HyperX Cloud MIX Buds Review: A Clever Gaming Idea With Connection Caveats

The original HyperX Cloud MIX Buds are worth considering only if you specifically want true-wireless earbuds with a dedicated low-latency gaming connection—and can find a complete set at a substantial discount. Their 2.4GHz USB-C dongle is more suitable for responsive game audio than ordinary Bluetooth, while Bluetooth 5.2 handles everyday listening. But the dongle adds hassle, independent reviews reported connection and usability problems, and the 2022 model lacks active noise cancellation. At prices near its $149.99 launch price, it is difficult to recommend in 2026.

What makes the Cloud MIX Buds different?

These are true-wireless in-ear gaming earbuds built around two separate connection modes: a USB-C dongle for 2.4GHz wireless gaming and Bluetooth 5.2 for phones and general media. HyperX announced the original model in June 2022 at $149.99. Its launch package included a charging case, three sizes of silicone ear tips, a USB-C-to-USB-A cable, and adapter accessories intended to help connect the dongle to different devices. HyperX lists 12mm dynamic drivers and DTS Headphone:X virtual surround among the specifications. HyperX’s launch announcement is the source for those manufacturer claims.

The idea is straightforward: use Bluetooth for convenience, then switch to the dongle when game-audio timing matters. It is not a system for mixing two independent audio sources at once, and the dongle does not inherently improve sound quality. Its main purpose is to provide a gaming-focused wireless link.

Does the 2.4GHz dongle improve gaming?

It is the product’s main reason to exist. Bluetooth can add noticeable delay between an action on screen and its sound, while the 2.4GHz adapter is intended to reduce that lag. The difference matters most in rhythm games, shooters, competitive multiplayer, and games where quickly locating an audio cue can help. For casual games or video, Bluetooth may be perfectly adequate; for timing-sensitive play, the dongle is the more relevant mode.

SoundGuys found the low-latency connection useful for gaming but also noted practical drawbacks: the adapter can be awkward on phones, and its button can be pressed accidentally. It occupies the USB-C port, may not fit through a thick device case, and can prevent charging through that port while in use. The supplied cable and adapter arrangement can help with some setups, but it does not remove the port and portability trade-offs.

HyperX’s “ultra-low latency” positioning is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee that every game or device will behave identically. Bluetooth compatibility also does not mean Bluetooth will deliver the same latency as the dongle.

Which platforms are supported?

HyperX’s launch material lists PC, PlayStation consoles, Nintendo Switch, Android devices, and other Bluetooth-capable media devices. For 2.4GHz use, the device needs a suitable USB-C connection or an appropriate supplied adapter. Physical USB-C fit alone does not guarantee that every console supports the earbuds’ full feature set. The available launch information does not establish Xbox support, so Xbox buyers should not assume compatibility.

  • Phones and other Bluetooth devices: Bluetooth is the simpler option for calls and everyday media; the dongle may be cumbersome, especially if the same port is needed for charging.
  • Xbox: Support is not established by the cited HyperX launch information.

How do they sound for games and music?

For gaming, the most useful question is whether effects and directional cues are clear enough to follow, not whether a feature label promises surround sound. DTS Headphone:X is virtual audio processing, not physical multi-speaker surround, and it cannot guarantee accurate positional imaging in every game. HyperX’s launch announcement also specifies 7.1 surround capability, 48kHz sampling, and 16-bit audio; these are manufacturer specifications rather than independent measurements.

Try spatial processing both on and off if the device and software expose the setting. A virtual effect can change the presentation, but preference and game mix matter; it is not automatically an improvement. Sound may also differ between Bluetooth and 2.4GHz because the connection paths, codecs, or processing can differ.

For music and everyday listening, the original model has a harder job: it lacks active noise cancellation, a limitation called out in Digital Trends’ review at the original price. A good ear-tip seal is important for bass and passive isolation. If the sound seems thin, try another included tip size before deciding the tuning is the cause. The evidence cited here does not establish a measured frequency response or support claims of exceptional volume or distortion performance.

Microphone, fit, and controls

Voice chat

The earbuds’ built-in microphones keep the setup compact, but they do not provide the close, adjustable positioning of a boom microphone on a gaming headset. Treat them as a portable option for casual teammate chat rather than a broadcast-quality mic. Results can vary by connection mode, device, and background noise; the cited material does not establish a universal voice-quality result across PC, console, and phone. If clear calls in noisy surroundings are a priority, a headset with a boom mic or a dedicated microphone is the safer category to consider.

Fit and isolation

Three included silicone tip sizes give you options, but fit is individual. A secure seal affects bass, passive noise isolation, and perceived loudness; earbuds that loosen during movement may be a poor choice for active play. Consider whether the buds remain comfortable over a long session, whether they stay put when you move, and whether you can remove and replace them easily in the case. In-ear designs may also be uncomfortable when lying down or wearing them for extended periods, depending on ear shape.

Touch controls and the dongle

Touch controls can make playback and other functions accessible without reaching for a device, but they are less direct than physical headset controls and can be triggered unintentionally. The adapter itself has a physical button that SoundGuys reported could be hit accidentally. If you rely on quick, dependable muting or mode changes, test those actions with your actual setup rather than assuming a touch surface or small dongle button will feel natural.

Battery life: separate earbud runtime from case totals

HyperX’s launch specifications claim up to 10 hours from the earbuds and up to 33 hours total when using the charging case. They also list approximately two hours to charge the earbuds, 1.5 hours for the case, and four hours for the complete product. These are manufacturer figures, not independent runtime measurements. Actual endurance can vary with volume, Bluetooth versus 2.4GHz use, DTS processing, microphone use, battery age, and whether both earbuds are used continuously. As Tom’s Hardware notes, the total figure includes case recharges; it is not 33 hours of continuous earbud use.

Connection reliability and software caveats

The dual-wireless idea is useful only if switching and maintaining a connection are dependable. Tom’s Hardware characterized its experience as a “connection nightmare,” and SoundGuys also documented practical connection and usability concerns. Those are reports from independent reviews, not proof that every unit will fail; equally, there is no basis here to claim later firmware eliminated the reported problems. For a product whose central feature is swapping between wireless modes, reliability concerns deserve real weight.

HyperX configured the earbuds through NGENUITY, including sound-profile and touch-control customization. SoundGuys tested a review unit with firmware 3.1.0.2 and NGENUITY version 5.0.11. Those are historical test versions, not verified 2026 requirements. Current app behavior, firmware, and menu paths are not established by the available information, so avoid relying on a particular update or reset procedure without checking HyperX’s current support guidance for your device.

Cloud MIX Buds vs. Cloud MIX Buds 2

The Cloud MIX Buds 2 are a distinct newer model, not a feature update that should be confused with the original. HyperX’s current product page lists the second-generation model at a $149.99 MSRP and showed it out of stock in the United States in an August 18, 2026 observation; stock can change. Its specifications should not be attributed to the first-generation earbuds.

Should you buy the original Cloud MIX Buds in 2026?

Consider them only if the complete product is substantially cheaper than newer alternatives, the seller offers returns, and the 2.4GHz dongle and charging case are included. Because this is a 2022 product, remaining stock or used listings also bring battery-age, accessory, warranty, and condition questions. Missing the dongle removes the original’s main gaming advantage; no-return listings make those risks harder to manage.

  • They may suit you if: You want earbuds rather than a full headset, play on supported USB-C devices, value low-latency wireless more than ANC, and are willing to manage a separate adapter.
  • Look elsewhere if: You need ANC, seamless multipoint or simultaneous audio, dependable phone-call performance, confirmed Xbox support, or a dongle-free phone setup.
  • Choose a different category if: Wired USB-C or 3.5mm gaming earbuds better match your need for fewer batteries and connection variables, or a conventional wireless headset better fits your priorities for microphone quality, long-session comfort, and console support.

Digital Trends identified Razer Hammerhead gaming earbuds and Turtle Beach Scout Air as competitors at the time of its review, but current models, prices, and availability are not established here. Compare current specifications and platform support before choosing either. For HyperX’s own newer option, check the Cloud MIX Buds 2 listing; its stock status may change.
