Probably not—unless your game server has sustained, measured demands that a shared or virtual server cannot meet, or you need specific hardware or physical isolation. For many private servers and smaller communities, a VPS is a better starting point. If CPU performance is inconsistent, a VPS with dedicated CPU resources may be enough; bare metal makes sense when you can use its capacity and justify the added cost and administration.
“Dedicated server” can mean a physical machine reserved for you, a virtual machine with guaranteed CPU resources, or a cloud VM on hardware reserved for one customer. These are different products, and only the first is a bare-metal server.
What kind of “dedicated server” are you considering?
In game hosting, the phrase can describe several different arrangements. Check what the provider is actually dedicating: the whole physical machine, CPU access, or the underlying host tenancy.
| Option | What is dedicated | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|
| Shared hosting | Provider-managed hosting environment; root access and resource controls vary. | A conventional site or service that needs little configuration. |
| Shared-CPU VPS | A virtual machine; CPU resources may be shared with other workloads. | Development, a small community server, or a bursty workload that can tolerate CPU variability. |
| Dedicated-CPU VPS | Guaranteed access to specified CPU resources, while the server remains virtualized. | A production game server that needs more predictable CPU performance but not a whole physical machine. |
| Dedicated-tenancy cloud VM | The VM runs on hardware reserved for a customer or account; physical placement control depends on the product. | A specific isolation, licensing, or procurement requirement alongside cloud services. |
| Bare-metal dedicated server | A physical server allocated to one customer. | Sustained heavy workloads, specialized hardware, or substantial storage and bandwidth needs. |
| Managed service | The provider operates more of the game-hosting or application stack; the precise scope varies. | People who value less server administration over low-level control. |
For example, DigitalOcean distinguishes shared-CPU Droplets from dedicated-CPU Droplets, where CPU access is guaranteed; that does not make the latter bare metal. AWS likewise distinguishes Dedicated Instances from Dedicated Hosts: Instances run on hardware dedicated to one customer account, while Hosts provide more visibility and placement control for certain licensing scenarios. DigitalOcean’s plan guidance and AWS’s tenancy documentation describe these distinctions.

For game hosting, what problem are you trying to solve?
Player count alone does not tell you whether you need bare metal. The game, server software, mods, map, tick rate, plugins, network conditions, and the number of active players all affect resource use. A small private server may run comfortably on a VPS; a busy public server or game-hosting business may have sustained CPU, memory, storage, bandwidth, or DDoS-protection requirements that call for a different setup.
Separate the problem before buying hardware:
- Inconsistent CPU performance: A shared-CPU VPS may be the limitation. Test a dedicated-CPU VPS before assuming you need a physical server. DigitalOcean recommends dedicated CPU for production workloads where variable CPU performance is unacceptable, and Hetzner describes its dedicated-resource cloud plans as providing exclusive CPU resources. DigitalOcean plan guidance; Hetzner Cloud FAQ.
- Memory pressure: Check actual RAM use and swap activity. A CPU upgrade will not resolve memory exhaustion.
- High disk latency or storage capacity: Examine storage performance and growth. A larger disk alone does not guarantee faster reads and writes.
- Network problems: Measure throughput and latency, and check provider policies. A bandwidth allowance is not a guarantee of low latency or a particular port speed.
- Game or plugin bottleneck: A single-threaded server process, inefficient mod, or overloaded plugin may remain slow even on a large machine.
- Availability concerns: A single dedicated server is still one machine and can fail. More hardware in one box does not create automatic failover.
When is a VPS enough for a game server?
A VPS is usually the sensible first choice for a private server, a small community, development and testing, or a new project whose demand is uncertain. It is also useful when you want root access and custom configuration without paying for a whole physical machine. A shared-CPU VPS can be economical for a light or intermittent workload, provided occasional performance variation is acceptable.
If the game server is in production and players experience performance variation, first determine whether CPU contention is the cause. A dedicated-CPU VPS can offer more predictable CPU access while retaining virtual-machine provisioning and resizing options. It is often a practical middle step between a shared VPS and bare metal.

For an established service, track average and peak CPU use, memory high-water marks, swap, disk latency, network throughput, player-facing response or tick behavior, and the duration of busy periods. Collect a representative baseline—seven to fourteen days is a useful target for a business-critical workload—rather than making a decision from one brief observation. Visitor or player counts alone are not a reliable sizing metric.

A physical dedicated server is worth evaluating when your workload is sustained, you can use a substantial share of the machine, and a larger or dedicated-CPU VPS is insufficient, unavailable, or poor value for the capacity required. It can also be appropriate when a game-hosting operation needs extensive local storage, multiple disks or RAID, specialized CPU or GPU hardware, or high and steady bandwidth.
Game servers are workload-specific. A small private game world may fit a VPS; a public platform, large concurrent player base, or esports event may require more CPU, memory, bandwidth, and protection against network attacks. OVHcloud lists game hosting among potential dedicated-server uses but also describes VPS hosting as appropriate for projects that do not need exceptional performance or specialized infrastructure. OVHcloud’s comparison outlines its product distinction.

Bare metal is not automatically faster. CPU generation and clock behavior, memory bandwidth, storage configuration, network routing, software tuning, and the game server’s own limits all matter. Compare the actual hardware and test with a representative game workload, not just a “dedicated” label.
Does a dedicated server make your game more reliable?
Not by itself. A lone physical server remains a single failure domain: hardware failure, a bad update, a network problem, or an application crash can take the service offline. High availability usually requires a separate design, such as multiple application instances, load balancing where the game architecture supports it, health checks, a recovery plan, off-machine backups, and tested restoration. Replicated or managed databases may be relevant for services that use them.

How to decide without guessing
- Measure the current server. Record CPU average and peaks over time, RAM use and swap, disk latency and throughput, network traffic, and the game’s player-facing performance during quiet and busy periods.
- Identify the bottleneck. Classify it as CPU, memory, storage, network, game software, provider limits, or architecture. A more powerful server will not fix an inefficient plugin or a network path problem.
- Test the next smaller step. Try a larger VPS or dedicated-CPU VPS if CPU contention is the issue. Consider separating background jobs or using a managed service where that removes operational work.
- Compare total cost. Include server rent, setup, backups, storage, bandwidth or egress, DDoS protection, support, software licensing, migration effort, and the time required for administration and incident response.
- Check recovery and migration. Confirm OS and architecture support, backup restoration, rescue access, replacement procedures, IP or DNS changes, billing and cancellation terms, and how long migration or recovery takes.
Optional Linux checks can help with a first look at system pressure:
uptime
free -h
vmstat 1
mpstat -P ALL 1
These commands show load, memory and swap activity, and per-CPU utilization; a short sample is not a capacity plan. Use a staging environment for disk or application benchmarks, and do not run a write-heavy disk test against a live game or database volume without understanding its effects. Network tests should run only between systems you control.
What will the dedicated server add to your workload?
With bare metal, you gain more control over the physical CPU, memory, disks, and network configuration, but also take on more infrastructure responsibility unless you buy clearly scoped managed support. Confirm what the provider manages rather than assuming “managed” includes everything.

- Backups, restore tests, storage health, and any RAID replacement process.
- Monitoring, capacity planning, and hardware failure recovery.
- Game updates, mod compatibility, configuration, and player support.
A dedicated server does not automatically include managed patching, replicated storage, autoscaling, multi-region deployment, or a recovery plan.
Which option should you choose?
- Choose managed game hosting or managed application hosting if your priority is getting a game online without taking on system administration. Check the provider’s exact management, backup, and DDoS-protection scope.
- Choose a shared-CPU VPS for a small, low-cost or experimental server if its performance is adequate and some CPU variability is acceptable.
- Choose a dedicated-CPU VPS when you need predictable CPU access but do not need physical hardware control.
- Choose a dedicated-tenancy cloud VM or Dedicated Host only when a specific isolation, licensing, or procurement requirement justifies that tenancy model; it is not a general-purpose speed upgrade.
- Choose bare metal when measurements, economics, or a hardware requirement show that virtualization is the wrong constraint—and you have a plan for administration and failure recovery.
- Choose multiple smaller instances or services when independent scaling and limiting the impact of a single-machine failure matter more than keeping everything on one box.
A dedicated server is best treated as a response to demonstrated demand, not as a bet on future growth. DigitalOcean’s guidance describes shared CPU as suitable for lower-to-medium-load and bursty use cases and dedicated CPU for workloads that cannot tolerate variable performance. See its plan-selection guidance.
