To fully turn off your Quest 2, hold the headset’s power button until the power menu appears, choose Power Off, and wait for the display to go dark. The headset is now branded Meta Quest 2, though many owners still know it as Oculus Quest 2.
Turn off a Quest 2 with the power menu
- Wake the headset if it is asleep. The headset’s physical power button is on its right side; it is not the Meta/Oculus button on the right controller.
- Press and hold the headset’s power button until the power options appear. The hold time can vary with software, so keep holding until you see the menu rather than relying on an exact number of seconds.
- Select Power Off. Do not select Sleep or Restart.
- Wait for the display to turn off. The power indicator should go dark; a shutdown chime may also play.

Sleep, Power Off, and Restart are different

| Power Off | Shuts down the headset. | You have finished, are storing or transporting it, or want to avoid leaving it in standby. |
| Restart | Shuts down and boots the headset again. | You are troubleshooting an app, tracking, audio, or other unusual behavior. |
Sleep can continue to use battery, so use Power Off when you want the headset shut down. Battery can still discharge gradually over time even when the headset is off.
If the power menu will not appear or the headset is frozen
First wake the headset and try the normal power-menu method once. If the display or controls are clearly unresponsive, use a hard reboot. Meta support has recommended this for a Quest 2 that takes unusually long to power off:

- Hold the headset’s Power and Volume Down (-) buttons together for about 30 seconds, until the boot screen or boot-up sound appears.
- If a boot menu appears, use the volume buttons to highlight Boot Device, then press Power to select it.
- If asked to confirm, select Yes with the Power button.
This is a recovery reboot, not a normal shutdown. The Meta support response describes the procedure; menu wording may change with firmware.
If shutdown is still slow or the headset remains stuck
- If shutdown appears to be progressing, give it a short while before interrupting it.
- After the hard reboot, try a normal shutdown again.
- If the problem returns, check for a headset software update or contact Meta Quest Support.
- Do not factory-reset the headset as an initial fix. A factory reset erases local data and is not a way to turn the device off.
A brief press that only wakes or sleeps the headset can also explain why it seems off but continues to lose battery. For a slow shutdown, Meta’s troubleshooting discussion likewise points to a hard reboot before escalating.

How to tell whether it is completely off
The display should be dark and the power indicator should be off. A chime can provide another clue, but it may be muted or hard to hear, so do not rely on sound alone. If the headset wakes as soon as it is handled or its proximity sensor is uncovered, it may have been asleep rather than powered off. The headset can charge while on, asleep, or powered off. For storage or transport, choose Power Off rather than leaving it asleep. Avoid unnecessary heat or background activity while charging.
