Verdict: The Alienware Area-51m is still unusual among gaming laptops because it combines a socketed desktop CPU with a removable Dell Graphics Form Factor (DGFF) graphics module. That makes repairs and upgrades physically possible, but not necessarily practical: the GPU is proprietary, and compatible replacement modules may be difficult to source. Its benchmark performance can approach desktop-class systems in the tested configuration, while its size, power demands and age make it a specialist desktop-replacement rather than a universal recommendation.
What the Area-51m was built to be
The Area-51m is a large desktop-replacement laptop designed around desktop-class Intel processors rather than soldered mobile parts. Laptop Mag and Tom’s Hardware teardowns show a socketed CPU and a removable graphics board. This architecture was the machine’s defining feature: you can physically remove the processor and graphics module instead of treating the motherboard as a sealed unit.
Dell’s official specification listed four GPU choices: GeForce RTX 2060, RTX 2070, RTX 2080 and GTX 1660 Ti. The RTX 2080 configuration has 8 GB of GDDR6 memory and provides HDMI and Mini DisplayPort outputs.
Benchmark results: strong numbers from one specific SKU
Notebookcheck’s 2019 review dataset tested an Area-51m with a Core i9-9900K and GeForce RTX 2080. The results below describe that exact configuration, not every Area-51m sold.

| Test | Result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Cinebench R15 multi-core | 1,875 points | Notebookcheck 2019 dataset; Core i9-9900K/RTX 2080 sample |
| PCMark 10 | 7,006 points | Notebookcheck 2019 dataset; same sample |
| 3DMark Fire Strike Graphics, 1920×1080 | 27,080 points | Notebookcheck 2019 dataset; same sample |

Notebookcheck’s comparison tables place this tested model close to desktop-class systems in several workloads. That does not make every Area-51m equivalent to a desktop: an RTX 2060 or GTX 1660 Ti model will perform differently, and sustained results depend on cooling, firmware and power settings.
Configurations and launch-era pricing
Laptop Mag reviewed a high-end configuration and listed a lower-priced base model. These are launch-era review prices, not current 2026 market values.

| Configuration | Listed launch price | Key hardware | Display |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-end review unit | $5,099 | Overclockable 3.6 GHz Core i9-9900K, 64 GB RAM, two 1 TB PCIe M.2 SSDs in RAID 0, 1 TB plus 8 GB SSHD, RTX 2080 8 GB | 1920×1080, 144 Hz |
| Base model listed by Laptop Mag | $2,549 | Core i7-8700, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB plus 8 GB SSHD, RTX 2070 8 GB | 1080p, 60 Hz |
The large gap between these configurations matters when interpreting reviews. CPU, GPU, memory, storage and refresh rate all changed between the tested flagship and the listed base model, so a benchmark result from the i9/RTX 2080 system should not be used to estimate the entry model.
Can you upgrade the CPU and GPU?
CPU: physically socketed
Tom’s Hardware identified the processor as a desktop Core i9-9900K that can be removed like a conventional desktop CPU. The socket makes replacement or repair more straightforward than on a soldered laptop board. It does not guarantee that every desktop processor is supported: BIOS compatibility, power delivery, cooling capacity and the machine’s firmware still determine what will work.

GPU: removable, but proprietary
The graphics card is a Dell/Alienware DGFF module secured with screws and connected by cables. Tom’s Hardware describes it as a proprietary module made by Dell. Removal is therefore possible, but the board is not a standard desktop PCIe card that can be swapped for any retail GPU. Tom’s Hardware reported that replacement modules were not yet available when its teardown was published. Treat any upgrade plan as conditional on finding a compatible Dell module, not simply on the fact that the module comes out.
What the design actually improves
- Repair access: a failed socketed CPU or removable GPU is less constrained than a soldered component.
- Upgrade flexibility: compatible parts can extend the system’s useful life.
- Practical limitation: proprietary sourcing, firmware support and prices can erase the theoretical advantage.
Area-51m teardown: what you will encounter
The teardown is more involved than opening a typical thin gaming notebook. Laptop Mag and Tom’s Hardware show the process requiring removal of the rear I/O cover and a protective motherboard shell, followed by work around a large heatsink, power cables and numerous small screws.

- Power down and isolate the machine. Shut down fully, disconnect both external power connections and use an antistatic work surface.
- Remove the rear I/O cover. This exposes the fasteners and access path to the internal protective shell.
- Remove the protective shell or motherboard cover. Keep screws organized because several lengths and positions are involved.
- Expose the cooling assembly. Disconnect the relevant power or signal cables and remove the heatsink fasteners so the CPU socket and DGFF board can be reached.
- Remove the CPU or GPU as required. The CPU releases from its desktop socket. The GPU module must have its screws and cables removed before it can be lifted out.
- Clean and repaste before reassembly. Tom’s Hardware specifically advises applying fresh thermal paste to both the CPU and GPU when upgrading or rebuilding the computer.
- Reassemble in reverse order. Reconnect every cable, reinstall the heatsink evenly and verify that the rear I/O cover is secure before powering on.
Photographing cable routing and labeling screws during disassembly is sensible, but the exact fastener sequence can vary by configuration. A service manual or an experienced technician is preferable if you have not worked inside a high-power laptop before.

The Area-51m demonstrates an important distinction: a component can be removable without being readily replaceable. The socketed CPU lowers the mechanical barrier to repair, while the DGFF GPU still depends on a proprietary supply chain. Before buying one for an upgrade project, verify the exact module revision, firmware compatibility and whether a known-good replacement is actually available. Do not assume that a cheap desktop GPU or a module from another Alienware generation will fit.

Area-51m versus a desktop PC
| Comparison axis | Area-51m | Desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | The tested i9-9900K/RTX 2080 model landed near desktop-class comparison systems in several Notebookcheck tests. | Usually offers more freedom to select higher-power parts and larger cooling solutions. |
| CPU upgrades | Socketed desktop CPU; compatibility remains firmware- and cooling-dependent. | Standard desktop socket and a broader replacement market, subject to motherboard support. |
| GPU upgrades | Removable DGFF board, but proprietary and dependent on Dell-compatible modules. | Standard expansion cards with a much wider parts ecosystem. |
| Service work | Requires removal of covers, a shell, heatsink hardware and cable connections. | Generally easier component access and more room for tools and cooling. |
| Portability | All-in-one computer, but its desktop-replacement design brings substantial chassis and power-adapter burden. | Requires a separate display and peripherals and is not portable as a complete system. |
| Display | Configurations included 1080p 60 Hz and 1080p 144 Hz panels. | Monitor choice is independent and can be replaced without changing the computer. |
| Long-term cost | Potentially repairable, but proprietary GPU parts and maintenance supplies affect total cost. | Broader parts availability generally makes upgrades and repairs easier to price. |
The Area-51m makes the most sense when one computer must combine desktop-like performance with built-in mobility. A desktop remains the safer choice for frequent GPU upgrades, quiet cooling expansion or predictable part availability.
Thermal paste and reassembly priorities
Repasting is not an optional cosmetic step after disturbing the heatsink. Tom’s Hardware explicitly calls for fresh compound on both the CPU and GPU during an upgrade or reassembly. Use a quality laptop-appropriate thermal paste, remove the old material carefully, apply the new compound according to the paste maker’s instructions and tighten the heatsink evenly. Poor contact, missed cables or uneven pressure can produce higher temperatures or prevent a successful boot even when the replacement component is compatible.
Quick Recap
Who should consider an Area-51m now?
It is a good fit when
- You specifically want a repairable, desktop-replacement laptop from this generation.
- You value a socketed CPU and are comfortable servicing a large, complex chassis.
- You have confirmed the exact GPU or other replacement part before purchase.
- You are evaluating a known configuration rather than extrapolating from the flagship i9/RTX 2080 review unit.
Look elsewhere when
- You expect inexpensive, routine GPU upgrades using standard desktop cards.
- You need a thin, light system or have no tolerance for a heavy power setup.
- You require current-generation performance, warranty coverage or guaranteed parts supply.
- You are comparing it with a desktop solely on theoretical upgradeability; the proprietary DGFF ecosystem changes that calculation.
