It is not the story that Halloween retells: the connection is visual. John Carpenter based Myers’s mask on the rigid, featureless mask worn by Christiane, the disfigured daughter at the center of Franju’s gothic medical tragedy.
What Eyes Without a Face is about
Dr. Génessier is a celebrated surgeon whose daughter Christiane has survived a car accident with her face badly disfigured. Hidden away in the family’s isolated mansion and concealed behind a mask, she is believed by the outside world to be dead. Génessier’s assistant, Louise, abducts young women so the surgeon can remove their faces and attempt to graft them onto Christiane.
The setup turns respectable domestic life and medical authority into sources of dread. The mansion is remote, the roads around it stark, and the deception about Christiane’s fate helps Génessier keep his experiments hidden. The horror grows from the gap between the doctor’s public standing and what happens behind closed doors.
Why it is connected to Halloween
Christiane’s rigid, blank white mask is the documented design influence on Michael Myers’s mask. Its lack of expression makes her look almost statue-like, an unsettling presence that Carpenter translated into a different kind of horror icon. The relationship is a visual lineage, not a remake or shared story: Franju’s film is a French medical tragedy, while Halloween is an American suburban stalk-and-kill film.

How disturbing is the face-surgery scene?
The film’s most notorious sequence is a sustained face-removal operation. The camera stays with the procedure as a scalpel cuts into the victim’s face and the tissue is lifted away; the scene avoids musical distraction, making its clinical pacing part of the discomfort. The violence feels cold and deliberate rather than fast or sensational.
The Independent reported that seven people fainted at an Edinburgh Film Festival screening, and that the sequence alarmed audiences and censors. That is a report about one screening, not a general measure of how viewers react. Franju described the film’s approach as “a quieter mood than horror… more internal, more penetrating. It’s horror in homeopathic doses”.

The novel and the filmmakers
Eyes Without a Face adapts Jean Redon’s novel. Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac co-wrote the screenplay. Their literary work also connects the film to other suspense classics: novels by the pair supplied the basis for Henri-Georges Clouzot’s Les Diaboliques (also known as Diabolique) and Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo.
How it compares with Les Diaboliques
The British Film Institute pairs Franju’s film with Clouzot’s Les Diaboliques as works that helped renew France’s darker cinema through unforgiving stories and stark settings. They create unease in different ways:

| Aspect | Eyes Without a Face | Les Diaboliques |
|---|---|---|
| Source of horror | Medical experimentation and face grafts | Crime and suspense |
| Storytelling emphasis | Gothic unease built around a hidden daughter and her father’s scheme | Suspense and revelation |
| Setting | An isolated mansion and bleak roads on the outskirts of Paris | A stark, confined domestic setting |
| Bodily violence | An explicit, prolonged surgical sequence | Not characterized by the same face-removal procedure |
The contrast helps explain why Franju’s film can feel both restrained and shocking: its atmosphere is measured, but its central act of violence is shown directly.
