Yes—Electronic Arts shut down Origin as a supported desktop app in 2025 and replaced it with the EA app on PC and Mac. If you bought games through Origin, install the EA app and sign in with the same EA Account; EA says purchases tied to that account can be accessed there, so the launcher change alone does not mean you must buy them again.
When did Origin close?
EA’s archived support information gives April 17, 2025 as the Origin shutdown date. The clearest dated notice is specifically about Origin for Mac, so that date should not be treated as a confirmed universal cutoff for every platform, region, or service endpoint. EA’s current materials confirm the completed transition: Origin is no longer the supported Windows desktop client, and the EA app is its replacement on PC and Mac. Why did EA replace Origin?
The documented reasons are platform-specific. EA’s Mac notice attributed the change to Apple ending support for 32-bit software. The current EA app, meanwhile, requires a 64-bit Windows PC and supports Windows 10 or 11; EA’s stated requirements do not support 32-bit Windows. EA now directs PC and Mac users to the EA app rather than maintaining Origin as a separate supported desktop client. The requirements can change, so check EA’s current EA app installation and system requirements before installing.
What happened to games bought through Origin?
EA says Origin purchases are linked to an EA Account. Sign in to the EA app with the account you used in Origin, then check your library for games to download or launch. You should not need to repurchase an eligible game solely because Origin closed. EA’s EA app download and migration guidance explains the account-based access.

Ownership and ongoing playability are separate questions. A title may be associated with your account but have its own download, operating-system compatibility, publisher-support, or online-service limitation. EA Play catalog removals also do not, by themselves, mean that a separately purchased copy has been removed from an account; EA’s service and game updates describe changes to subscription availability.
How to move from Origin to the EA app
- Open EA’s official EA app page and choose the Windows PC or Mac download.
- Install the app. The current listed minimums are a 64-bit PC running Windows 10 or 11, or a Mac running macOS 10.15.8 or later.
- Sign in with the EA Account previously used with Origin.
- Open your library and find the games associated with that account. Download or launch the titles you want to play.
If you are keeping old local game files or saves, make a backup before uninstalling or changing software. The EA app does not make an unsupported operating system compatible, and migration does not guarantee every historical title will run on a current system.

Do Steam and Epic users need the EA app?
Sometimes, yes. EA says relevant EA PC games launched through Steam or Epic may require the EA app for access and launching. A Steam or Epic purchase and an EA Account are distinct: the storefront records the purchase, while EA’s client may still handle authentication or launch. Check the requirements for the particular game rather than assuming another storefront removes the EA app dependency. EA describes this on its EA app page.
What if the EA app will not install or a game is missing?
If installation fails
- Check that Windows is 64-bit and version 10 or 11, or that your Mac runs macOS 10.15.8 or later, as listed in EA’s current requirements.
- Restart the computer and close Origin if it is still running in the background.
- Download a fresh installer from EA’s official page rather than using an archived installer.
- If security software blocks installation or launch, check its firewall or antivirus rules for
EADesktop.exe,EALauncher.exe, andEABackgroundService.exe. EA lists these files in its installation guidance. - Temporarily check whether a VPN, virtual network adapter, or network problem is interfering with authentication. Check EA server status if sign-in or online services are unavailable.
EA also identifies missing Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables and a corrupted installer among possible installation problems. Its EA app troubleshooting guide covers error codes and recovery steps. If Origin shows EC:20-403 on Windows, EA says Origin is no longer available for Windows and directs users to install the EA app.

If a purchased game is not in your library
- Confirm you signed in to the same EA Account used for the purchase; signing out and back in can refresh the library.
- Check library filters and hidden items.
- Confirm whether the game was bought under another EA Account or directly through a third-party store.
- Check EA server status, then contact EA support with purchase details if the title is still missing.
Can you keep using Origin or play every old Origin game?
EA’s supported desktop path is the EA app; unofficial archived installers, modified launchers, or community workarounds are not equivalent to an EA-supported solution and may create security, authentication, or compatibility risks. Separately, an account-linked purchase does not promise that every old game remains downloadable, compatible with your operating system, or connected to working online services. Some titles were supported by their original publishers; EA’s third-party game support information explains that distinction.
