Why Did My FPS Drop to 30? Causes and Fixes

An exact 30-FPS lock often points to a cap, sync setting, or power profile. Learn how to tell it apart from a genuine performance bottleneck.

If your game suddenly sits at almost exactly 30 FPS, check for a frame-rate cap, synchronization setting, or power profile before assuming your PC is failing. A reading that varies around 30 in demanding scenes is more likely to point to a performance bottleneck. The quickest clues are whether the number is exact, whether every game is affected, and whether the problem began after a setting, update, or hardware change.

First, identify what “30 FPS” means in your game

A stable 30 and an average near 30 are different symptoms. Check the counter in a menu, a quiet area, and the scene where performance drops. If possible, repeat the same scene after changing just one setting.

  • Hard cap: FPS stays at or just under 30 even in light scenes. Look first for a game, driver, or platform limiter.
  • Synchronization behavior: FPS may step between refresh-related rates. With some traditional V-Sync implementations on a 60-Hz display, failure to sustain 60 FPS can result in half-refresh behavior around 30; this is not universal across games, drivers, APIs, or display modes. [AMD explains V-Sync](https://www.amd.com/en/resources/support-articles/faqs/dh3-012.html).
  • Performance loss: FPS rises in simple scenes and falls in busy ones. GPU or CPU load, heat, power, or memory pressure may be limiting performance.
  • Frame-time stutter: A counter can report 30 FPS while uneven frame delivery makes motion feel worse than a steady 30. Frame-time data helps distinguish this from a smooth cap.

A monitor’s refresh rate is how often it can update the image; it does not by itself make the GPU render at that rate. Windows lets you choose a supported refresh rate under Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.

Note whether the issue affects one game or all games, whether it occurs in menus as well as gameplay, whether lowering resolution changes it, and whether it began after an update, monitor change, or unplugging a laptop.

Run these checks before changing graphics quality

  1. Restart the game, then the PC or console if needed.
  2. In the affected game, look for Frame Rate Limit, Maximum FPS, or FPS Cap. Temporarily choose Uncapped or a limit above 30.
  3. Turn off in-game V-Sync for one test. Apply the change, fully restart the game, and repeat the same scene.
  4. Check the GPU driver’s per-game profile for a frame cap or synchronization override. A per-game setting can differ from the global profile.
  5. If the system uses AMD Radeon graphics, check Radeon Chill and Frame Rate Target Control as described below.
  6. On a laptop, connect the charger and check Battery Saver and the manufacturer’s performance profile.
  7. Confirm Windows is assigning the game to the intended GPU, then confirm the display is using its intended refresh rate.
  8. Compare with another game. If only one title is affected, focus on that game’s settings, files, mods, and recent patches.

If the change immediately lifts the game above 30, restore a sensible cap if desired. A cap can reduce heat and power use; leaving a game uncapped is not necessary. Change one setting at a time so the result tells you what mattered.

Check the game’s cap, V-Sync, and driver profile

Game settings and intentional 30-FPS modes

Menu names differ by title. Check for Frame Rate Limit, Maximum FPS, Refresh Rate, V-Sync, Dynamic Resolution, and Performance or Quality mode. Some games deliberately limit menus, cutscenes, photo modes, or quality-focused console modes to 30 FPS. A limit confined to one of those situations is not necessarily a system fault.

For a clean test, set the limit above 30 or to uncapped, disable V-Sync temporarily, apply the setting, and restart the game. If FPS rises, re-enable or adjust features individually to choose the trade-off you prefer.

Why V-Sync can coincide with 30 FPS

V-Sync synchronizes frame delivery with display timing to reduce tearing. Under some traditional synchronization setups, a system that cannot hold 60 FPS on a 60-Hz display can appear to fall to 30. Other games and configurations behave differently, and variable refresh rate (VRR) technologies such as FreeSync or G-SYNC can change the result.

  1. Disable V-Sync in the game for a diagnostic run.
  2. Temporarily turn off driver-level synchronization overrides.
  3. If supported, test exclusive fullscreen as well as the current window mode.
  4. If performance rises, decide whether reduced tearing, VRR, or a manual frame cap gives you the best experience. Disabling V-Sync can introduce tearing; it is not automatically the best permanent setting.

AMD Radeon Chill and Frame Rate Target Control

AMD documents Radeon Chill as a dynamic frame-rate control with separate minimum and maximum targets. Its minimum can be 30 FPS. On fixed-refresh displays, its documented automatic values can use half the display’s peak refresh rate as the minimum—for example, 30 FPS on a 60-Hz display. Chill can be set globally or per game, and the per-game profile overrides the global setting. See AMD’s Radeon Chill details.

  1. Open AMD Software and search for or open Graphics Settings.
  2. Check Global Graphics, then open the affected title under Games.
  3. Disable Radeon Chill temporarily, or raise its minimum and maximum targets; check both profiles.
  4. Check Frame Rate Target Control (FRTC) and any per-game profile. AMD describes FRTC as a maximum-FPS control, but supported hardware, APIs, and implementation details vary. Make changes outside the game and relaunch it for a fresh test. See AMD’s FRTC documentation.

These AMD controls apply only to compatible Radeon systems. NVIDIA and Intel users should check their own driver software for an equivalent per-game frame limit or override; the available labels and features vary.

Verify Windows refresh rate and GPU selection

Choose the intended refresh rate

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. Select the monitor the game uses if more than one is connected.
  3. Under Choose a refresh rate, select the intended supported rate.

The available rates depend on the monitor, connection, resolution, and configuration. Correcting an unintended 60-Hz selection to 144 Hz removes a display-side limitation, but it will not make a GPU render 144 FPS if it cannot do so. Microsoft also notes that Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate requires compatible hardware and a VRR display of at least 120 Hz, and that DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate of some games. If a game appears limited unexpectedly, test with DRR disabled. Details are in Microsoft’s refresh-rate guidance.

Make sure a laptop game uses the intended GPU

On supported Windows 11 systems, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add or select the game, choose Options, select High performance if appropriate, and save. Restart the game to test. Microsoft documents this per-app preference in its Windows 11 graphics settings guidance. The preference is not a guarantee of maximum GPU clocks; laptop firmware, hybrid-graphics switches, power limits, or the manufacturer’s control utility may take precedence.

For laptops, check power before changing graphics settings

  • Connect the original or correctly rated charger and test again.
  • Turn off Windows Battery Saver for the test.
  • In the laptop maker’s control utility, check for Quiet, Silent, Eco, Hybrid, or Performance/Turbo modes.
  • Confirm the game is using the discrete GPU if the laptop has one.
  • Compare performance on AC power and battery to see whether the power policy is involved.

Performance modes use more power and may increase heat and fan noise. If clocks drop as the laptop heats up, investigate cooling and the device’s manufacturer specifications rather than assuming one temperature threshold applies to every model.

Find out whether the game is GPU-, CPU-, heat-, or memory-limited

Observe the system while the slowdown is happening, not after returning to the desktop. Check GPU utilization and clock, CPU utilization by core, temperatures, system RAM, video memory (VRAM), and frame times. NVIDIA FrameView can display and record FPS, frame-time information, power, and related metrics; it is a measurement tool, not a fix. See the FrameView guide.

What you observe What it suggests Useful next test
GPU is near full utilization The rendering workload may be GPU-limited. Lower resolution or render scale, then test ray tracing, shadows, or volumetric effects one at a time. A meaningful FPS gain from lower resolution supports a GPU limit.
FPS is low but GPU utilization is unexpectedly low Consider a CPU limit, synchronization or cap, power state, wrong GPU, driver issue, background workload, or game-engine problem. Check per-core CPU use, caps, selected GPU, clocks, and whether another game behaves the same way.
One CPU core is saturated while total CPU use looks moderate The game may be limited by a heavily loaded thread. Test crowd density, simulation, view distance, and background processes; lowering resolution may have little effect.
CPU or GPU clocks fall as temperature rises Thermal throttling is possible; limits vary by model and firmware. Check cooling, airflow, fan behavior, and the manufacturer’s specifications. Look for the clock drop, not a universal temperature cutoff.
RAM or VRAM is nearly full Memory pressure can cause paging or asset-streaming stutter. Reduce texture quality or streaming budget, close unnecessary programs, and test again. More RAM helps only if capacity or paging is actually the constraint.
Only one game is affected A title-specific setting, patch, shader, mod, or engine issue is more likely. Compare another game and inspect the affected title’s files and configuration.
Every game is affected A system-wide power, driver, GPU-selection, display, or thermal issue becomes more likely. Check Windows and driver profiles, AC power, clocks, and display configuration.

Change graphics settings with a controlled test

If the measurements point to a real workload limit, lower settings selectively rather than turning everything down. GPU-heavy options commonly include resolution or render scale, ray tracing, shadows, volumetric lighting or fog, reflections, ambient occlusion, and anti-aliasing. CPU-heavy options can include crowd or NPC density, simulation, physics, view distance, traffic, and world detail. The balance varies by game.

Texture quality, high-resolution texture packs, mods, and texture-streaming budgets are more likely to affect memory use and stutter than average FPS alone. Shader compilation after a game or driver change can also cause temporary hitching in titles that rebuild shaders.

If the drop began after an update

Timing is a clue, not proof that Windows, a driver, or a game patch caused the problem. First find out whether other games are affected. Then check the game’s patch notes and known-issues page, verify its files through the launcher, temporarily disable mods and overlays, and allow any first-launch shader compilation to finish.

If the issue began immediately after a graphics-driver change and affects multiple games, consider rolling back to the previous known-stable driver or reinstalling an official vendor package. Reserve a clean driver installation for cases where an ordinary reinstall or rollback fails, and note the current version first. Avoid “FPS booster” utilities that make opaque system changes.

Console and handheld checks

On a console, check the game’s Quality, Performance, Resolution, or Frame Rate mode. Some titles intentionally target 30 FPS in a quality mode. Also check whether the console is in a power-saving, remote-play, streaming, or compatibility mode.

On a handheld PC, check its TDP or power limit, battery state, refresh rate, frame limiter, and manufacturer performance profile. PC driver-control-panel steps above do not apply to consoles.

When a hardware upgrade is justified

Do not buy a GPU because an FPS counter reads 30. A hard cap is normally a settings issue. A GPU upgrade is more plausible when utilization is consistently high, lower resolution or quality materially improves performance, temperatures and clocks are normal, and caps or synchronization have been ruled out. A CPU upgrade is more plausible when one or more CPU cores are saturated, GPU utilization stays low, and lowering resolution barely changes FPS. Additional RAM is relevant when measurements show memory exhaustion or paging, not as a universal FPS fix.

A higher-refresh-rate monitor changes what the display can show; it does not fix low rendered FPS. Frame generation may increase displayed frame counts in supported games, but it does not solve a 30-FPS render-time problem by itself and can add latency or artifacts.

If you need help diagnosing it

Include the game and version, CPU and GPU, whether it is a laptop or desktop, resolution and selected refresh rate, FPS before and after the drop, whether it is exactly capped or fluctuates, GPU and per-core CPU utilization, temperatures and clocks, and any recent game, driver, Windows, monitor, or power changes. That information can separate a limiter from a genuine performance bottleneck without guessing.
