If an old Origin shortcut no longer opens, install the current EA app—EA’s supported desktop launcher for PC and Mac. If the EA app opens but hangs, try Help → App Recovery → Clear cache; if only one game fails, repair that game from your Library instead. These steps target different problems, so first identify whether the launcher, your account or connection, or a particular game is at fault.
First, identify what is not loading
EA replaced Origin with the EA app as its current PC and Mac desktop platform. An old Origin shortcut may therefore be the wrong starting point: use EA’s official installer rather than an unofficial archived Origin download. Sign in with the EA Account that owns or provides access to your games.
Separate a launcher failure from a game failure before changing files:
- Nothing happens, or the launcher window opens and closes: troubleshoot the EA app itself.
- The app opens but shows a blank library, spinner, or offline status: check the app cache, account, and EA service or internet connection.
- The app works but one game will not start: repair that game and check its own launch dependencies.
- Several EA services fail at once: check EA’s live server-status page before making local changes. Look at the EA app service and, where relevant, the individual game. A confirmed outage cannot be fixed by deleting local files.
If the game was bought through Steam, Steam may also be part of its launch and connection chain. EA recommends checking Steam Support for additional connection help: EA connection troubleshooting.

Fix the EA app when it will not open
Check whether your computer is supported
EA’s current requirements list 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 and macOS 10.15.8 or later for the desktop app. The EA app is not a native Chromebook application. Requirements can change; check EA’s current installation and update guidance if your system is close to those limits.
Clear the cache without opening the app (Windows)
- Open the Windows Start menu and select All Apps.
- Find and expand the EA folder.
- Select App Recovery, then choose Clear Cache in the confirmation window.
- Let App Recovery finish, then open the EA app again and sign in.
This is EA’s documented route when the app itself will not open. Cache clearing can help with offline, update, download, and library problems; it is not a guaranteed fix for every startup crash and cannot resolve an EA outage. See EA’s cache instructions.
Restart, then check security software
After clearing the cache, restart the computer and try the app again. If it still exits or never appears, confirm that you installed it from EA, then check whether your firewall or antivirus is blocking the EA app. EA names these Windows executables for allow-listing:
EADesktop.exeEALauncher.exeEABackgroundService.exe
Add a targeted exception for the verified EA files rather than disabling antivirus protection globally. These files are in the EA app installation folder. A school, workplace, or otherwise managed computer may prevent you from changing these settings; ask its administrator rather than bypassing its controls. EA’s installation guidance covers the app’s security and installation requirements.

Update the app and operating system
The EA app normally updates automatically when you log in. If it was already running when an update became available, exit and restart it to prompt the update; check that automatic updates have not been disabled. Install pending Windows or macOS updates as well. Avoid unofficial old Origin installers.
Fix a loading, blank-library, or offline problem
Restart the app and clear its cache
If the EA app opens, use its menu to select Help → App Recovery → Clear cache. On Windows, the menu is the three-dash icon at the far left; on macOS, start from Help. Menu wording can vary slightly by release. When the app is responsive, you can also choose Help → Restart app to refresh a library that has not loaded correctly. EA documents both cache clearing and restarting in its cache instructions and missing-games guidance.
Sign in to the right account
- Sign out of the EA app, close it, and open it again.
- Sign in with the EA Account used to buy the game or redeem access to it.
- If you access the game through EA Play, check that the membership is active.
A different account or an expired subscription can make a game appear missing even when the launcher itself is working. Do not create a new account as a first troubleshooting step. EA’s missing-games guidance covers account ownership and entitlement checks.
Check EA service status and your connection
Check the EA app and relevant game on the server-status page. If services are available but the app remains offline or cannot update, confirm that the computer has an internet connection. EA suggests restarting the router: switch it off, unplug it for 15 seconds, reconnect it, and power it back on. This is most relevant to offline, update, and library-loading problems—not an app that crashes before displaying a window. See EA’s connection and installation guidance.

Fix a game that will not launch
Repair the game files
If the EA app opens and one game fails, use the game repair tool rather than repeating launcher resets:
- Open Library and find the game.
- Select its Manage icon or three-dot menu.
- Choose Repair and wait for the file check to finish.
- Try launching the game again.
Repair checks the game installation; it does not fix an account, server, operating-system, or hardware problem. EA’s crashing and freezing guidance documents this path.
Check for Windows DirectX errors
If an error mentions DirectX or missing libraries, use EA’s Windows-specific steps: close the EA app, check for pending Windows updates, and, if required, download and run Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime installer before relaunching the app. Follow EA’s DirectX troubleshooting instructions; this is not a general fix for every loading problem.
Use a clean boot to find background conflicts
If the app or game still fails and you suspect another program is interfering, a Windows clean boot can help identify background tasks that affect installation, launch, or content access. This is a diagnostic, not a permanent fix: if the app works in a clean boot, re-enable services in batches to isolate the conflict.

EA’s procedure starts by opening Start, typing msconfig, and pressing Enter. In System Configuration, hide Microsoft services before disabling non-Microsoft services. Incorrect changes can affect the computer; if you are not comfortable with this process, seek help rather than proceeding. Follow EA’s clean-boot instructions.
Reinstall the EA app only after simpler fixes fail
Reinstalling can address a damaged launcher installation, but it is not the first step. Try cache clearing, account and service checks, security exceptions, updates, and game repair where appropriate first. Uninstalling the EA app temporarily prevents you from playing games that depend on it or using related downloaded content until the app is installed again.
EA says the reinstalled app will try to locate existing games, but discovery is not guaranteed. Do not delete game folders as part of a routine launcher reset. For a failed installation, EA’s guidance is to remove the EA app files or folder associated with that failed installation, download a fresh installer from EA, and run it again. Its listed default locations are:
- Windows:
C:Program FilesElectronic ArtsEA DesktopEA Desktop - Mac: in Finder, use Go → Go to Folder and enter
/Library/Application Support/Electronic Arts/EA app
These are launcher locations, not instructions to remove game installations. For the uninstall caveat and current installation process, see EA’s uninstall guidance and installation guidance.

When to send EA a report
If the app still fails after the relevant steps, use the EA Error Reporter and keep its Report ID for your support case. On Windows, EA lists these log folders; you may need to attach the logs manually:
%localappdata%Electronic ArtsEA DesktopLogsC:ProgramDataEA DesktopLogs
Include your Windows or macOS version, the exact error message, whether the app opens at all, whether one game or all games are affected, and which troubleshooting steps changed the result. EA explains how to create a report at EA Error Reporter help.
A registry cleaner, generic driver updater, paid PC-repair utility, or VPN is not required by the EA troubleshooting steps above. Avoid adding tools or changing security protections broadly when the problem may be an outdated launcher, cache issue, account mismatch, or service outage.
