Forbes’ real-time billionaire profile listed Persson at approximately $1.4 billion on July 28, 2026. That is an estimate, not an audited statement or a disclosure of how much cash he holds. Net worth means the estimated value of assets minus liabilities; asset prices, investment performance, taxes, spending and the assumptions used by a ranking can all affect the figure.
Older figures should be read with their dates attached. Forbes estimated Persson’s wealth at $1.3 billion in March 2015, and Biography.com reported a Forbes estimate of $1.3 billion in April 2025. Those numbers do not necessarily contradict the newer profile figure; estimates may be updated at different times and use different assumptions.
How Markus Persson made his fortune
Persson, known online as Notch, created Minecraft and co-founded Mojang, the Swedish game studio behind it. Minecraft grew from an independent game project into a major commercial success, with a commercial release by Mojang in 2011. Microsoft announced in September 2014 that it would buy Mojang for $2.5 billion in cash. The acquisition made Microsoft the owner of the studio and Minecraft property.

Forbes described Persson as owning approximately 71% of Mojang before the sale. That reported stake helps explain why the acquisition was the central wealth-creating event in his career. It does not mean that he personally received the full $2.5 billion.

The acquisition price was for the company, and other co-founders and shareholders also held interests. The arithmetic does not establish Persson’s precise proceeds after taxes, fees or contractual arrangements. Nor does it determine what his remaining assets and liabilities are worth today.
Why published net-worth estimates differ
Net-worth pages can show different figures without one necessarily being a mistake. They may use different valuation dates, update schedules and assumptions about assets that are not publicly traded. Some pages also repeat an older estimate long after a newer one appears. Forbes’ $1.4 billion figure is the latest dated estimate cited here, but it remains an estimate rather than a public accounting of Persson’s finances.

Persson’s reported Beverly Hills purchase
In December 2014, Bloomberg reported that Persson bought a Beverly Hills mansion for $70 million. The property was described as approximately 23,000 square feet, with eight bedrooms and 15 bathrooms. Forbes also covered the purchase and his post-sale lifestyle, including travel and luxury spending.
Those reports document a major purchase at that time, not Persson’s complete present-day portfolio. They do not establish whether he still owns the property or what it would be worth now, so its 2014 price should not be treated as a current asset valuation.

Does Markus Persson still own Minecraft?
No. Microsoft acquired Mojang in 2014 and owns the studio and Minecraft property. Persson is Minecraft’s creator and a former Mojang owner, not its current owner or controller.
