The simplest way to add Xbox One game space is a USB 3.0 external hard drive (HDD) or solid-state drive (SSD). Connect it to the console, choose the option to format it for Games and Apps, and then select it as the install location. Formatting permanently erases the drive, so copy off anything you need first.
What you need
- An Xbox One, Xbox One S, or Xbox One X.
- A USB 3.0 external HDD or SSD.
- A capacity that comfortably exceeds your expected game library.
- The drive’s appropriate USB cable and any required power adapter.
Xbox Wire’s 2014 announcement described support for moving and copying games, apps, and add-ons and said an Xbox One system could support up to two external hard drives at once. That announcement specified a 256 GB-or-larger external drive. Seagate’s published guidance is inconsistent: one guide states a 128 GB minimum, while another support article states 256 GB. Because those requirements come from different Seagate pages and the Xbox Wire statement is historical, do not buy a drive right at the disputed lower threshold. Let the Xbox’s current setup prompt decide whether the drive qualifies, and choose substantially more capacity when practical.
Format the drive for games
Xbox One requires a particular USB format to play and save games on an external drive. Seagate describes this requirement directly: “The Xbox One requires a specific format on the USB drive in order to play & save games on the drive.”
- Back up files on the external drive. The console’s game-storage format deletes its existing contents.
- Connect the drive to a USB port on the Xbox One.
- When the console asks how to use it, choose Format for Games and Apps (wording can vary with console software).
- If no prompt appears, open Settings > System > Manage Storage and start the format from there. Menu labels may differ slightly by software version.
- Confirm the warning, wait for formatting to finish, and choose the external drive when selecting where games and apps should be stored.
After setup, Seagate says Xbox One games can run directly from the external drive. You can also move or copy installed games, apps, and add-ons between the internal drive and the external one.

Choose the right external drive
| Decision | What to check | What the available evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | Buy for the number and size of games you intend to keep installed, not merely the minimum. | Published minimums conflict: Seagate lists 128 GB on one guide and 256 GB on another; Xbox Wire listed 256 GB or larger in 2014. |
| Interface | Confirm USB 3.0 compatibility and that the supplied connector fits the console. | Xbox Wire and Seagate guidance identify USB 3.0. |
| HDD or SSD | Compare capacity, price, portability, warranty, and your preferred form factor. | Both are valid USB storage categories. The available sources do not provide controlled Xbox One speed or value comparisons. |
| Power | Check whether the drive is bus-powered or needs its own power adapter. | Requirements depend on the specific product; verify them before purchase. |
| Use | Decide whether the drive will be dedicated to games or retained for other files. | A drive formatted for Games and Apps is not the same as a drive kept for media files. |
A portable bus-powered drive can reduce cable clutter, while a larger desktop model may have different power and placement requirements. No specific model or current retailer listing has been independently verified here, so check a candidate’s stated capacity, USB interface, cable, power requirements, and warranty before buying.
Manage games after expansion
Set the external drive as the install location
Once the drive is formatted, use the console’s storage-management controls to select it when installing or moving games. Keep the internal drive available for the titles you play most often, or use the external drive as the primary location if its capacity better fits your library.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

Move rather than redownload
Use Manage game and add-ons (or the equivalent storage command shown by your software version) to move or copy an installed title between drives. This preserves the local installation instead of requiring a fresh download.
Expect the drive to be console-formatted
Once dedicated to Games and Apps, the drive’s Xbox format takes priority. Before reusing it with a computer or for media, copy off anything needed and reformat it for that other purpose; doing so removes the Xbox game data.

Xbox One storage is not the Series X|S expansion card
The Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card is a separate product for Microsoft’s newer consoles. Xbox describes that card as adding storage while maintaining internal-SSD performance. It is not the Xbox One’s expansion method. For Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X, follow the USB 3.0 external-drive process above rather than buying a Series X|S card.
If the Xbox does not accept the drive
- Confirm the drive is connected directly to the console and that its cable and port are secure.
- Check the drive’s stated interface; the documented requirement is USB 3.0.
- Check its capacity against the console’s current prompt. The published 128 GB and 256 GB thresholds conflict, so a drive close to either figure may not be accepted.
- Try another USB port or cable if the console does not detect the drive.
- Do not accept the Games and Apps format prompt until all files on the drive are backed up.
Bottom line
For an Xbox One, buy a suitably large USB 3.0 external HDD or SSD, connect it, and format it through Games and Apps. Back up first because formatting erases the drive. Treat 256 GB as the safer practical floor given the conflicting published requirements, verify the console’s current prompt, and keep Xbox One USB storage separate from the Xbox Series X|S expansion card.
