Why SSD Prices Are Rising: AI Demand, NAND Forecasts, and What NVMe Buyers Should Know

AI infrastructure is strengthening enterprise SSD demand, while consumer SSD demand remains weak. Learn what the 4Q26 NAND forecast says—and why it is not a retail price prediction for every NVMe drive.

SSD prices are under upward pressure, but the evidence does not show that every major consumer NVMe drive has risen by the same amount—or prove how far a particular model is above its previous low. TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 forecast calls for NAND Flash contract prices to rise 15–20% quarter over quarter in 4Q26. That is a forecast for upstream contract prices, not a prediction that retail NVMe prices will rise 15–20%.

Why are SSD prices going up?

The clearest pressure is in NAND Flash, the memory used in SSDs. TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 outlook forecasts a 15–20% quarter-over-quarter increase in NAND Flash contract prices in 4Q26. Contract prices are negotiated upstream between suppliers and customers; they are not the same as the price a shopper sees for a finished drive.

AI infrastructure is contributing to stronger demand for enterprise SSDs. TrendForce links that demand to cloud service providers expanding AI inference systems and to data-intensive retrieval, caching, and vector-database workloads. The firm forecasts enterprise SSD bit demand to grow more than 80% year over year in 2026, and says much of the incremental supply is already committed. It expects enterprise SSD price growth to accelerate in 4Q26. These are market forecasts, not final results for the quarter. TrendForce’s 4Q26 memory contract-price outlook

That does not mean AI data centers are consuming every consumer SSD or that all NVMe drives face the same shortage. NAND demand and pricing differ by product segment, and the available evidence points to a split between stronger enterprise demand and weaker consumer demand.

Why AI demand does not translate evenly into consumer NVMe prices

Market What the evidence says What that means for interpreting prices
Enterprise SSDs TrendForce forecasts enterprise SSD bit demand growth of more than 80% year over year in 2026, with much incremental supply committed and faster enterprise SSD price growth in 4Q26. This is the segment with the clearest direct AI-infrastructure demand pressure; it is not a retail forecast for every consumer drive.
PC-client and consumer SSDs TrendForce describes weak consumer demand and says elevated upstream costs are difficult for retail-channel buyers and NAND module makers to pass through. Upstream price pressure can coexist with buyer resistance, negotiation, and different retail outcomes by model and channel.
NAND contract prices The 15–20% increase is TrendForce’s forecast for overall NAND Flash contract prices in 4Q26. It should not be quoted as the predicted increase in consumer NVMe street prices.

PC makers’ purchasing behavior is one reason the consumer market may respond differently. TrendForce reported in July 2026 that PC OEMs had built client SSD inventories aggressively during the first half of the year. With inventory on hand, buyers were less willing to accept further increases; suppliers responded with more flexible pricing and longer negotiations, which TrendForce expected to moderate contract-price increases. Its later September outlook still characterized consumer demand as weak and downstream buyers as cautious. TrendForce’s July 2026 client SSD outlook

What the available price examples do—and do not—show

TrendForce’s SSD street-price tracker, last updated September 24, 2026, lists examples across several form factors and generations. The displayed currency is not specified in the source excerpt, so these figures should not be treated as U.S.-dollar prices or as verified quotes from a particular retailer.

Drive listed by TrendForce Interface Capacity Displayed tracker average
Samsung 990 Pro PCIe 4.0 x4 1TB 239.99
PNY CS2150 PCIe 5.0 x4 2TB 380.00
Silicon Power US75 PCIe 4.0 x4 1TB 189.97
ADATA Ultimate SU650 SATA 960GB 178.97

These are dated entries from a tracker, not a matched comparison of like-for-like NVMe drives and not evidence of how much each model has risen from its own historical low. The Samsung and Silicon Power examples are PCIe 4.0 drives; the PNY is PCIe 5.0; the ADATA is SATA, so it is not an NVMe drive. TrendForce says its street-price collection and displayed content changed beginning in January 2026, which further complicates comparisons with older tracker figures. The same page also lists 3Q26 PC-client OEM contract-price averages for M.2 TLC PCIe value-grade drives: 321.00 for 1TB, 201.13 for 512GB, and 128.38 for 256GB. TrendForce labels these as OEM contract prices, not consumer street prices; the displayed currency is not established in the page excerpt, and the section was last updated August 5, 2026. They should not be compared directly with retail listings.

Retail snapshots can look dramatic without representing the whole market. A July 2026 Tom’s Hardware article described volatile SSD listings and cautioned that identifying a reasonable price could be difficult. Those examples are useful as dated listings, not as a representative market index or proof that all drives rose by the same percentage. Tom’s Hardware’s July 2026 SSD pricing examples

How much have consumer SSD prices increased?

The evidence here does not establish one reliable percentage increase for consumer NVMe drives as a class. It provides a forecast for NAND contract prices, separate forecasts and observations about enterprise SSDs, dated street-price examples, and OEM contract-price figures. Those measures cover different products, buyers, and points in the supply chain; combining them into a single retail increase would be misleading.

Silicon Motion vice president Nelson Duann told Tom’s Hardware in a June 2026 interview, “The retail SSD market has almost disappeared.” In context, he was describing controllers sold to module makers ending up in drives shipped to PC OEMs, as OEMs increasingly sourced SSDs from module makers amid difficulty obtaining enough NAND directly from memory manufacturers. This is an executive’s characterization of supply channels, not a measured statistic showing that retail sales have literally ceased. Tom’s Hardware’s interview with Nelson Duann

Should you buy an NVMe SSD now or wait?

The market forecasts do not settle the next retail price move for a specific drive, and the dated tracker entries do not establish whether a current listing beats its historical low. A decision is more useful when based on the drive you need, its compatibility, and the price available from a retailer you can actually buy from.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Check fit first. Confirm your system supports the drive’s physical format and interface. An M.2 slot does not by itself guarantee support for every M.2 NVMe drive; check the motherboard, laptop, or console specifications, supported PCIe generation, and any capacity or heatsink constraints.
  • Compare equivalent drives. Match capacity and interface—such as 1TB PCIe 4.0 against another 1TB PCIe 4.0 model—rather than comparing unlike capacities or treating PCIe 5.0 and SATA products as interchangeable.
  • Use a dated, local retail price. Check the named retailer, region, currency, and date. A market tracker average or OEM contract price is not a live quote for your shopping location.
  • Buy against a real need, not a market headline. If you need capacity or a replacement now, evaluate the current compatible option on its merits. If the purchase is optional, the forecast alone is not enough to show whether waiting will produce a lower price.
