The HoYoPlay message “Failed to check for updates. Reconnect?” means the launcher could not reach or validate Genshin Impact’s update service. It does not, by itself, prove that the entire game is corrupted. On Windows, close HoYoPlay completely, restart the PC, open the launcher directly, run Repair Now, then test another network and check VPN, proxy, firewall, antivirus, storage and permissions. Reinstall only after those checks fail.
Quick fix checklist
- Exit HoYoPlay and end any remaining HoYoPlay, Genshin Impact or updater processes in Task Manager.
- Restart Windows.
- Open HoYoPlay from the Start menu or its installed location instead of an old desktop shortcut.
- Open Genshin Impact’s launcher menu and choose Repair Now (the exact control can vary by HoYoPlay version).
- Temporarily disable VPNs, proxies, network accelerators and network-level filtering.
- Restart the router, then try Ethernet, another Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot.
- Check antivirus quarantine, firewall permissions, free storage and whether the installation drive is writable.
- If repair still fails, use an official HoYoverse repair option, reinstall from an official source or contact support.
HoYoverse’s current guidance identifies unstable or restricted networks, blocked files, inadequate storage, corrupted downloads and outdated system components as common causes. It recommends restarting, changing networks, using Repair Now and reinstalling from an official source when repair does not work (download and update guidance; update-failure guidance).
What the error actually means
HoYoPlay must contact a patch service, retrieve update metadata and write or verify files. The message appears when one of those stages fails. Causes include a blocked connection, a damaged launcher cache or partial patch, security software preventing file replacement, insufficient disk space, restrictive permissions or a temporary service-side incident. A launcher that cannot check for updates is different from a confirmed game-file failure.
Do not assume the game needs a patch simply because the launcher cannot check. A scheduled maintenance period or outage requires waiting for an official announcement; local repairs cannot restore a service that is unavailable. Conversely, launching an old executable cannot install a mandatory patch.
Windows PC: the reliable troubleshooting path
1. Close HoYoPlay and restart Windows
Choose Exit in HoYoPlay, check the system tray, then open Task Manager and end only clearly related HoYoPlay, Genshin Impact or updater processes that remain. Restart the computer and try again. HoYoverse recommends a restart and closing resource-heavy background applications for launcher update failures (launcher update article).
2. Open the current launcher directly
Use the Windows Start menu or the HoYoPlay executable in its installed folder. A stale shortcut can point to a moved or incomplete launcher. HoYoverse specifically recommends opening HoYoPlay directly when it crashes or shows an update error (HoYoPlay troubleshooting).
3. Run Repair Now
- Open HoYoPlay and select Genshin Impact.
- Open the game menu or the control beside Start Game.
- Choose Repair Now (or the equivalent file-repair option).
- Allow verification and downloading to finish without closing the launcher.
- Restart HoYoPlay and check for updates again.
The wording and location can change between launcher versions and regions. The repair function addresses launcher/download components; it is not the same as the in-game integrity check available after reaching the login screen.
4. Establish whether the network is the problem
First confirm that ordinary websites work. Restart the router, switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet if possible, and test another Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot. If the hotspot works while home Wi-Fi does not, the likely fault is the original router, DNS, ISP route or network filtering rather than the game installation. HoYoverse asks for ISP and network-diagnostic details in persistent launcher cases (launcher-reporting requirements).

5. Remove connection intermediaries temporarily
Turn off VPNs, proxy settings, gaming accelerators and DNS-filtering or ad-blocking applications that operate at the network level. School, company, hotel and public networks may block patch traffic. The older official PC FAQ associates this exact wording with VPN, proxy and hosts-file checks, but its launcher terminology is obsolete; use it as network evidence rather than as a promise that its old menu paths still exist (historic PC FAQ).
Do not leave security protections disabled. Use this only as a diagnostic test, then restore protection and create an allow rule for the official launcher if necessary.
6. Check antivirus and firewall activity
- Open your antivirus quarantine or detection history.
- Look for recently blocked HoYoPlay or Genshin files.
- Restore a file only when you can verify it belongs to the official installation.
- Allow the official launcher and game through the firewall, or add their official folders to the antivirus exception list.
- Restart HoYoPlay.
Security software can block network access, quarantine a DLL or prevent replacement of files during extraction. HoYoverse documents quarantine checks and whitelisting for related launcher and extraction errors (error-code guidance; file-extraction guidance). Never download replacement DLLs from random websites.
7. Verify storage and permissions
Leave substantial free space on both the game drive and the Windows system drive. Updates may need temporary space for downloading, extraction and replacement, so an old fixed number is not a current universal requirement. Confirm that the drive is connected, healthy and writable, and avoid nearly full external drives. If extraction repeatedly fails, try another drive or installation location, as HoYoverse recommends (decompression-failure guidance).

Look for a current locate/import option before starting a new download. If none is available, contact support before deleting the existing files.
8. Use integrity checks only at the right stage
If you can reach the login screen, the wrench icon provides an integrity check. In the game, the documented route is Paimon Menu → Settings → Resources → Check Resource Integrity (integrity-check instructions). These options cannot help when HoYoPlay itself cannot download or start the client; use launcher repair first.

Close HoYoPlay before running it and reopen the launcher afterward. It is not a universal cure for every “Failed to check for updates” case. Close Epic, delete only the files inside that folder (not unrelated folders), then restart Epic. The path is version- and installation-specific, so do not create it blindly or apply official HoYoPlay instructions to an Epic installation (HoYoverse error-code guidance).
Optional advanced tests—and advice to avoid
DNS change
If the error occurs only on one network, changing DNS can be a reasonable, reversible routing test. Community guidance commonly uses Cloudflare (1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1) or Google (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4), but HoYoverse does not prescribe these addresses as a guaranteed fix for this message (community DNS recommendation). DNS will not repair corrupted files or an outage.
Direct executable launch
Community reports describe starting GenshinImpact.exe or Update.exe as a temporary workaround when an already-current installation has a broken launcher (community report; community report). It does not update the game, may fail after a mandatory patch and bypasses the normal launcher workflow. Use repair and official support instead of treating this as a fix.
Do not use legacy TCP commands or random cache deletions
Commands such as netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal, arbitrary hosts-file edits and undocumented cache deletion come from older community posts, not current HoYoverse guidance. They can create unrelated system or redownload problems. Community compilations also state that their fixes are unofficial (community disclaimer).
When reinstalling is justified
Reinstall when Repair Now repeatedly fails, files were quarantined or deleted, the installation is incomplete, the game was moved manually, or the drive is damaged or inaccessible. Download from the official Genshin website or the relevant platform store (official download guidance). Before deleting anything, verify that you can sign in to the correct HoYoverse account and server. Progress is server-side, but deleting the wrong installation can cost time and remove local voice packs or custom files.

If the error survives a different network, security check and launcher repair, collect the following before opening a ticket:
- Exact error text, screenshot or short video, and the date and time it occurred.
- Country or region, ISP, device model and Windows version.
- HoYoPlay version and antivirus/security software name.
dxdiag.txt: pressWin + R, enterdxdiag, choose Save All Information.- HoYoPlay logs from Settings → About → Upload Log or View Client Log, depending on the current UI.
DownloadError.log, when present, and network-detector results.
Use HoYoverse’s Issue Feedback route after signing in, or email [email protected] (evidence checklist; contact options). Never include your password, authentication code or account-recovery information.
