Steam DLC is generally eligible for a refund within 14 days of purchase if the underlying game has been played for less than two hours since that DLC was bought, and the content has not been consumed, modified, or transferred. To request one, open the purchase in Steam Support and submit a refund request; approval is not guaranteed, especially for irreversible content or requests outside the standard rules.
Steam DLC refund rules at a glance
Steam’s published refund policy, marked last updated April 23, 2024, sets the standard conditions below. The purchase-specific decision in Steam Support is authoritative for your transaction.

How to request a Steam DLC refund
- Go to Steam’s purchase refund wizard or open Steam Support at help.steampowered.com.
- Sign in to the Steam account that bought the DLC.
- Open the purchase-help or recent-purchases area and select the DLC transaction. You can also reach the list in the client or website through Account Details → View purchase history. Steam refund questions.
- Choose the refund option shown for that transaction, select a reason, and choose the refund destination if Steam offers a choice.
- Add a brief explanation if it helps clarify the circumstances, then submit the request.
- Keep the confirmation email or support-ticket details so you can check the outcome.
Steam’s account-specific support flow may display different wording or steps in the client and browser. Start from the purchase itself rather than a generic contact form. Refunds are generally returned to the original payment method where supported; otherwise Steam may credit your Wallet.

Does old playtime in the game count?
Steam’s DLC rule refers to playtime in the underlying title since the DLC was purchased. Having dozens of hours in the base game before buying the add-on does not, by itself, establish that this two-hour condition has been exceeded. Check the playtime accrued after the DLC purchase. Steam’s support system makes the decision, so this wording is not a guarantee of approval.
Steam says online, offline, and shared-library playtime can count in its playtime calculations. Do not assume the relevant time is only a session in which you actively used the DLC, or that every DLC comes with a separate two-hour trial. Steam’s common refund questions.
What if the DLC was downloaded, activated, or used?
Downloading the files alone is not identified in Steam’s published DLC rule as an automatic disqualifier. The key questions are the post-purchase playtime and whether the content was consumed, modified, or transferred. Automatic activation also does not necessarily mean the content was consumed, but eligibility depends on what the DLC actually did.

- Consumed: Currency, a boost, or a one-use item has been spent or used.
- Modified: The content irreversibly changed a character, progression, account, save state, or other game element. Steam gives irreversible character-level changes as an example of third-party DLC that may be nonrefundable.
- Transferred: The content or entitlement was moved, traded, gifted, or passed to another account or system in a way that cannot be reversed.
These examples depend on how the particular game handles the DLC; do not treat installation or an entitlement appearing in your library as proof either way.
DLC is not the same as an in-game purchase
A Steam Store expansion, season pass, or add-on follows the DLC conditions above. A purchase made inside a game may instead fall under Steam’s separate in-game purchase rules:
- For Valve-developed games, eligible in-game purchases may be refunded within 48 hours if the item has not been consumed, modified, or transferred.
- For games from other developers, the developer chooses whether to enable refunds under those terms. Steam indicates eligibility at purchase; otherwise, in-game purchases in non-Valve games are not refundable through Steam.
Check the item’s purchase page and support options rather than assuming that DLC and in-game currency or items share a refund window. Steam Refunds.

Bundles, season passes, gifts, and preorders
Bundles and season passes
Steam says a full bundle refund can be available when none of its items have been transferred and combined usage is under two hours. If a bundle contains a nonrefundable in-game item or DLC, Steam says it will indicate eligibility during checkout. A season pass may be classified as DLC, a bundle, or a package of multiple entitlements, so check the specific transaction and Steam’s eligibility message.
Gifts
Steam’s general gift policy allows an unredeemed gift to be refundable within the standard period. If the recipient has redeemed it, the recipient must initiate or approve removal before the purchaser can complete the refund. If the DLC is part of a preorder or unreleased product, use Steam’s purchase-specific support flow and consult its preorder refund guidance. Do not assume the ordinary post-release DLC calculation answers every preorder case.

How long does a Steam refund take?
Steam says an approved refund can take up to seven days to appear. Approved Steam Wallet credit typically takes 24–48 hours; refunds to international payment methods may take longer. If your original payment method cannot accept the refund, Steam may put the money in your Wallet. These are stated timeframes, not guarantees. Steam refund questions.
A purchase canceled shortly after it was made may appear as a pending card authorization rather than a separate refund. Steam says the bank may take up to 30 days to release that hold; this is different from waiting for a posted refund.

After a refund is processed, expect the DLC entitlement to be removed or disabled on the purchasing account, and access to content that depends on it may disappear. Steam says refunding a game does not remove its playtime or achievements from your Steam Community Profile. That statement concerns profile records; it does not guarantee that a developer’s save data or account-side progression will be restored or remain usable.

What to do if Steam denies the request
- Check the DLC purchase date and the underlying game’s playtime since that purchase.
- Consider whether any content was consumed, irreversibly changed, or transferred, and whether the Store page marked it nonrefundable.
- If the decision seems mistaken or there are exceptional circumstances, submit another request through Steam Support with a detailed explanation. Steam says users can submit another request; doing so does not guarantee a different decision.
A concise explanation could say: “I purchased [DLC name] on [date]. The underlying game has [time] played since purchase. The DLC has not been consumed, modified, or transferred. Please review my refund request.” Include only details that are accurate for your purchase.
If the issue is a crash, gameplay bug, server problem, or other technical fault after the game loads, contact the developer or publisher for troubleshooting. Use Steam Support for payment, ownership, or refund questions. Steam’s third-party game support guidance.
If an approved refund is missing, check purchase history and your Steam Wallet first, allow the stated processing time, and ask your bank about a pending or reversed authorization. If the money still has not appeared after Steam’s stated period, contact Steam Support again. Avoid treating a bank chargeback as the routine next step; it is not Steam’s ordinary refund process and may create account or payment complications.
When Steam cannot refund the purchase
Valve says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, including third-party CD keys, Steam Wallet cards bought from third parties, and purchases from external retailers. Contact the seller that took your payment. Steam Refunds.
Steam reserves the right to restrict refund access if it believes the system is being abused. Use the policy for genuine purchases you want reversed, not as a repeated free-trial mechanism. Steam also says requesting a refund for a qualifying purchase made just before a sale and then buying it again at the sale price is not considered abuse.
