The invitations and screenshots suggested an invite-based preview, not an open beta for every console owner. Sony later confirmed the feature and began rolling it out to PlayStation Plus Premium members in October 2023. Cloud streaming is now an established Premium benefit, though supported games and devices vary by region.
What PS5 owners reported in August 2023
On August 7, 2023, users reported invitations to download PS5 system-software beta software that included a “PS5 game cloud streaming preview,” or similar wording. The initial evidence was user accounts and screenshots reported by Android Headlines, rather than a detailed Sony announcement explaining the test.
The reports pointed to selected-user access. They did not establish how many people were invited, that anyone could sign up, or that every PlayStation Plus Premium subscriber qualified. Some coverage suggested Premium membership might have been required or affected eligibility, but that detail was not confirmed in the reported evidence.
Capabilities and games reportedly seen
According to the user reports, the preview offered 720p, 1080p, 1440p and 2160p output options. Testers also said streamed games could load cloud-synchronized saves, and screenshots appeared to show launch options on PS5 game pages or activity cards.

Games mentioned in reports included God of War Ragnarök, Destiny 2, Returnal, Fall Guys, Fortnite, Demon’s Souls and Death Stranding. Those names describe titles reportedly visible during testing, not a definitive catalog or a guarantee that each game was available to every tester, in every region.
Why native PS5 game streaming mattered
PlayStation had offered game streaming before, but the reported preview focused on streaming supported PS5 games—not just older PlayStation titles or PS4-era content. In cloud streaming, Sony’s remote servers run the game and send the video and audio to the player. That can let someone start an eligible game without first downloading its full installation to a console.

The potential benefit is less waiting and less local storage use, particularly when trying a Game Catalog or Game Trial title. It is not the same as owning every game in a subscription catalog, nor does it make every purchased PS5 game streamable. Availability depends on the supported title and the applicable account, plan and region.
How the preview led to the official rollout
Sony’s announcement on October 11, 2023 confirmed that cloud streaming would be a PlayStation Plus Premium feature. It covered supported PS5 games in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, Game Trials, and supported digital PS5 games owned by Premium members. Sony said hundreds of PS5 titles were planned, naming examples such as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, Hogwarts Legacy, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Resident Evil 4, Dead Island 2, Genshin Impact, Fall Guys and Fortnite. See Sony’s launch announcement for the launch-era details.

The rollout was phased by region:
| Region | Launch date |
|---|---|
| Japan | October 17, 2023 |
| Europe | October 23, 2023 |
| North America | October 30, 2023 |
Sony published the regional dates in its October 16 launch update and FAQ. The August invitations were therefore an early test of a feature that subsequently became a commercial service, not the date of its public launch.
What the 2023 launch required—and what it excluded
At launch, cloud streaming required PlayStation Plus Premium and was available on PS5 consoles. The service covered supported digital games; a PS5 disc license did not by itself make a game eligible to stream. Sony’s launch FAQ also excluded PS VR2 games. Game Catalog titles and Trials were subject to their availability, while streaming an owned title required that it be among the supported digital games.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
Sony said supported add-ons and DLC could be purchased and used in streamed PS5 games, but that does not establish compatibility for every add-on or region. Cloud save storage and cloud streaming are also separate services: cloud storage holds save data, while streaming runs the game remotely. A streamed game may use account-synchronized progress where supported, but the August testers’ save observations should not be read as a universal guarantee for every title.

| Cloud streaming | Remote Play | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | Sony’s servers | The user’s PS5 |
| Must the game be installed on the PS5? | No, for eligible cloud-streamed titles | Yes |
| Must the user’s PS5 be available? | Not necessarily | Yes; it must be powered on or in Rest Mode and connected |
| Typical use | Play supported titles without a local download | Access games installed on your own console from another device |
| PlayStation Portal at the October 2023 launch | Not supported | Supported through Remote Play |
Remote Play cannot be used to relay a game that is itself being cloud-streamed. The Portal limitation in that table is specifically historical: Sony’s October 2023 FAQ said the device did not support PS5 cloud streaming at launch. Sony’s current documentation discusses cloud streaming on Portal, a later change; the current service description is on PlayStation’s Plus games page. Current support remains subject to title, account and regional eligibility.
Image quality and connection requirements
Sony announced 720p, 1080p, 1440p and 2160p (4K) options, up to 60 frames per second, with SDR or HDR output, 5.1 and 7.1 audio, and Tempest 3D AudioTech. These were announced service capabilities, not a guarantee that every game, display or connection would receive every option.
Sony’s October 2023 launch materials gave a minimum of 5 Mbps to establish a streaming session. They also listed recommended bandwidth figures by resolution:
| Resolution | Sony’s recommended bandwidth at launch |
|---|---|
| 720p | 13 Mbps |
| 1080p | 23 Mbps |
| 1440p | 38 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 52 Mbps |
These are Sony’s published minimum and recommended figures, not performance guarantees. A fast connection can still feel poor if latency is high, Wi-Fi is unstable, packets are lost, household traffic is congested, or the service is under load. Bandwidth alone does not predict responsiveness or image quality.
What the August report means now
The careful description is that Sony appeared to test PS5 cloud streaming with selected users in a system-software beta in August 2023. “Public beta” in early coverage should not be taken to mean an open test anyone could join. Sony’s October rollout confirmed the underlying feature, while its current PlayStation pages describe cloud streaming as a Premium benefit with support beyond the original PS5-only launch; availability varies by title and region. See Sony’s current PS5 cloud-streaming page and current PlayStation Plus game information for present service details.
