Uplay Not Launching? Fix Ubisoft Connect on PC

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Uplay will not open, troubleshoot Ubisoft Connect—Ubisoft’s current PC launcher and the successor to Uplay. Start by checking for a service problem, then close stuck processes and restart Windows. If the launcher opens blank or freezes, rename its cache folder. If the launcher works but a game does not, focus on game files, account linking, anti-cheat, or that title’s compatibility instead of reinstalling everything.

Ubisoft distributes the current client from its official download page. Ubisoft says it replaced Uplay in 2020; an old Uplay installer from another site is not the right way to repair the current client.

First identify what is not launching

The fix depends on where startup stops. Use this quick guide to choose a starting point; if more than one symptom fits, begin with the earliest step below.

What you see Start here
Nothing happens when you click Ubisoft Connect Close stuck Ubisoft processes and restart Windows.
A process appears, but there is no window, or the window is blank or frozen Close the processes, then rename the launcher cache.
The launcher opens only when run as administrator Check permissions and security software; treat administrator mode as a test, not an automatic permanent fix.
The launcher opens, but a game does not Check the signed-in account, game files, and any game-specific error such as anti-cheat.
A Steam or Epic launch stalls at Ubisoft Connect Sign into Ubisoft Connect first, then launch through the store that owns the game.
An older game cannot connect Check whether that title’s online services remain available; reinstalling the launcher cannot restore a retired service.

Try these fixes in order

  1. Check for a service or network problem. Look at Ubisoft’s official support channels for current service information, and check whether other Ubisoft games or account pages are also unavailable. If practical, try once on another network, such as a phone hotspot. Ubisoft notes that services can be temporarily unavailable because of platform, infrastructure, external-server, or operational failures. If the problem appears widespread, wait rather than changing local files.
  2. Close stuck processes and restart Windows. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. End Ubisoft Connect and clearly related Ubisoft launcher processes. If you launched through Steam or Epic, close that client too. Restart Windows, then open Ubisoft Connect from the Start menu. A frozen process running in the background can prevent a new window from appearing.
  3. Open the launcher directly, then test administrator mode. If the shortcut may be broken, open the installed executable. A common location is C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game LauncherUbisoftConnect.exe, but the folder can differ if you chose another install location or Ubisoft changed its layout. If a normal launch fails, right-click the shortcut and choose Run as administrator once. If that works, investigate permissions or security blocks; elevated mode is not a universal fix, and permanently running software with administrator rights has security and compatibility trade-offs.
  4. Rename the cache folder if the window is blank, frozen, or closes. Exit Ubisoft Connect and confirm in Task Manager that its processes have stopped. In the installation folder, rename cache to cache.old, then start the launcher again. A common folder is C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchercache; use the folder in your actual installation if it is elsewhere. Renaming is reversible: if it changes nothing, close the client and restore the original name. This targets launcher cache, not game ownership or installed games; do not delete game-installation folders as part of this step.
  5. Check security software, network filters, and overlays. Antivirus quarantine or ransomware protection, Windows or third-party firewalls, VPNs, proxies, DNS filters, overlays, and performance-tuning tools can interfere with startup or connection. For a brief diagnostic test, pause a third-party security tool only if you can do so safely; re-enable it immediately afterward. If the test identifies a block, add an exception only for the official Ubisoft executable, and keep firewall protection on. Do not download replacement DLLs or unofficial launcher-repair tools. Ubisoft’s terms note that its client or an internet connection may be needed for some games and features.
  6. Update Windows, drivers, and Ubisoft Connect. Install pending Windows updates, update graphics drivers from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel, and restart. If the client itself is outdated or damaged, download its current installer from Ubisoft, not a third-party site. For BattlEye-protected games, Ubisoft specifically recommends verifying game files, using the latest relevant client, and keeping drivers current; that guidance applies to BattlEye-related launch problems, not every launcher failure.
  7. Verify game files if Ubisoft Connect opens but one game fails. In Ubisoft Connect, open that game’s properties or management options and choose the available Verify, Verify files, or repair command. Labels may vary by client version. For a Steam or Epic installation, run that store’s own file-verification tool first, then open Ubisoft Connect and confirm the correct account is signed in. Let verification finish before retrying.
  8. Reinstall the client only if client-focused steps fail. Note where your installed games are stored. Uninstall Ubisoft Connect through Windows Settings, download the current installer from Ubisoft, reinstall, and sign into the account that owns the game. If installed games are not detected, point the client to their existing folders and verify them. A client reinstall and a game reinstall are different operations: do not blindly remove C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchergames or a custom game-library folder.

If Ubisoft Connect opens but the game will not launch

Check account ownership and activation

Sign out and back into the Ubisoft account that owns the game. Confirm which store sold or installed it—Ubisoft, Steam, Epic, or another authorized store—and check that the game is present in the expected account’s library or purchase history. If you see an ownership or activation error, check the linked account and entitlement rather than repeatedly entering a key unless the error specifically asks for one. Ubisoft says account access and the Connect client may be required for content and services. If the entitlement is missing or linked to the wrong account, contact Ubisoft Support instead of casually unlinking accounts; changing links can create further access problems.

Fix a Steam or Epic handoff

If the store reports the game is running but no game window appears, or the store opens Ubisoft Connect and then stalls, close both clients completely. Start Ubisoft Connect first and sign into the correct account; then open Steam or Epic and launch the game from the platform where it is installed. Verify files in that platform if needed. A handoff problem or account mismatch does not by itself mean the launcher installation is broken, and buying the game again on another platform is not a troubleshooting step.

Follow the game-specific error

If only one title fails, check for an incomplete update, anti-cheat error, graphics-driver or compatibility issue, mod conflict, overlay, or missing runtime. For a BattlEye message, start with Ubisoft’s BattlEye FAQ guidance on verifying files, updating clients, and drivers. A game that opens and immediately closes may need its own crash logs and title-specific support; another launcher reinstall may not address it.

Special cases: offline play and older games

Offline mode is not a universal workaround

Offline mode may help only when a particular game supports it and the installation or ownership has already been authenticated. It cannot restore online-only features, authenticate every new installation, or bypass a service the game requires. Ubisoft’s terms say some games or features need a permanent online connection.

Check service availability for legacy titles

Ubisoft has retired online services for some older games, citing obsolete technology among the reasons for decommissioning. Depending on the title and platform, single-player or offline play may remain while online functions, DLC access, or activation are affected. Check the status for the specific game; there is no reliable blanket fix for all Uplay-era titles. Ubisoft’s explanation is available in its legacy-services update.

When to contact Ubisoft Support

Stop repeating local fixes if the launcher still fails after a restart, cache reset, and current-client reinstall, or if the error concerns account ownership, activation, or a service outage. Include details that let support distinguish a client issue from a game or account problem:

  • The exact error text, plus a screenshot if possible.
  • The game title and whether it is installed through Ubisoft Connect, Steam, or Epic.
  • Your Windows version and Ubisoft Connect version, if the app displays it.
  • Whether the launcher opens directly, whether renaming the cache changed anything, and whether another network changed the result.
  • Recent Windows or driver updates, security-software detections, and relevant crash logs or screenshots.

Ubisoft’s privacy documentation describes technical-support diagnostics that may include configuration data, system or application logs, crash reports, and execution traces. Share relevant files through Ubisoft’s official support contact route.
