Microsoft announced its fourth Xbox Developer_Direct on January 8, 2026, and the broadcast aired on January 22. It was billed around Fable, Forza Horizon 6 and Beast of Reincarnation; Double Fine’s Kiln was a surprise fourth reveal. The event has passed, and one headline date has changed: Microsoft’s current Fable page lists February 23, 2027, replacing the autumn 2026 window given in the event recap.
What Microsoft announced before the show
Xbox Wire announced the Developer_Direct on January 8, 2026. The developer-led broadcast was scheduled for January 22 at 10 a.m. Pacific, 1 p.m. Eastern and 6 p.m. in the UK. It was part of Xbox’s 25th-anniversary year, with developers presenting gameplay and insights into their studios and games rather than a general Xbox showcase.
The three announced focus games were Fable, Forza Horizon 6 and Game Freak’s Beast of Reincarnation. The finished program also included Kiln, which Xbox had not named in the advance announcement. Xbox Wire’s announcement and its January 22 recap distinguish the planned lineup from what viewers ultimately saw.
What the completed Developer_Direct showed
The recap covered four games, with different kinds of reveals: an extended look at Fable, first gameplay for Forza Horizon 6, a deeper introduction to Beast of Reincarnation, and the surprise announcement of Kiln.

Fable: Albion, choices and a new beginning
Playground Games described Fable as a new beginning for the franchise: an open-world action RPG set in Albion. The presentation covered character customization, combat, new and returning enemies, the game’s population of living NPCs, and a morality system built around choice and consequence. Its tone retains British humor and moral absurdity. “New beginning” is more precise than calling it a remake of any one earlier game.
The Developer_Direct recap listed Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud, Steam and PlayStation 5, as well as Xbox Play Anywhere and Game Pass Ultimate. It originally gave the release window as autumn 2026. Microsoft’s current official Fable page now lists February 23, 2027; that is the current date to use, not the superseded event window.

Forza Horizon 6: first gameplay in Japan
Playground Games showed the first gameplay from Forza Horizon 6, set in Japan. Xbox’s recap described its map as the largest and densest in the series to that point, spanning Tokyo and rural environments with multiple biomes, vertical routes and seasonal changes. The showcase also highlighted Japanese car culture, more than 550 cars at launch, customizable garages, the Estate, Drag Meets and Horizon Time Attack Circuits.
The recap announced May 19, 2026, as the release date. Microsoft’s current game page describes Tokyo as the series’ largest city and also lists Touge Battles, Aftermarket Cars, co-op, Car Meets and CoLab, an upgraded EventLab-style creation tool with multiplayer support. The game is listed for Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11, with Xbox Play Anywhere. The Developer_Direct recap also listed Steam and Xbox Cloud, and said a PlayStation 5 version was planned for later in 2026. Xbox Play Anywhere applies to qualifying Xbox or Windows purchases; it does not make a purchase transferable to PlayStation or Steam.

Beast of Reincarnation: a one-person, one-dog action RPG
Game Freak introduced Beast of Reincarnation as a “one-person, one-dog action RPG” set in post-apocalyptic Japan around 4026 AD. Emma, the protagonist, has a blight that erases memories and emotions while granting her the ability to manipulate plants. Her companion Koo is a dog transformed into a “malefact.”
Emma fights with real-time action attacks, while Koo’s skills are selected through a menu that slows time. The design pairs fast combat with more deliberate, tactical decisions, and Xbox’s recap identified three difficulty settings. That recap gave a summer 2026 launch window and listed Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud, Xbox Play Anywhere, handheld optimization and day-one Game Pass Ultimate availability. It directed readers to the developer for information about other platforms; those listed details do not establish a broader platform lineup or a later release status.

Kiln: Double Fine’s surprise pottery brawler
Double Fine’s Kiln was the broadcast’s unannounced fourth game. Xbox described it as an online multiplayer pottery-party brawler: players shape ceramic fighters on a pottery wheel, then take them into 4v4 arena matches. The pot a player creates determines its ceramic armor and combat abilities, tying creation directly to how each match plays.
The January recap listed a spring 2026 window, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud, Xbox Play Anywhere, handheld optimization, PlayStation 5 and Steam. It also described a planned closed beta. These are the details announced at the event, rather than confirmation of a later launch or beta status.

Platforms and Game Pass, title by title
The lineup was not uniformly Xbox-exclusive. Xbox’s event recap identified different platform combinations for each game; the table separates those announcement-era details from the current information supplied by official game pages.
| Game | Platforms and availability named in the recap | Release timing stated at the event |
|---|---|---|
| Fable | Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud, Steam and PlayStation 5; Xbox Play Anywhere; Game Pass Ultimate. | Autumn 2026 in the recap. Microsoft’s current official page lists February 23, 2027. |
| Forza Horizon 6 | Xbox, PC, Steam and Xbox Cloud; Xbox Play Anywhere. The recap said PlayStation 5 was planned for later in 2026. | May 19, 2026. |
| Beast of Reincarnation | Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud and Xbox Play Anywhere; handheld optimization and day-one Game Pass Ultimate. The recap referred readers to the developer for other platforms. | Summer 2026. |
| Kiln | Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud, Xbox Play Anywhere, handhelds, PlayStation 5 and Steam; Game Pass Ultimate. | Spring 2026; a closed beta was planned. |
The Game Pass statements above reflect the January 22 recap’s announcement of day-one Game Pass Ultimate availability, with the title and platform qualifications in that recap. They should not be read as a claim that every version on every platform is included. Xbox Play Anywhere concerns supported Xbox and Windows purchases, not Steam or PlayStation copies.
What changed after the event
The clearest change to the Developer_Direct’s release outlook is Fable: Xbox’s recap had said autumn 2026, while Microsoft’s current official page lists February 23, 2027. For Forza Horizon 6, the current official page continues to list May 19, 2026. The windows given for Beast of Reincarnation and Kiln here are the ones in the January recap; without a current official status for either, they should not be treated as confirmation that the games released, remain unreleased or kept those windows.
For readers weighing subscription against purchase, the event’s Game Pass Ultimate announcements make the service relevant if they plan to play several eligible releases. A subscription is not the same as owning a game, and the event did not make every platform edition interchangeable. Check the current listing for the specific game and platform before choosing a purchase or subscription.
