A standard Microsoft Xbox One Wireless Controller uses Micro-USB (Micro-B), not USB-C. The usual cable is USB-A to Micro-USB. The newer Xbox Series X|S controller has USB-C but can also work with an Xbox One console, so check the controller’s port rather than the console it connects to.
What cable does a standard Xbox One controller need?
Use a USB-A to Micro-USB data cable: the smaller Micro-USB end plugs into the controller, and the USB-A end plugs into the console or a computer with a USB-A port. Microsoft’s Xbox One support instructions specify a USB-to-Micro-USB cable for the controller: Xbox Wireless Controller troubleshooting.
For PC connection or controller updates, choose a cable advertised as sync-and-charge or data-capable. A charge-only cable may supply power without carrying the data needed for a computer to detect the controller. The cable does not need to be Microsoft-branded. Cable length is a matter of convenience, but avoid a loose plug or a cable that puts strain on the controller port.

- Not interchangeable: USB-C, Mini-USB, and Lightning cables do not fit its Micro-USB port.
Where is the USB port?
Look along the controller’s top edge, between the shoulder buttons and triggers. The Micro-USB port is there. It is separate from the 3.5-mm headset jack on the lower edge and from the accessory expansion port. Microsoft’s controller information describes controller features and notes that expansion-port availability can vary by version.

Micro-USB is small and asymmetrical, with a trapezoid-like outline, and only inserts one way. USB-C is more oval and reversible. Do not force a USB-C plug into a Micro-USB port.
Xbox One and Xbox Series controllers use different ports
The phrase “Xbox One controller” can be confusing because a newer Xbox Series controller can connect to an Xbox One console. Compatibility does not make the connectors the same: standard Xbox One-generation wireless pads use Micro-USB, while the Xbox Series X|S Wireless Controller uses USB-C. Microsoft confirmed the newer controller’s USB-C connector and cross-generation compatibility in its Xbox Series X controller announcement.

Model numbers are useful clues, not a substitute for checking the port: special editions and third-party controllers may differ. Microsoft’s current Xbox Wireless Controller information identifies USB-C on the newer controller and lists Xbox One compatibility.
Can you play without batteries, and does the cable charge them?
Yes. A standard Xbox One Wireless Controller can operate while connected by Micro-USB without AA batteries, according to Microsoft’s troubleshooting instructions. In that setup, the cable powers the controller and carries its data; it does not charge disposable AA batteries.

If you have an Xbox One Play & Charge Kit or another compatible rechargeable battery pack, the cable can provide the charging connection intended for that pack. Charging behavior depends on the pack. If there is no battery pack installed, the controller can still run over the cable.
Connect the controller to an Xbox One or Windows PC
On an Xbox One console
- Find the Micro-USB port on the controller’s top edge.
- Insert the Micro-USB end of a compatible cable into the controller, then plug the USB-A end into a USB port on the console.
- Press the Xbox button and wait for the console to recognize the controller. It can be used over the cable without batteries.
On a Windows PC
- Use a Micro-USB data cable, not a charge-only cable.
- Connect the cable to the controller and a USB port on the computer.
- Give Windows time to detect and configure the controller, then try it in a compatible game. Microsoft’s older Xbox Controller + Cable for Windows documentation specifies a Micro-USB cable.
- If you need firmware or button-mapping tools, open the Xbox Accessories app. Detection can vary with Windows version, drivers, USB port, cable, and controller firmware.
If the controller is not detected
- Check that the controller has Micro-USB, and that the cable’s plug fits without force.
- Try another known-good Micro-USB data cable. A charge-only cable may power the controller but fail to connect it to a PC.
- Try a different USB port on the console or computer.
- Unplug and reconnect the cable firmly, without wiggling or forcing it. Inspect the port for lint, a loose fit, bent contacts, or visible damage.
- Restart the console or PC, then test the controller on another compatible device if available.
- If the connection works only while the plug is held at an angle, the controller’s port or cable may be worn or damaged.
If wired connection works but wireless does not, investigate pairing and battery issues separately. A cable connection does not establish that wireless pairing is working.

What about third-party wired controllers?
Controllers marketed for Xbox One are not all built alike. A third-party pad may have a fixed cable, Micro-USB, USB-C, or a proprietary connector. Check the exact controller model or inspect its port before buying a cable; do not assume that “for Xbox One” means Micro-USB.
