coverage
Ultimate is aimed at players who value day-one releases, the largest current catalog description, console multiplayer and the extra benefits listed by Xbox, including EA Play in the December 2025 guide. Its included cloud allowance will be 15 hours per month from November 2026.
Choose PC Game Pass for a PC-first library
PC Game Pass lists 300+ PC games, day-one titles and EA Play. It is the clearer fit when your gaming is on Windows PC and you do not need a console plan. The December 2025 cloud guide did not list PC Game Pass among the plans with included cloud gaming.
What happens when a game leaves?
Game Pass access lasts only while your subscription is active and while the game remains in the library. Microsoft says availability varies by region, plan and platform. A game’s inclusion is therefore not a permanent purchase license; buy it separately if you want continued access after it leaves or after your subscription ends.

Cloud setup requirements
- Use a compatible gamepad; Xbox’s cloud setup guide specifically names official Xbox controllers as supported.
- Plan for at least 20 Mbps for stable streaming, recognizing that actual results depend on latency, Wi-Fi quality and network congestion.
- Confirm that cloud gaming is offered in your country and on your chosen device before selecting a plan for streaming.
The practical verdict
Game Pass did go up in price, but the increase must be read by market and membership status rather than as one universal rate. Standard was the 2024 middle tier built around Core benefits and a large console catalog; Premium is the closest current equivalent on Xbox’s plan page, subject to local naming. Essential suits multiplayer-focused console players, Premium suits the middle tier, Ultimate suits day-one and broad-service users, and PC Game Pass suits PC players. If cloud gaming is central to your decision, account for the November 2026 monthly limits before committing.
