What Headsets Are Compatible With PS5? Wired, Wireless and Bluetooth Explained

Most 3.5mm and many USB headsets work with PS5. Wireless models need a compatible transmitter, while ordinary Bluetooth headphones generally cannot connect directly.

PS5 works with most headsets that connect through a 3.5mm plug or compatible USB audio device, and with wireless headsets that use a PS5-compatible USB transmitter. Ordinary Bluetooth headphones generally cannot pair directly with the console. Sony’s PULSE Elite and PULSE Explore use PlayStation Link with the included USB adapter; PULSE 3D uses its own wireless USB adapter.

PS5 headset compatibility at a glance

Connection Will it work with PS5? Microphone and chat What to check
3.5mm through the DualSense Most analog headsets and headphones are supported. Usually, if the headset has a compatible microphone. For a mic, use a compatible four-pole TRRS plug; a headphone-only cable does not provide voice input.
USB wired Most USB headsets are supported, but not every model. Usually, if the PS5 recognizes the headset’s microphone. Check the exact model’s PS5 support; PC software-dependent features may not carry over.
Wireless with USB transmitter Yes, when the exact headset and transmitter support PS5. Usually, when the PlayStation version supports chat. Confirm the dongle is included and select PlayStation mode if the transmitter has a switch.
PlayStation Link Supported Link products work with their compatible adapter. Supported on compatible products. PULSE Elite and PULSE Explore use the PlayStation Link USB adapter.
Ordinary Bluetooth Not normally as a direct PS5 audio connection. Do not expect a Bluetooth headset microphone to work directly. Bluetooth support for phones does not mean PS5 support.

Sony says most USB and analog headsets are supported, but does not guarantee every third-party model. Check the PS5 FAQ and the headset maker’s compatibility information for the exact model.

Which kinds of headsets work?

3.5mm headsets and headphones

Plug a standard gaming headset into the headset jack on the DualSense controller. This is a straightforward wired option that avoids a separate wireless adapter and headset battery. Game audio should work with a compatible analog headset; voice chat also requires a working microphone and compatible plug wiring. Sony identifies the controller’s 3.5mm jack as a supported connection for audio devices in its PS5 FAQ.

Headphones without a microphone can play game audio, but you will need another microphone for voice chat. Some phone or laptop headsets may fit the jack yet have mic or inline-button limitations, so explicit PS5 support is the safer sign.

USB wired headsets

Connect a USB headset to the console and check whether the PS5 lists it as an output device. Many USB gaming headsets provide game audio and microphone input this way. However, a headset that works on a PC is not automatically fully functional on PS5: equalizers, RGB, sidetone, noise controls, and chat/game mixing may rely on manufacturer software or console-specific support.

If it is not detected, try a direct console USB port rather than a hub or interface. Also check whether the exact product is a PlayStation, Xbox, or PC variant; those versions can differ.

Wireless headsets with a USB transmitter

Many wireless PS5 headsets use a dedicated 2.4GHz USB transmitter rather than pairing with the console as Bluetooth audio. Compatibility depends on the exact headset and dongle—not just the brand or the word “wireless.” Confirm the model is labelled for PS5 or PlayStation, that the transmitter supports PS5 and is included, and that the microphone works on the console.

For example, Razer’s BlackShark V3 Pro for PlayStation uses its HyperSpeed wireless dongle for PS5 and also lists Bluetooth, USB, and 3.5mm connections. Its additional Bluetooth feature does not replace the USB transmitter for the PS5 connection.

PlayStation Link

Sony’s PlayStation Link wireless products include PULSE Elite and PULSE Explore. Both connect to PS5 through a PlayStation Link USB adapter; each product includes one, and Sony sells a separate adapter for compatible Link devices. The adapter is not a universal Bluetooth receiver. Sony’s adapter listing names PULSE Elite and PULSE Explore as compatible devices.

Which PlayStation headsets are compatible?

  • PULSE Elite: Connects to PS5 through the included PlayStation Link USB adapter. Sony also lists Bluetooth connectivity for compatible devices. See PlayStation accessory support.
  • PULSE Explore: Wireless earbuds that use PlayStation Link with the included adapter and also support Bluetooth for compatible devices. Sony’s technical guide identifies PlayStation Link and Bluetooth as communication systems.
  • PULSE 3D: Compatible with PS5 through its own wireless USB adapter. Do not assume it works with the newer PlayStation Link adapter; Sony’s Link listing names PULSE Elite and PULSE Explore. The PlayStation headset support page lists PULSE 3D among PlayStation wireless headsets.

For third-party products, PlayStation’s pairing and compatibility guidance directs owners to the headset manufacturer for model-specific details.

Do Bluetooth headphones work directly with PS5?

Generally, no. Sony’s PS5 FAQ says third-party Bluetooth wireless headsets are not supported as direct console audio devices. That includes many Bluetooth earbuds and headphones marketed for phones or computers. A product’s Bluetooth specification alone does not establish PS5 compatibility.

A separate Bluetooth transmitter connected through a compatible USB audio interface or television may pass sound to Bluetooth headphones, but that is a workaround—not native PS5 headset support. Depending on the transmitter and connection, you may get audio delay, no microphone input, missing headset controls, or extra cables. For gaming chat and low-latency sound, use a headset with a PS5-compatible USB transmitter or a supported PlayStation Link device.

How to connect a headset to PS5

3.5mm headset through the DualSense

  1. Plug the headset into the DualSense controller’s 3.5mm jack.
  2. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the headset if the PS5 has not done so automatically.
  3. Open Settings > Sound > Microphone, choose the headset microphone, and adjust its level.
  4. Check that the headset and controller are not muted, then test game audio and party chat.

USB wired or wireless-transmitter headset

  1. For a wired model, plug it into a PS5 USB port. For a wireless model, plug in its included USB transmitter and set it to PlayStation mode if it has a platform switch.
  2. Turn on the headset and allow it to connect to the transmitter.
  3. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and choose the headset if it is not selected automatically.
  4. Under Settings > Sound > Microphone, select the headset microphone and test voice input.

PULSE Elite or PULSE Explore

  1. Plug the included PlayStation Link USB adapter into the PS5.
  2. Turn on the PULSE Elite or open the PULSE Explore earbuds and complete pairing if prompted.
  3. Check Settings > Sound > Audio Output and Settings > Sound > Microphone if audio or input is not selected automatically.
  4. Install system or accessory updates if the console prompts you.

What to check before buying

  • Exact console version: Headset families may have separate PlayStation and Xbox versions. Verify the model name and transmitter, not just the product family.
  • Microphone support: Confirm that the listing promises PS5 voice chat, rather than only audio output.
  • Included transmitter: Wireless models may require a particular dongle; some accessories are sold separately.
  • Features beyond basic sound: Chat/game balance, mute controls, sidetone, EQ, and firmware utilities may not all work on console.
  • Phone audio at the same time: If you want PS5 and phone audio together, look for explicit simultaneous or dual-wireless support. Bluetooth support by itself does not promise simultaneous audio.
  • PlayStation Portal use: Portal has different wireless limitations from PS5. Sony says Portal supports PlayStation Link devices and headsets connected through its 3.5mm jack; a third-party headset that works wirelessly with PS5 may not work wirelessly with Portal. See Sony’s accessory support page.

If you already own a headset, try its 3.5mm connection or USB connection first, then verify the exact wireless transmitter. If you are buying, a wired 3.5mm model is a simple choice; a clearly labelled PS5 wireless model with its adapter is the safer wireless choice. Sony’s official headset range is listed at PlayStation Direct.

Does a compatible headset support PS5 3D Audio?

PS5 Tempest 3D AudioTech is not limited to Sony-branded headsets. The headset needs to receive audio through a supported analog or USB connection; the game must also support 3D Audio. Sony’s PULSE 3D manual describes 3D Audio support for PS5 games that include it: PULSE 3D instruction manual. A particular headset does not unlock the feature or guarantee that every game will sound the same.

Troubleshoot a PS5 headset that is not working

No audio or the headset is not detected

  • Check Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the intended device.
  • Reconnect the USB cable or transmitter directly to a console port; try another port if needed.
  • For wireless models, confirm the transmitter is in PlayStation mode and the headset is paired, powered on, and not still connected to another device.
  • Power-cycle the headset. Sony also recommends checking that it is charged and that its USB adapter is firmly connected.
  • Update firmware with the manufacturer’s approved PC or mobile utility if the model requires it.

Game audio works, but the microphone does not

  • Choose the headset microphone under Settings > Sound > Microphone.
  • Check the headset’s mute switch and the controller mute button.
  • For 3.5mm headsets, push the plug fully into the jack and verify that the cable has a compatible microphone connection.
  • Confirm that the exact headset and transmitter variant support PlayStation voice chat.

Headset works on PC but not PS5

The transmitter may be PC-only, the headset may be an Xbox variant, or the device may depend on PC software for routing or controls. A USB connection that carries sound on a computer does not establish full console compatibility.

Audio is delayed or chat controls are missing

For gaming, use the model’s PS5-compatible 2.4GHz transmitter or PlayStation Link connection rather than generic Bluetooth. Basic audio and microphone support also do not guarantee that every headset’s chat/game wheel or other manufacturer controls will function on PS5.
