No confirmed evidence shows that 89 million Steam accounts were compromised. In its May 14, 2025 statement, Valve said the sample it examined was not a breach of Steam systems. It described the material as older SMS messages containing time-limited one-time codes and destination phone numbers—not Steam passwords, payment information, or phone numbers linked to Steam accounts.
Was Steam hacked?
Valve’s exact assessment was: “We have examined the leak sample and have determined this was NOT a breach of Steam systems.” That conclusion applies to the sample Valve reviewed. The company did not identify the ultimate source of the messages and said its investigation was continuing.

What was reportedly exposed?
Valve said the examined sample consisted of older SMS security messages. The one-time codes were valid for only 15-minute time frames. Valve also said the messages did not connect the destination phone numbers to Steam accounts and contained no passwords, payment information, or other personal data.
Where did the “89 million” figure come from?
The 89-million number came from an allegation attributed to a seller known as Underdark in contemporaneous GameSpot and Windows Central reporting. It referred to records allegedly offered for sale. Valve did not confirm that 89 million records existed, that they represented Steam accounts, or that 89 million users were affected.

Accordingly, “89 million compromised Steam accounts” is not an established fact. The defensible description is an alleged 89-million-record figure connected to a reported SMS leak.
Could the old SMS codes let someone enter an account?
Valve said the codes in the reviewed messages were already old and valid for only 15 minutes. It said they could not be used to breach an account. The reviewed material also lacked the account association and password data that would be needed to turn those messages into a confirmed Steam-account takeover route.

Do you need to change your Steam password or phone number?
For this specific event, Valve said: “You do not need to change your passwords or phone numbers as a result of this event.” That advice is based on Valve’s review of the sample and does not replace ordinary security practices or action required after a separate, verified compromise.
What should Steam users do now?
- Treat unexpected messages cautiously. Valve advised users to be suspicious of unrequested account-security texts or codes. Do not share a code or follow a link simply because a message appears to mention Steam.
- Check your account security. Review Steam’s account-security controls and look for activity you do not recognize.
- Enable Steam Mobile Authenticator. Valve recommended its authenticator for users who have not already enabled it. It is a software feature; Valve did not say that buying a separate device or service was necessary.
SMS codes versus Steam Mobile Authenticator
| Method | What the report establishes | Valve’s guidance |
|---|---|---|
| SMS-delivered code | The reviewed messages were older one-time codes with 15-minute validity periods; Valve said they were not linked to Steam accounts in the sample. | Be cautious with unexpected security messages. |
| Steam Mobile Authenticator | Valve identifies it as an available account-security feature. | Enable it if you have not already done so. |
Is the source of the SMS leak known?
Not from Valve’s statement. Valve noted that SMS messages travel unencrypted in transit through multiple providers, but it did not name a confirmed carrier, vendor, or other source. Claims assigning responsibility to a particular provider therefore go beyond what has been established here.

What is confirmed—and what is not?
- Confirmed by Valve: Its reviewed leak sample was not a breach of Steam systems.
- Confirmed by Valve: The sample contained older SMS messages, short-lived one-time codes, and destination phone numbers.
- Confirmed by Valve: The sample did not include passwords, payment information, or phone numbers associated with Steam accounts.
- Not confirmed: That 89 million Steam accounts were compromised.
- Not established: The ultimate source of the messages or the full scope of any alleged record set.
Bottom line for Steam account holders
Valve’s published finding does not support calling this an 89-million-account Steam breach. The company said the reviewed material was an old SMS-code sample, that the codes had expired, and that users did not need to change passwords or phone numbers because of this event. Monitor unexpected security messages, review your account, and use Steam Mobile Authenticator as Valve recommends.
