Common causes include a muted controller or headset, the wrong microphone or output device, game chat being muted in the Control Center, or the console still prioritizing party chat. The PS5’s party chat, a game’s voice chat, and Discord are separate channels, so a working party does not prove the game’s chat is working.
Start with the quick checks below before changing router settings or replacing hardware. The DualSense has a built-in microphone, which makes it useful for testing without a headset.
Run these quick checks first
- Check the DualSense mute button and any headset mute switch; unmute both.
- Open Settings > Sound > Microphone, select the microphone you intend to use, and choose Adjust Microphone Level. Speak and check that the meter responds.
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the intended output device. If you use a headset, check Output to Headphones.
- Press the PS button, open the active voice-chat card, and select Game Voice Chat if you mean to talk to people in the game rather than a PlayStation party.
- In the Control Center’s Sound settings, check that Mute Game Voice Chat or Disable Game Chat Audio is off. The label can vary.
- Check the game’s own voice, channel, mute, and push-to-talk settings, then test PlayStation party chat and another game.
Identify which part of chat is failing
- You hear game audio but not players: Check the selected output device, headset chat volume, game voice volume, player mutes, game-chat mute, and whether you are in the game’s channel rather than a party.
- Players cannot hear you: Check mute controls, the selected input, microphone level, headset connection, and the game’s open-mic or push-to-talk setting. Account restrictions can also block communication.
- You can neither hear nor transmit: Check both devices, chat routing, the game’s voice settings, account permissions, and network or service conditions.
Fix a microphone that is not transmitting
Check the mute controls
On the DualSense, the mute button’s light indicates its state: lit means the microphone is muted, while blinking means the microphone and sound output are muted. Press the button to unmute. Check a headset’s inline switch, dedicated mute button, flip-up boom, detachable mic connection, battery, and wireless adapter as well. Sony’s PS5 support page covers the controller’s microphone and mute controls.
Confirm the input and microphone level
- Go to Settings > Sound > Microphone.
- Under Input Device, select the controller microphone, headset, USB microphone, or other intended compatible device.
- Choose Adjust Microphone Level and speak normally. The meter should react.
If the meter does not move, unmute the device, reseat its connection, and try the DualSense microphone. If the controller mic registers speech but the headset does not, the headset, cable, adapter, battery, or input selection is the likely area to investigate. A responsive meter only shows that the PS5 detects input; it does not prove the game is using that microphone. Games can have separate input choices, mute controls, voice-activation thresholds, and push-to-talk rules.
Fix chat audio you cannot hear
Select the intended output
Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and check Output Device. Select the headset, TV, or other device you want to hear through; if using a headset, also check Output to Headphones. A headset being plugged in or paired does not guarantee that the PS5 is sending sound to it.
Check chat volume, balance, and mutes
Check the game’s incoming voice volume and any headset chat-volume controls. If you can hear some players but not one person, check whether that player is muted or has a low individual volume, and confirm you are in the same channel. Switch between party chat and game chat
PlayStation party voice chat and a game’s voice chat are distinct channels. You can be talking to friends in a party while remaining unable to talk to teammates through the game, or vice versa.
- Press the PS button while the game is open.
- Open the active voice chat card.
- Use its chat selector and choose Game Voice Chat or Party Voice Chat, as appropriate.
Also check the Control Center’s Sound card. If Mute Game Voice Chat or Disable Game Chat Audio is enabled, turn it off to hear game chat. This control may mute game chat without muting a PlayStation party. Sony documents the channel selector and game-chat control in its PS5 party voice chat instructions.
Check the game’s own voice-chat settings
Games do not all handle voice chat the same way, and some do not include in-game voice chat. In the game’s audio, social, or communication settings, look for:

- Voice chat enabled, incoming voice volume, and microphone selection.
- Open mic versus push-to-talk, including the activation threshold or assigned control.
- Team, lobby, party, or proximity chat channel selection.
- Cross-platform communication and player-specific mute settings.
Chat may work in a lobby but not a match, or with PlayStation friends but not cross-platform teammates, if the game uses different channels or permissions. Check the game’s official support or status announcements if the problem began after an update or affects multiple players. Sony notes that in-game voice-chat availability and setup depend on the game in its party voice chat guide.
Use party chat and the microphone meter to narrow it down
To test PlayStation party chat, press the PS button, open Game Base, select the Parties tab, then start or join a party. You can use the DualSense’s built-in microphone without a headset. Compare the results with the microphone meter and, if possible, a second game.

If the PS5 meter detects your voice and party chat works, the microphone and basic console voice path are likely functioning; focus next on game settings and channel selection. If neither party chat nor the meter works with more than one microphone, investigate the console, account, or connection rather than buying a headset immediately.

Check account, privacy, and family restrictions
Privacy settings, age restrictions, and parental controls can limit communication. Review Settings > Family and Parental Controls and Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy, including communication and multiplayer permissions. A child account may be managed by a family manager and may not be able to change its own restriction. Sony’s PS5 support documentation explains parental controls, including chat restrictions.
A communication suspension is different from a faulty microphone: it can block party chat and other social features. Check for an on-screen notice and whether other social features are affected. Sony explains communication suspensions at PlayStation suspensions.

Network problems are more likely when voice chat drops, fails to connect, or works intermittently than when the microphone meter never responds. Check the PS5 connection status, try a wired connection if available, and restart the console and network equipment. Sony recommends turning off the PS5 and network device for about five minutes before restarting them when troubleshooting party-chat connection issues.

If connection symptoms persist, test another network where practical and contact your internet provider before changing router rules. NAT behavior varies by router, ISP, and game; a restrictive NAT can contribute to connection trouble but does not by itself prove the cause of a chat failure.
Sony lists these ports for PlayStation party voice-chat troubleshooting: TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480; UDP 3478, 3479. This guidance is for party-chat connection troubleshooting, not a guaranteed fix for every game’s voice channel. Do not forward ports as a first step; router changes require access and can be unnecessary. See Sony’s PlayStation Games Support guidance.
If multiple players or games are affected at once, check PlayStation service status and the game developer’s official status information. Without a current status check, an outage cannot be assumed. For error messages, consult Sony’s PS5 error-code support.
Reconnect devices, restart, and update
- Leave the game’s voice channel and any PlayStation party.
- Disconnect and reconnect the headset or USB adapter; toggle the mute control and confirm the selected input again.
- Close and relaunch the game, then restart the PS5.
- If the issue involves dropped connections, restart the modem or router as well.
- Install pending PS5 system and game updates, then test with the DualSense microphone.
Do not initialize the console or delete saved data for an ordinary voice-chat fault. If basic checks fail, use PlayStation Support’s troubleshooting guidance before considering disruptive recovery steps.

When to suspect faulty hardware or contact support
- If the DualSense microphone works but the headset microphone does not, test the headset on another compatible device or try another headset before replacing anything.
- If the headset works elsewhere but no PS5 microphone input registers, test another controller if available and consult PlayStation Support.
- If chat fails across multiple games and party chat, check account notices and network conditions; an error code can help identify the relevant support path.
- If only one game or one cross-platform channel fails, contact that game’s support after checking its voice settings and service announcements.
Do not buy a headset until tests isolate the current headset as the problem. If the DualSense microphone and party chat work, the cause is more likely game settings, chat routing, permissions, or a game-side issue.
Discord is a separate voice channel
PS5 Discord voice chat is distinct from PlayStation party chat and a game’s own voice system. Being in a Discord channel does not automatically place you in a game’s team or proximity chat. Check which channel you joined and its independent mute and volume controls. Sony’s PlayStation Games Support covers Discord voice chat on PS5.
