Microsoft Solitaire, First Bundled With Windows 3.0 in 1990, Entered the World Video Game Hall of Fame in 2019

Microsoft Solitaire was inducted into The Strong National Museum of Play’s World Video Game Hall of Fame as part of the 2019 class. The honor recognized the Windows game’s reach and cultural influence—not the invention of the centuries-old card game, and not a claim that Solitaire was the most technically complex game of its era.

First bundled with Windows 3.0 in 1990, the familiar Klondike game reached people who might never have bought a video game. Its place in a computer operating system also gave players an easy, enjoyable way to practice using a mouse.

What was inducted, and when?

The inductee is generally called Microsoft Solitaire or Windows Solitaire: Microsoft’s Windows version of Klondike, rather than every solitaire game available on Windows. The Strong lists it as a 2019 inductee in the World Video Game Hall of Fame, which is operated by The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York.

Microsoft announced the induction on May 2, 2019. Solitaire joined Colossal Cave Adventure, Mortal Kombat, and Super Mario Kart in that year’s class, according to Microsoft’s announcement.

The game first arrived with Windows 3.0 in 1990. Microsoft identifies May 22, 1990, as its Windows debut date in its Windows Experience Blog.

Why did a card game qualify?

The Strong assesses games for influence, longevity, geographical reach, and icon status. Solitaire’s case rests less on technical novelty than on what happened when a familiar game was distributed as part of software millions of people already used.

  • Familiar rules lowered the barrier. Players did not need gaming experience, specialized hardware, or quick reflexes to begin.
  • Bundling created unusual reach. A game that came with Windows did not depend on a player discovering and buying a separate retail title.
  • Short sessions suited ordinary computer use. A hand could fit into a brief break at home or at work.
  • It helped broaden the idea of who played games. The Strong presents Solitaire as an example of a game that reached people beyond traditional enthusiast audiences and helped establish the importance of casual games.

Solitaire did not invent casual gaming or single-handedly create its industry. The museum’s argument is that its accessibility and distribution made it a particularly influential early example.

How Solitaire made mouse use feel natural

In Klondike, players click cards and drag them between tableau columns and foundation piles. That turns mouse movement, clicking, and dragging into purposeful actions with an immediate, visible result.

Microsoft said the game had been created partly to teach users how to use a mouse. That makes it fair to say Solitaire helped people practice graphical computer interaction; it would overstate the evidence to call it a formal training program or claim that it taught every Windows user. Microsoft’s account of the rationale appears in its 2019 announcement.

Who made the Windows version?

The Strong credits Wes Cherry, then a Microsoft intern, with programming the game, and Susan Kare with designing its card deck artwork. These are the credits given in the museum’s inductee record.

Microsoft did not invent Solitaire itself. The Hall of Fame recognition concerns its digital Windows implementation, distribution, and cultural effects—not authorship of the underlying card game.

How many people did it reach?

Microsoft reported in 2019 that Solitaire had reached more than 500 million players over its first 29 years, and said it had been distributed on more than one billion computers. The Strong separately says it was likely installed on more than a billion computers. Those figures describe different things: players are not the same measure as computers or installations, and the player total is Microsoft’s reported figure rather than an independently audited count. Microsoft’s figures are in its 2019 announcement; the museum’s account is on its inductee page.

Microsoft also said in 2019 that the game had been offered in 65 languages and more than 200 markets. Together with its distribution through Windows, those numbers help explain the Hall of Fame’s emphasis on geographical reach.

Was Solitaire included with every version of Windows?

Not without qualification. The Strong’s history says Microsoft distributed Solitaire with Windows from its 1990 debut through Windows 8.1 in 2013. After that, it became a downloadable title rather than a program bundled in the same way. That distinction matters: “Windows Solitaire” can refer to the original bundled experience, while later versions are separate releases and successors.

An early version also had a proposed “Boss Key” that could display a fake spreadsheet to disguise game-playing at work. The Strong says Microsoft removed the feature before release. It is a memorable footnote, not the reason the game became historically significant.

How the original relates to Microsoft Solitaire Collection

Microsoft Solitaire Collection is a later, expanded product, not the exact original Windows release inducted in 2019. Microsoft describes the collection as including Klondike, Spider, FreeCell, TriPeaks, and Pyramid, alongside features such as challenges and progression. Its 2020 history also describes access across Windows, mobile platforms, and the web; availability and interfaces can vary over time and by platform. See Microsoft’s 30th-anniversary account.

The collection carries the name and legacy forward, but it should not be treated as though all of its modes were part of the 1990 game or individually inducted. The Hall of Fame subject is the longer-running Windows Solitaire phenomenon.

What the induction does—and does not—mean

Hall of Fame status is a judgment of historical significance, not a ranking that declares Solitaire the “best” game. A traditional card game can belong in a video-game museum because its digital distribution changed who encountered computer games and how they interacted with computers. In this case, a simple game’s platform reach was central to its influence.
