No. Sony’s PS5 cloud-streaming beta for PlayStation Portal is no longer the service’s current status: Sony officially launched cloud streaming on November 5, 2025, and now lists it as a PlayStation Plus Premium benefit. The service continues to receive updates, but that is different from the whole feature remaining in beta.
How the beta became a full service
Sony introduced Cloud Streaming (Beta) for PlayStation Portal on November 19, 2024. Premium members could stream selected PS5 games from Sony’s servers without connecting to a PS5. The initial test drew from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and supported up to 1080p/60fps under suitable conditions. Sony’s beta announcement describes the original scope.
In April 2025, Sony added beta features including catalog sorting, gameplay captures, and a queue with estimated wait times when servers were full. Those details describe the test period, not proof that the service remains in beta. Sony announced the full launch for November 5, 2025, expanding Portal streaming to select digital PS5 games in users’ libraries as well as catalog titles. Sony said thousands of PS5 games supported streaming at launch; that is Sony’s figure, not an independently counted total. The launch announcement lists examples.
Sony’s current PlayStation Plus page presents PS5 cloud streaming as a Premium feature for compatible games on PS5 consoles and Portal. Sony continues to improve it: a March 2026 Portal update added a 1080p High Quality mode. Ongoing updates or tests of individual features do not make the overall consumer service a beta again.

Where cloud streaming works—and what it is not
Current Sony materials identify two destinations for select PS5 cloud-streaming games: a PS5 console and PlayStation Portal. A PS5 is not required to cloud-stream on Portal. By contrast, Portal’s Remote Play feature streams from the player’s own paired PS5, which must be available and connected. Remote Play does not require Premium; cloud streaming does. Sony distinguishes the services on its PlayStation account page.
Do not assume Sony offers this same PS5 cloud-streaming service through a phone, PC, Mac, browser, or smart TV. Those devices may be used with Remote Play in supported circumstances, but that is a different connection to your own console.
| Option | Where the game runs | PS5 required? | Premium required? | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 cloud streaming | Sony’s servers | No for Portal; the service is also available on PS5 | Yes | No download needed, but only compatible titles work and network quality matters |
| Portal Remote Play | Your paired PS5 | Yes | No | Uses your installed library, but the console must be available |
| Local PS5 play | Your PS5 | Yes | No cloud-streaming subscription requirement | Less dependent on network quality, but uses console storage |
What subscription and account do you need?
In the United States, Sony requires PlayStation Plus Premium for PS5 cloud streaming; Essential and Extra do not include this benefit. The US plan page displayed prices of $16.99 for one month, $43.99 for three months, and $134.99 for 12 months on August 18, 2026. Sony says subscriptions renew automatically until canceled; prices and offers can change. Check Sony’s current plan page before subscribing, and check the applicable PlayStation site for pricing and availability in your country.

There are two main sources: compatible games available through the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog or Classics Catalog, and select digital PS5 games you have purchased. Premium access to a catalog game lasts only while the subscription and catalog entitlement are active. A purchased digital game may be streamable only if Sony supports that specific title. Owning a PS5 game does not guarantee cloud access, and a physical disc is not the same as a digital entitlement.
Sony’s launch examples included Astro Bot, Borderlands 4, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Fortnite, Ghost of Yōtei, Grand Theft Auto V, and Resident Evil 4. Catalog examples included Cyberpunk 2077, God of War Ragnarök, Hogwarts Legacy, Sword of the Sea, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered. These are examples, not a promise of ongoing availability: support can vary by country, account, game edition, publisher rights, and catalog status.

To check a title before buying or subscribing, search the Portal interface or consult the live US PlayStation Store category for PS5 games for cloud streaming. It is a changing listing, not a permanent universal catalogue. Sony also notes that catalog availability varies over time, by plan, and by region on its PS Plus page.
How to start streaming on Portal or PS5
On PlayStation Portal
- Sign in to Portal with the PlayStation Network account that has an active Premium subscription.
- Install the latest Portal system software and connect to broadband Wi-Fi.
- Open the Cloud Streaming area from the Portal home screen, select a compatible game, then choose Stream.
- If the game is not included with your account, follow the displayed purchase or entitlement instructions. A compatible digital purchase does not automatically make every title streamable.
To change Portal’s stream-quality setting, open Quick Menu > Max Resolution > 1080p High Quality. Sony says the session must be restarted for the change to take effect. The March 2026 update describes High Quality as a higher-bitrate option than 1080p Standard; actual results still depend on network conditions. Sony’s update notes also cover other interface refinements.

On PS5
With Premium, select compatible games can be streamed directly to a PS5 without downloading them. Look for the streaming option on a supported game in the console interface. This saves a download, but it is not local play and still depends on the subscription, title compatibility, and network.

Internet, image quality and travel
Sony’s March 2026 guidance gives 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband Wi-Fi speed and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. Those figures are not a promise of a particular resolution or responsiveness: network stability and congestion also affect a session. The more detailed 7 Mbps minimum for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p came from Sony’s November 2024 beta guidance, so treat them as historical beta-era targets rather than the current public requirement.
Portal cloud streaming can work away from home, including on hotel, café, or friends’ Wi-Fi, if the connection is adequate. Public networks may require a browser sign-in page, block gaming traffic, or slow down under load. Latency can make action games feel less responsive even when a speed test shows sufficient bandwidth; Sony does not provide a universal latency guarantee. A stable, uncongested 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection is generally preferable to a weak or busy one.
The Portal supports 1080p Standard and 1080p High Quality modes, but “1080p” is not a guarantee of a flawless, fixed-quality stream in every condition. During the beta Sony documented selected DualSense features, including haptics and adaptive triggers; feature support can depend on the game and service. Consult the current game and device interface for the options available in a particular session.

What to check if streaming is unavailable or unstable
- Confirm the account has Premium, rather than Essential or Extra, and is eligible to use the feature.
- Check that the specific title is currently cloud-streamable for your region and account; catalog games can leave the service.
- Update Portal system software. If an entitlement appears missing, sign out and back in.
- Try a different Wi-Fi network if the session stalls or disconnects. Speed, upload capacity, latency, interference, routing, and server load can all contribute; download speed alone does not identify the cause.
- During a Portal session, open Quick Menu > Troubleshoot > Show Network Status to inspect the connection.
- For a purchased title, verify that it is a compatible digital PS5 edition on the same account. A disc copy or a purchase on another account may not grant the needed entitlement.
Sony added queueing when servers were full during the 2025 beta. That is a documented historical feature, not evidence that queues are a routine current limitation.
Who is cloud streaming a good fit for?
- Consider it if you want to use Portal without access to a PS5, avoid downloads, share a household TV, or play while traveling on reliable Wi-Fi—and you value Premium’s other benefits as well.
- Think twice if your connection is unreliable, you mainly play latency-sensitive competitive games, or you expect every purchased PS5 title to work.
- Choose local play or Remote Play instead if you already have a PS5 and prioritize consistency, have enough storage, or only want to use your own console library without paying for Premium.
Cloud streaming remains subject to compatible-title availability, regional differences, network conditions, subscription entitlements, and Sony’s PlayStation terms governing licensed content and streaming.
