1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMobile gaming is not waiting to become a major entertainment business: Sensor Tower estimates that mobile games generated $82 billion in in-app-purchase revenue in 2025. The next shift is broader than putting films and TV shows into apps. Entertainment companies are using games and social platforms to make franchises more participatory, persistent and connected across screens. That opportunity is real, but a large market does not make an individual game an easy bet.
How big is mobile gaming—and what do the numbers measure?
Two estimates show the scale, but they measure different things. Sensor Tower puts mobile-game in-app-purchase (IAP) revenue at $82 billion in 2025, while Newzoo estimates the global games market at $201.6 billion and the global player base at about 3.6 billion that year. These are market estimates with different methodologies, not figures that can be combined as if they shared one accounting definition. The $82 billion figure is IAP revenue, not all mobile-game income; it does not by itself include every advertising, subscription, premium-sale or licensing dollar. Sensor Tower’s 2025 estimates and Newzoo’s market report provide the respective context.
Sensor Tower also estimates that games were downloaded 52 billion times across platforms in 2025, with mobile making up the overwhelming majority. Downloads count installs, not people who keep playing, and one person may download multiple games. They are not a proxy for revenue or enduring popularity. For a deeper view of a game’s health, executives would also want active users, retention, session behavior, payer conversion, revenue per payer and update cadence—metrics not captured by a download total.
Store comparisons underline why “mobile” is not one uniform market. Sensor Tower estimates that Google Play produced more than four times the game downloads of Apple’s App Store, while the App Store generated substantially higher gaming IAP revenue. These are worldwide platform comparisons; results differ by market. China’s distribution and payment landscape also differs from the standard Google Play and App Store picture, so a global estimate should not be read as a description of every country or channel. Sensor Tower’s gaming overview details the comparison.

Nor does a store-revenue estimate necessarily equal what a publisher keeps. Consumer spending, gross bookings, store-estimated IAP, publisher net revenue after fees, advertising receipts, and licensing income are different measures. The $82 billion estimate should be read specifically as mobile IAP, rather than total mobile-game revenue or publisher take-home income.
Is the mobile gaming boom still accelerating?
The most accurate answer is that mobile gaming is huge and still monetizing, but the easy-growth story is over. Sensor Tower reported that mobile-game IAP revenue rose 4%, time spent rose 7.9%, and sessions rose 12% in 2024 compared with 2023. Its H1 2026 market index describes IAP revenue and time spent as broadly flat year over year while downloads continued to fall. The measures cover different periods, but together they point to a mature market in which revenue and engagement can diverge from installs. See Sensor Tower’s 2025 mobile-gaming report and its H1 2026 index.
Sensor Tower’s wider mobile-market analysis also says non-game apps overtook games in total mobile IAP revenue in 2025. That does not erase gaming’s scale; it is a reminder that games compete for both consumer spending and attention within a broader app economy. Sensor Tower’s State of Mobile 2026 discusses that shift.
Market maturity also makes entry harder. Long-running live-service games can hold player attention through events, social features and regular updates, while new releases must compete for discovery and time. A huge audience is an addressable market, not a guarantee of downloads, retention or profit for a newcomer.

Why are entertainment companies moving into games?
Turn a franchise into something audiences do
A film or series gives viewers a story; a game can let them inhabit its world, make choices, compete or play with friends. That can create a recurring activity between releases rather than a short promotional window. Netflix has offered mobile games tied to its entertainment properties, including Stranger Things and Rebel Moon. Its original announcement framed games as another way to experience entertainment on mobile. Netflix’s announcement is one example of the strategy.
Give subscribers reasons to return
A game in a streaming bundle can give members another reason to open the service between seasons or after finishing a show. Netflix says its mobile games are included with membership, with no ads, extra fees or in-app purchases in the cited offering; catalog access varies by country and device. The company’s move to selected TV games controlled with a phone extends the idea beyond mobile handsets. This is a retention and engagement experiment, not proof that games have reduced churn: the cited material does not establish a causal effect. Details are in the Netflix games support page and its TV-gaming announcement.
Build a more direct audience relationship
Games can generate repeated signals about sessions, progression, social interaction, purchases and reactions to events. Those signals may help a company understand what players respond to, but they are not a free or uncomplicated asset. Data use brings privacy obligations, platform policies and particular responsibilities around children; a company must earn trust as well as collect engagement.
Reach social and creator ecosystems
Roblox and Fortnite are not simply conventional mobile games. They are broader environments for social play, creator-built experiences, events and branded activity, with mobile access among their platforms. Roblox’s licensing platform gives rights holders and creators a mechanism for authorized IP-based experiences, subject to Roblox’s terms. Roblox’s announcement illustrates the move from a single downloadable title toward platform participation.

Make stories more interactive and extend the release cycle
Multiplayer play, branching decisions, live events and creator-made stories can add forms of participation that a film or episode does not provide. Games can also support seasonal updates, virtual items and collaborations beyond a premiere or launch window. But recurring engagement takes recurring work: a live game needs new content, balancing, support and community operations. The same ongoing cadence that can extend a franchise also raises its cost and execution risk.
Three approaches to games—and why they are not interchangeable
| Approach | What it offers | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Games bundled with a streaming subscription | A service can add play to an existing entertainment membership and use games to broaden the household proposition. | The service must make games discoverable and valuable enough to justify their place; results should not be assumed from the strategy alone. |
| Creator and social platforms | Brands can participate in worlds where users socialize, attend events and make or play experiences. | The rights holder gives up some control to platform rules, creators, moderation systems and algorithms. |
| Curated game subscriptions | A catalog can offer a paid, often ad-free alternative to free-to-play discovery and monetization. | Value depends on the catalog, supported devices, price, discovery and whether subscribers actually play. |
Apple Arcade is an example of a curated subscription model, not a direct equivalent to Netflix’s bundled games or creator platforms. Apple listed the U.S. price at $6.99 per month with a one-month free trial in an August 2025 announcement; price and trial terms can change. Apple’s announcement is the dated reference for those terms.
What the Netflix, Disney, and Mattel examples show
Netflix: games as part of a membership, not yet a proven churn solution
Netflix’s model puts mobile games inside a wider subscription proposition, rather than asking members to buy each title separately. The company has also announced Netflix Playground, a games app for children and families, and television games operated through a phone controller. Those moves show experimentation across age groups and screens; they do not establish how much revenue games contribute or how much they change retention. Netflix described Playground’s global availability in an April 2026 announcement. Netflix’s Playground announcement gives the company’s description.
Disney and Epic: a franchise inside a cross-platform ecosystem
Disney’s collaboration with Epic Games around Star Wars experiences in Fortnite points to a model broader than releasing a standalone tie-in. Disney describes experiences where audiences can enter worlds, watch, socialize and participate across PC, console and mobile. Fortnite remains Epic’s platform; the announcement should not be mistaken for Disney owning or controlling the whole environment. Disney’s broader corporate structure places film, television, streaming, games and digital entertainment within Disney Entertainment, but organizational alignment by itself does not prove the strategy’s financial success. See the Disney-Epic announcement and Disney’s segment announcement.

Mattel: own some capability, license and partner elsewhere
Mattel has described a digital strategy that combines licensing, self-published mobile games, Roblox and Fortnite. Its plan to acquire full ownership of mobile-game studio Mattel163 signals interest in owning more development and publishing capability, alongside external partnerships. Ownership can increase control over product and economics, but it also means taking on development, user acquisition, live operations and compliance risks. Mattel’s announcement sets out the stated strategy; it is not evidence that every planned title will succeed.

Free-to-play with in-app purchases
Free entry can reduce friction and reach a broad audience, while optional purchases fund a game’s operations. The model can also concentrate spending in a small payer group, depend heavily on retention and live updates, and create pressure to monetize aggressively. Randomized purchases and other spending mechanics raise ethical and regulatory concerns, particularly for young players. App-store policies and fees are another dependency.
Advertising
Ads can earn revenue from players who never buy items, a fit used especially by casual games. They can interrupt play, rely on ad networks and require privacy-conscious consent and data practices. A premium entertainment brand may also decide that frequent ad placements conflict with its tone or audience expectations.
Subscription bundles
Subscriptions can remove per-game purchase decisions and, depending on the offering, ads or IAP. They shift the challenge to catalog quality, discovery, revenue allocation and the perceived value of the bundle. A game being included in a subscription does not show that subscribers play it or that it improves renewal rates.

Licensing and self-publishing
Licensing a world to an experienced developer can provide specialist production and operations without building every capability internally. It also involves revenue sharing, creative oversight and the risk of a poor game reflecting on the underlying property. Self-publishing can give a rights holder more control, but brings the full burden of development, marketing, customer service and ongoing updates.
Creator-platform economics
Roblox and Fortnite can give brands access to creator energy and social discovery rather than one centrally authored game. That opens room for varied experiences and faster experimentation, but brings uneven quality, moderation and safety responsibilities, licensing complexity, and dependence on platform rules and discovery systems.
What can derail a brand’s game strategy?
- A weak player loop: Replaying a film’s plot is not enough. A successful adaptation needs a reason to return—such as skill, collection, social play or meaningful progression—that fits the property.
- Launching too late or too cheaply: A rushed tie-in may arrive after audience interest has moved on, or earn poor reviews that damage the brand.
- Underestimating live operations: Launch is a starting point, not the end. Content calendars, balancing, customer support, anti-cheat, moderation, localization, device compatibility and community management all require resources.
- Choosing a monetization model that breaks trust: Aggressive purchasing mechanics or intrusive ads can undermine a family-friendly or premium brand even if they generate short-term revenue.
- Ignoring children’s safety and privacy: A young audience makes parental controls, age-appropriate design, moderation and compliant data practices central product requirements, not optional polish.
- Assuming ownership means independence: Stores and platforms influence discovery, payments, technical requirements, safety rules and access to users. Owning the characters does not necessarily mean owning the audience relationship.
- Confusing market growth with company-level odds: A growing industry can coexist with studio closures, layoffs, rising costs and hit-driven returns. Aggregate demand is not an investment case for any single game.
When is a mobile or platform game a good fit for a franchise?
A property is a stronger candidate when its appeal can support repeat play rather than only a finite story. Before committing, a rights holder should be able to answer these questions:
- Is there a large, active fan base in the target markets, and can it be reached at a sustainable cost?
- Do the characters or world support clear gameplay, social interaction or competition beyond a promotional retelling?
- Can the visual design and controls work on small screens, or does the concept need a broader cross-platform plan?
- Is there a credible schedule of updates, events and support after launch?
- Does the partner have live-operations experience, and are ownership, licensing and revenue-sharing terms clear?
- Does the chosen monetization model fit the brand, audience age and level of creative control?
- Are moderation, privacy, localization, device support and customer-service responsibilities funded and assigned?
A short, plot-dependent property, a small audience that cannot support acquisition costs, or a brand that cannot tolerate free-to-play monetization may be better served by a limited licensed experience—or no game at all. The same applies when the rights holder cannot support updates or safety operations. The choice is not simply between making a mobile game and ignoring games; licensing and creator-platform participation are different ways to engage, each with less or more control.
So, is mobile gaming the entertainment industry’s next big thing?
Mobile gaming itself is already one of entertainment’s biggest businesses, and its audience is not growing at the same pace as its earlier land-grab era. The more consequential opportunity is convergence: games as a way for film, television, streaming, toys and creators to turn stories into social, recurring experiences across devices. That can deepen fandom and create new ways to engage, but it does not make every franchise a game business. The winners will need a compelling player experience, durable operations and a model that earns audience trust—not merely a recognizable logo.
