Microsoft removed the Windows 11 24H2 compatibility hold for Asphalt 8: Airborne on March 19, 2025. Eligible PCs with the game installed can now be offered the feature update through Windows Update, but the change does not guarantee that every PC will see it: hardware eligibility, organization policies and other compatibility holds still apply.
What Microsoft blocked—and what it did not
The restriction was a Windows Update safeguard hold, identified as 52796746. It temporarily stopped affected devices with Asphalt 8: Airborne installed from being offered Windows 11, version 24H2 through the normal update channel. Microsoft uses safeguard holds to delay a feature update when a known compatibility issue could affect a device; Microsoft explains how safeguard holds work and how to check for them.
This was not a ban on the game, a block on all Windows updates, or a statement that Windows itself would fail. Microsoft documented that the game could stop responding with an exception while being played or while the player tried to exit it; restarting the game was needed to recover. The published symptom was an unresponsive application, not a universal crash or confirmed save-data loss.
When the Asphalt 8 hold ended
Microsoft recorded the issue on September 30, 2024, and marked it resolved on March 19, 2025, at 10:04 a.m. Pacific Time. The company said the 24H2 offer could take up to 48 hours to reappear after removal of the hold, and that restarting the PC might help. The 48-hour estimate described the possible return of the offer at that time; it is not a promise that every device will be offered 24H2. The Asphalt-specific restriction is a resolved historical issue, not a new update announcement.
How to check for 24H2 safely
- Save your work, close Asphalt 8 and other open apps, and back up important files. If you are using a laptop, connect it to power.
- Open Start, then go to Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates. If Windows offers version 24H2, review the prompt and select Download and install.
- Allow the update to finish and restart when Windows asks.
- After installation, open Asphalt 8, try playing, then close the game normally and launch it again.
Before checking, you can update a Store-installed copy of the game: open Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates (or Check for updates, depending on the Store layout). Microsoft’s Store guidance describes checking for app and game updates. Updating the game is a sensible check, but the removal of the Windows hold does not establish that a particular game patch caused it.

If Windows Update still does not offer 24H2
Do not assume the Asphalt hold is still active. A device can be clear of that one restriction yet remain ineligible or held back for another reason. Microsoft’s safeguard-hold guidance notes that holds can be device-specific and that Windows Update may provide a customized explanation through a Learn more link.
- Another compatibility hold: Follow the explanation shown by Windows Update. A separate driver, application, firmware or hardware issue may affect the device.
- Eligibility or policy: The PC must meet Windows 11 requirements and be eligible for 24H2. A work- or school-managed device may also have feature updates delayed or controlled by its administrator.
- Pending servicing: Install available Windows updates, restart if requested, and check again.
- Device-specific updates: Check the PC manufacturer’s support resources for applicable drivers or firmware.
- Staged availability or update trouble: The offer may not appear immediately, or Windows Update may have a separate servicing problem.
Use Windows Update as the default route rather than forcing installation with the Installation Assistant or Media Creation Tool just because the Asphalt-specific hold has ended. Microsoft’s earlier warning against those tools applied while the game issue was unresolved; it is not a current Asphalt-specific prohibition. But bypassing a different hold can sidestep a compatibility protection whose reason still matters.

If Asphalt 8 still freezes after updating
- Check Microsoft Store for a game update, then restart Windows and test the game again.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Asphalt 8 → Advanced options, if those options are available for your installation.
- Try Repair first. If that does not help, consider Reset only after verifying that your progress is synchronized or backed up; Reset may remove local app data.
- If the problem persists, reinstall the game as a last resort. Store packaging and available recovery options can vary, so do not assume local progress will be preserved.
