The old “Edge for Gamers” label referred to a bundle of gaming-focused Edge settings tested in 2022; it is not a universal switch in current Microsoft Edge. Today, the closest feature for using web content while you play is Microsoft Edge Game Assist, also presented as Edge for Game Bar. It opens through Windows Game Bar, can show guides and other web content over a game, and does not directly increase frame rates.
What “Edge for Gamers” did
Microsoft introduced “Edge for Gamers” as a gaming-oriented mode in testing around 2022. It bundled or surfaced customization and browser features such as gaming themes, a gaming homepage, gaming-related sidebar apps, dark-mode personalization, and Edge’s Efficiency mode for PC gaming. The exact controls varied by Edge channel and version, so instructions in older articles may not match the current Stable browser.
That older bundle should not be confused with a dedicated browser edition or a Windows performance mode. Microsoft’s current gaming pages focus instead on Game Assist and Edge for Game Bar, along with separate features such as Clarity Boost for Xbox Cloud Gaming. Microsoft’s 2022 announcement, contemporary coverage of the test, and coverage of the bundled mode describe the earlier version.
The current equivalent: Edge Game Assist
Game Assist is an Edge-based widget in Windows Game Bar. It can sit over a PC game so you can consult web pages, videos, walkthroughs, or services such as Discord, Twitch, and Spotify without switching to a separate desktop window. For titles in Microsoft’s enhanced-games catalog, it can also suggest game-specific tips and guides. The catalog is selective and changes over time; Microsoft’s enhanced-games list shows its current coverage. Games outside that list can still use Game Assist as an in-game browser.

Game Assist is optimized for gaming rather than being a full copy of the desktop Edge interface. It shares relevant data with the selected desktop Edge profile, including favorites, history, cookies, and form fills, but desktop tabs do not automatically appear in the widget. Check which Edge profile is selected, particularly on a shared PC. Game Assist is built on Edge and does not require Edge to be your default browser, but it is not compatible with other browser engines. Its interface is optimized for keyboard and mouse; Microsoft says controller support is still being refined. Details and feature availability are documented in Microsoft’s Game Assist FAQ.
How to enable Game Assist
Microsoft documents Game Assist for Windows 11 version 22H2 or later with current updates. The included experience requires Edge version 137 or later, plus current Windows and Game Bar updates. Microsoft also says it can be installed manually through Edge settings on Windows 11.
- Update Microsoft Edge, Windows 11, and Xbox Game Bar using the available browser, Windows Update, and Microsoft Store updates.
- Open Edge, select Settings and more (…), then search Settings for Game Assist. Install or enable it if the option is offered and it is not already available.
- Launch a PC game and press Windows key + G to open Game Bar.
- Select Game Assist. If the widget does not identify the game, enter its name. Microsoft says Ctrl+G or the right-click Paste game title command can insert the title.
- Select the widget’s Pin icon if you want it to remain visible over the game while Game Bar is closed.
Game Bar is a Windows component, not an Edge setting. If Win+G does nothing, check that Xbox Game Bar is installed and enabled in Windows Gaming settings, verify that the shortcut has not been changed, and check whether organizational policy blocks it.

Other Edge gaming features—and what they change
Gaming themes, homepage, and sidebar
Themes, gaming-oriented homepage content, and sidebar apps are customization and quick-access options, not game-performance controls. Their labels and availability can vary by Edge build and market. Microsoft’s Edge gaming features page describes the current offering.

Clarity Boost for Xbox Cloud Gaming
Clarity Boost is a client-side spatial upscaling feature for games streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming in Edge. It can make the streamed image appear sharper; it does not improve a local game’s rendering performance, raise its frame rate, or improve the network connection. Availability and behavior may vary by device, browser version, and market. Microsoft describes it on its gaming features page and in its 2022 announcement.
Energy saver, formerly Efficiency mode
Energy saver is intended to reduce Edge’s power use, not to maximize gaming performance. It can reduce browser activity and, in some circumstances, make pages slower or video less smooth. If a browser-based game or cloud-gaming service is affected, Microsoft recommends keeping that site active:

- In Edge, select Settings and more (…) > Settings.
- Select System and performance.
- Under Always keep these sites active, select Add site.
- Enter the full address of the game or streaming service and select Add.
See Microsoft’s explanation of Edge performance features for details. Do not enable Energy saver on the assumption that it will boost game frame rates.
Does Edge’s gaming mode increase FPS?
No direct frame-rate increase is established for Game Assist. Its main benefit is convenient access to guides, videos, and services while a game runs. Microsoft says the feature is optimized for gaming, but any running application uses system resources; the effect on a particular PC depends on what else is running and the system’s available headroom.
Game Assist is separate from Windows Game Mode, graphics-driver controls, and in-game graphics settings. If you want to diagnose a slowdown, compare play with and without the widget, close unneeded tabs or sidebar apps, and review Energy saver settings for browser-based games. Treat Windows Game Mode, GPU drivers, and graphics options as separate troubleshooting areas rather than settings controlled by Edge.

When Game Assist is useful
| Situation | What to consider |
|---|---|
| You regularly check walkthroughs or guides | Game Assist can keep web content within reach; tailored tips depend on whether the title is in Microsoft’s enhanced-games catalog. |
| You want chat, music, or a stream accessible while playing | The widget can open services such as Discord, Twitch, and Spotify, but these still use system resources. |
| You play competitively or rely on anti-cheat software | An overlay may be distracting or conflict with a particular game. Test it before relying on it during a match. |
| Your PC is low on memory or already heavily loaded | Close the widget and compare performance; the overlay is another running application. |
| You prefer strict separation from desktop browsing | Game Assist shares data with the selected Edge profile, so consider whether that profile is appropriate before using it. |
| You play with a controller only | The interface is optimized for keyboard and mouse, and controller support is still being refined. |
| You use Windows 10 | Current Game Assist requirements are documented for Windows 11, not as a general Windows 10 feature. |
| You only need recording, screenshots, or performance widgets | Use Windows Game Bar without opening Game Assist; Edge is not required for those Game Bar functions. |
Troubleshooting common problems
The “Edge for Gamers” switch is missing
The old bundled mode may no longer be exposed in your Edge build. Update Edge and Windows, then search Edge Settings for Game Assist and try Win+G while a game is running. If it remains unavailable, your build may not offer the old switch or an administrator may have restricted the feature.
Game Assist opens but has no game-specific guides
Game-specific guidance is limited to supported titles and can depend on whether the game is identified correctly. Enter its name with Ctrl+G or use Paste game title. You can still browse manually if tailored guides are unavailable.
The widget stays over the game
A pinned widget can remain visible after Game Bar closes. Reopen it with Win+G or move the pointer to the top of the widget to reveal its title bar, then select Unpin beside Close. You can also close Game Assist from its Settings and more (…) menu.

Performance feels worse
Close or unpin Game Assist, remove unnecessary sidebar apps and tabs, and check whether Energy saver is affecting a browser game or stream. Compare the game with and without the overlay rather than assuming the feature improves performance. Microsoft notes that Energy saver can cause slowdowns or less-smooth video in some cases.
An extension does not work as expected
Some extensions work in Game Assist, especially those that run automatically on pages or provide context-menu and form-filling controls, but not every desktop Edge extension function is available in the gaming interface. Install and manage extensions in desktop Edge.
How to close or remove Game Assist
To stop using it during a session, unpin the widget and close it from Game Bar or its menu. Microsoft says Game Assist can be uninstalled through Windows Settings and reinstalled through Edge Settings; consult the Game Assist FAQ for the current steps. You can continue using Game Bar’s other functions without opening the Edge widget.
Quick Recap
Alternatives for an in-game companion
- Steam Overlay: A convenient option for Steam games and Steam-linked features such as chat, screenshots, and guides.
- Discord overlay: Useful for voice and chat, but not a general-purpose browser.
- NVIDIA, AMD, or Xbox overlays: Consider these for platform-specific controls, recording, or performance information rather than web browsing.
- A second monitor or desktop browser: Keeps guides, streams, and chat separate from the game window, without relying on an overlay.
