Steam Link usually fails at one of four points: Steam cannot find or authorize the host PC, the local network or firewall blocks the connection, the host cannot capture and encode video, or the client cannot decode it. Start with the symptom below; a black screen, lag, and a missing PC need different fixes.
Find the failure point first
Steam Link is the app or hardware used to stream a game; the underlying feature is Steam Remote Play. Steam lists clients for platforms including iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Android, Fire TV, Raspberry Pi, Windows, Linux, macOS, and Meta Quest. The exact settings available depend on the client and Steam version. Steam Remote Play
| What you see | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| The host PC is missing | Steam sign-in and Remote Play, network separation, guest Wi-Fi, or firewall |
| The host appears, but pairing fails | Stale pairing or authorization, Steam state, firewall, or network path |
| It connects, then drops | Network instability, firewall, encoding or decoding, or conflicting software |
| Black screen, with or without sound | Video capture, encoder, codec, HDR, GPU driver, or client decoder |
| It streams but stutters or feels slow | Network-time spikes, host performance, encoding load, or stream settings |
| Video works but the controller does not | Input streaming, controller connection, Steam Input, or the game’s layout |
| Only one game fails | That game’s launcher, display mode, overlays, capture behavior, or Remote Play configuration |
First establish whether the PC appears and whether the problem affects every game. Reinstalling Steam is unlikely to fix an isolated network, firewall, codec, or game-capture issue.
Do the basic host and network checks
For ordinary local discovery, the host and client should be on the same private home network. The host must be awake, running Steam, signed in, and have Remote Play enabled. Steam’s support guidance covers these prerequisites and warns that network isolation can prevent devices from communicating. Steam Link connection troubleshooting

- On the host, launch Steam and sign in to the intended account.
- Open Steam → Settings → Remote Play and enable Enable Remote Play. Older clients and support pages may call this In-Home Streaming.
- If it was already enabled, switch it off, apply the change, turn it back on, then restart Steam completely.
- Connect the client and host to the same home router. Avoid guest Wi-Fi, captive-portal networks, and school, office, or hotel networks for this test.
- Temporarily disconnect VPN software and check the router for settings named client isolation, AP isolation, wireless isolation, or device isolation.
- If the host is on Windows, set its home network profile to Private. Connect the host to the router by Ethernet if possible.
A matching beginning to the devices’ IP addresses can be a rough clue that they are on the same network, but it is not definitive: subnetting and other network configurations can change what the addresses look like.
If Steam Link cannot find or pair with the PC
Allow Steam through the firewall
A firewall can block discovery or the connection even when both devices use the same router. On Windows, allow Steam through the firewall on the appropriate network type. If necessary, briefly turn the firewall off only to test whether it is the cause; turn it back on immediately and create a proper Steam exception. Steam notes that a Steam or game update can make a previously working firewall rule ineffective. Steam’s host and firewall troubleshooting
Steam identifies these ports for Remote Play: UDP 27031 and 27036; TCP 27036 and 27037. For VR streaming it also identifies UDP 10400 and 10401. These are not instructions to forward ports to the internet: ordinary local streaming should be tested first with Steam allowed through the host firewall and both devices on a usable local network. Refresh pairing and restart the network
If the host appears but pairing loops or a code is rejected, restart Steam and the client, then remove and add the paired computer again if the client offers that option. To clear an intermittent network failure, exit Steam, power-cycle the router and any powerline adapters, wait about 30 seconds before reconnecting them, then restart the host and client. For original Steam Link hardware, Steam’s instructions say to unplug the unit and wait about three seconds before reconnecting it. Steam’s restart and streaming-settings guidance

Use the streaming performance overlay to distinguish a network problem from a host encoder or client decoder problem. Steam’s support instructions say to enable the overlay in the client’s advanced streaming settings. During a stream, press F6 on a keyboard or use the controller shortcut displayed by Steam Link; Start + Y is common on compatible controllers. Watch for network-time spikes that coincide with freezes. Steam performance overlay guidance
- Network-time spikes: investigate Wi-Fi interference, congestion, mesh roaming, powerline links, or competing traffic.
- Network timing is steady but host or encoding time is high: reduce game load or resolution and test hardware encoding.
- Host timing is steady but the client struggles: test a lower resolution, different codec setting, or another client.
- Video and timing are fine but controls fail: troubleshoot input separately.
Try the host on Ethernet first; wire the client too if practical. On Wi-Fi, compare 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz where available: 5 GHz may be less congested, but has shorter range and weaker wall penetration. Stop large downloads, cloud sync, video streaming, casting, and file transfers while testing; update router firmware and try a less congested channel if spikes persist. Powerline adapters vary with a home’s wiring and electrical interference, so test without them if possible. Steam recommends wired connections as the strongest baseline and warns that wireless and powerline links can be intermittent. Steam networking recommendations

If the stream is laggy or stutters
A broadband speed test does not measure the consistency of the local path between the host and client. Variable delay, interference, packet loss, host game performance, and encoding load can all cause a poor stream even when internet download speed is high.
- Check the performance overlay while the problem occurs and identify whether network timing or host processing spikes.
- Use Ethernet for the host, then test the client on Ethernet if feasible. If using Wi-Fi, test both bands and prioritize a strong, stable signal rather than choosing 5 GHz regardless of distance.
- Stop competing traffic and, where available, test router QoS or device prioritization.
- In Steam Link’s client settings, open Settings → Streaming → Advanced Client Options and change Bandwidth Limit from Automatic to a low value. Test, then raise it gradually until instability returns and step back to the last stable setting. Older interfaces may label this Advanced options → Bandwidth Limit. Steam bandwidth troubleshooting
- Lower stream resolution and test the game’s local frame rate on the host. If the game itself runs poorly, streaming cannot make it smooth.
A lower bandwidth limit or 720p test is diagnostic, not necessarily the best permanent quality setting. Raise settings only after the connection is stable.

- Restart Steam and the client device.
- Temporarily disable HDR on the host and client displays, and reduce the game and stream to 1280 × 720.
- Set client streaming quality to Fast if that option is available.
- Toggle hardware encoding on the host; toggle hardware decoding on the client if its app exposes that setting. Steam provides GPU-specific hardware-encoding controls and recommends experimenting because behavior depends on the hardware and setup. Steam hardware-encoding guidance
- If available, test with HEVC enabled and disabled. A codec that works on one host-client combination may fail on another.
- Update the GPU driver, or test reverting it if the problem began immediately after a driver change. Close overlays and capture tools, then test another game and another client.
- For original Steam Link hardware, remove attached USB devices and power-cycle the unit. Steam includes those checks in its black-screen troubleshooting. Steam black-screen troubleshooting
Hardware encoding often reduces CPU load, but a driver or encoder fault can make it the problem rather than the solution. A 720p SDR test removes some variables; it does not mean you must keep those settings. If a Mac is the host, check whether Steam has the screen-recording and system-audio permissions required by the macOS version in use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the host is slow or the stream has a low frame rate
Separate the game’s frame rate from the streaming overhead. Check how the game performs locally, then monitor CPU and GPU load while streaming. High rendering resolution, software encoding, overlays, and capture utilities can leave too little capacity for a smooth stream. Steam lists low game frame rate and slow host encoding among causes of low streaming frame rate. Steam low-frame-rate guidance
- Lower the game’s resolution and stream resolution; test 720p.
- Close overlays, screen recorders, and other GPU-intensive programs.
- Toggle hardware encoding and compare results rather than assuming one mode is always faster.
- Reset streaming settings to defaults if the client provides that option. Depending on the interface, it may be under Settings → Streaming → Advanced Options or Big Picture’s older In-Home Streaming → Advanced Client Options. Some reset controls may only appear in beta builds.
If the controller is not detected
If the picture works but input does not, confirm that streaming input is enabled in Steam Link’s Settings → Streaming → Advanced Options. Steam input-streaming instructions

- Reconnect the controller directly to the client over USB or Bluetooth, then test it locally on that device.
- Try USB instead of Bluetooth and temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth peripherals, including a headset.
- Test a keyboard or mouse, or a standard supported gamepad, to distinguish stream input from a controller-specific issue.
- Check Steam Input and the game’s controller layout. If only one title is affected, inspect that game’s settings rather than changing the whole stream.
Controller support varies by client platform and device; specialized DirectInput devices such as racing wheels or flight sticks are not universally supported through Steam Link. Steam Remote Play controller FAQ
If only one game fails
If the Steam interface or another game streams, the host, network, and client are at least partly working. Test a second game before changing system-wide settings. For the affected title, try disabling HDR, switching to borderless-windowed or windowed mode, lowering resolution, and closing overlays. Launch it from Big Picture and, for a non-Steam game, verify that it is added to Steam and started through its library entry.
Some games use launchers or anti-cheat systems that affect capture or input. Developers can configure Remote Play support and designate games for phone, tablet, or TV use; a game lacking a Remote Play designation is not automatically incapable of streaming, but its behavior may differ. Steamworks Remote Play documentation
Remote Play Together is a separate feature for inviting friends into supported local multiplayer games. It is not the same as streaming your game from a PC to your own Steam Link client.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs this the Steam Link app or the original hardware?
The original Steam Link box adds hardware checks that do not apply to a phone, TV, or desktop app: confirm its power, HDMI input and cable, attached USB devices, and restart behavior. If it powers on but has no video, test a different HDMI input or cable before changing network settings. The app instead depends on its platform’s app version, codec support, permissions, and Bluetooth or USB behavior. Apply device-specific steps only to the device you are using; Steam’s current Remote Play page lists the app across multiple client platforms. Steam Remote Play platforms
When to contact Steam Support
Escalate the issue if a wired host and client still fail across multiple client devices, pairing succeeds but every client has the same persistent decoding failure, or original hardware will not boot or output video after power and HDMI checks. Include the host and client platforms, Steam versions, whether the problem affects every game, and what the performance overlay shows. If the failure began after an update, report which component changed and test the other likely causes before treating the update as the confirmed cause.
