Why Can’t I Hear Game Audio Through My Headset on PC?

If your PC game is silent through a headset, check its Volume Mixer output and volume first, then verify the game’s own audio settings and headset connection.

If your headset works for Windows sounds or voice chat but your game is silent, the headset may be fine: Windows can route each app to a different output or mute it independently. Start with the game’s Volume Mixer entry and selected output before reinstalling drivers or replacing hardware.

Find the symptom that matches

What happens Where to look first
No sound anywhere Windows output selection, mute or volume, device state, connection, driver, or headset.
Windows sounds and browser audio work, but one game is silent That game’s Volume Mixer level and output, its own audio settings, or a game-specific problem.
Game audio comes through speakers or a monitor Windows default output and the game’s per-app output route.
Voice chat works but game audio does not Game/chat balance, separate Game and Chat playback devices, or in-game audio mix.
Audio stops when a game launches The game may have kept an earlier output route; select the headset and relaunch.
Bluetooth audio becomes muffled or goes quiet when the microphone is used Bluetooth audio profile or communications behavior; see the Bluetooth checks below.
The headset is missing from Windows’ output list Cable or USB port, receiver, Bluetooth pairing, driver, or device failure.
Only one ear works or sound is very quiet Headset balance and volume, connection, game/chat dial, or physical damage.

Check the headset and connection

Before changing software settings, check controls and connections on the headset itself. Some models have separate master-volume and game/chat wheels; not all do. A balance dial turned fully toward chat can leave voice audible while game sound seems absent.

  • Check the headset’s mute switch, master-volume wheel, and battery or power state. A flip-up microphone arm may mute the microphone, but does not necessarily mute playback.
  • For USB wireless models, connect the receiver directly to the PC rather than through a hub, then confirm the receiver is powered and recognized.
  • For a 3.5-mm headset, make sure the plug is in the headphone or headset jack. Some desktop PCs have separate headphone and microphone ports; a combined headset plug may need a compatible splitter.
  • If the headset is connected to a controller, confirm Windows detects the controller and that audio is routed through it. If supported, test the headset directly on the PC over USB or its audio jack.
  • If you recently connected a monitor by HDMI or DisplayPort, a controller, or another USB audio device, check whether Windows switched outputs.
  • For Bluetooth, disconnect the headset from a phone or other nearby device while testing. Being paired does not guarantee it is the active Windows playback device.

Select the headset as Windows 11’s output

  1. Select the speaker icon on the taskbar and open the available sound-output list.
  2. Choose the headset, then raise the volume and confirm sound is not muted.
  3. Open Settings > System > Sound and verify that the headset appears as an output device.
  4. If the device is absent or not working, select it to inspect its properties and confirm it is enabled. For deeper playback-device controls, open More sound settings.

For a digital device connected over USB, HDMI, or a similar connection, set the intended headset as the default playback device if Windows is sending audio elsewhere. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Sound > More sound settings, select the headset on the Playback tab, and choose Set as Default Device. If you use a separate communications device, check Set as Default Communication Device where applicable.

A monitor can be selected as the output even if it has no speakers. Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting guide covers output selection, device properties, enabled state, and setting the correct playback device as default.

Check the game in Volume Mixer

Windows 11 allows an app’s volume and output to differ from the system-wide settings. This is one of the first places to look when other audio works but a game does not.

  1. Launch or resume the game and get to a point where it should produce sound.
  2. Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
  3. Under Apps, find the running game. Raise its volume and make sure it is not muted.
  4. Check the game’s Output device. If it is routed to speakers, a monitor, a controller, or another headset, select the headset. If Default is routing incorrectly, select the headset explicitly.
  5. Return to the game and test audio.

If the game does not appear, keep it running and producing sound, then return to the mixer. Some launchers and games appear as separate apps, so check for both. If its entry is stuck or its route will not update, close and reopen the game; restart Windows if necessary. Microsoft explains per-app volume and output selection in its guide to app audio problems when system sounds work. A Microsoft Q&A report also describes games that need a relaunch after an output change, though behavior varies by game: sound device behavior when launching games.

Check the game’s audio settings

Look in the game’s audio or sound menu for master volume, effects, music, dialogue, voice-chat level, output device, audio mode, dynamic range, or a “mute when unfocused” option. Not every game offers an output-device selector; many use Windows’ default or app-specific route.

  1. Raise the game’s master volume and the relevant sound categories.
  2. If an output selector exists, choose the headset, Headphones, or Default, as appropriate.
  3. Temporarily switch to stereo or headphones mode if an unusual surround or home-theater mode is selected.
  4. Apply changes, exit the game completely, and relaunch it with the headset already connected and selected in Windows.

If the game offers an audio reset or restore-defaults option, try it before editing configuration files. Change one setting at a time so you can identify what restores sound.

Separate game audio from voice chat

Some gaming headsets expose separate playback devices such as Game and Chat, alongside a microphone input. Others expose only one playback device. If yours has separate channels, assign the game to the headset’s Game output in Volume Mixer and route Discord, Xbox Game Bar, or another chat app to Chat only if that split is supported by the headset.

Check the headset’s physical game/chat control as well as Windows routing. Microsoft’s Xbox gaming-headset information describes a chat mixer that adjusts game and chat balance. Xbox app or Game Bar settings may also matter when using Xbox PC games or party chat. Do not assign separate channels if Windows lists only one playback device for your headset.

Bluetooth-specific checks

Bluetooth headsets can be paired and connected yet use an unsuitable or unexpected audio route. The available behavior depends on the headset, Bluetooth adapter, Windows build, and supported Bluetooth features.

  1. Choose the headset as the active output in Windows, rather than relying on its paired status.
  2. Disconnect it from phones or other computers that may be using it.
  3. If Windows offers distinct stereo/headphones and hands-free or headset-communications outputs, test the stereo/headphones output for game playback.
  4. If audio changes when the headset microphone activates, temporarily disable that microphone or test with a separate USB microphone. A USB wireless receiver or wired connection is another diagnostic option if your headset supports it.
  5. If it remains unreliable, remove the headset from Windows Bluetooth devices, pair it again, and check the manufacturer’s official app for firmware updates.

Do not assume that changing profiles will always provide both high-quality stereo playback and microphone audio at once; results depend on the specific hardware and Bluetooth capabilities.

Test audio enhancements and spatial sound

Enhancements or spatial processing can sometimes conflict with a game or another headset effect. Use this as a temporary test, not a reason to leave useful features off permanently.

  2. Set Audio enhancements to Off, if that option is present, and set spatial audio to Off.
  3. Test the game. If sound returns, re-enable one feature at a time to find the conflict.

Microsoft lists audio enhancements among possible causes of sound problems in its speaker and headphone audio troubleshooting guide. Spatial audio itself is not inherently a problem; it is one variable to isolate.

Restart Windows audio services and use the troubleshooter

If audio behavior is inconsistent, a device change has not taken effect, or the game is missing from Volume Mixer, restart the Windows audio services.

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Audio, right-click it, and choose Restart.
  3. Repeat for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
  4. Reopen the game and test.

Microsoft includes restarting these services among its steps for app audio failures when system sounds work. If broader Windows audio still fails, use the automated audio troubleshooter through the Get Help app; Microsoft’s audio troubleshooting guide directs Windows 11 users to that tool.

Recover a disabled or faulty audio device

Confirm the device is enabled

Open Settings > System > Sound, select the headset, and inspect its device properties. Also check More sound settings > Playback to make sure it is not disabled.

Update or reinstall the driver

  1. Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  2. Right-click the relevant audio device and try Update driver, then restart the PC.
  3. If the problem began after a driver update, consider rolling back that driver.
  4. If the device remains broken, uninstall it in Device Manager and restart so Windows can reinstall it.
  5. For branded USB, Bluetooth, or wireless headsets, use the manufacturer’s official driver or firmware utility when Windows’ generic driver is insufficient.

Microsoft identifies outdated or incompatible drivers as a possible cause of app audio problems and recommends updating through Device Manager. Avoid third-party driver-download utilities.

Isolate the game, PC, connection, or headset

Try these checks to find out whether the problem follows the game, the PC, or the headset:

  • Test a Windows notification sound and a browser video.
  • Try another game, then test the affected game through speakers.
  • Try the headset on another computer, phone, or console that supports its connection.
  • Connect a different headset to the same PC.
  • For a USB headset, try another direct USB port; for an analog headset, test another compatible jack or device.
  • Temporarily close Discord, Xbox Game Bar, headset software, and audio overlays to test for interference.
  • If only one game fails, verify its files through its launcher or use its in-game audio reset option.
Test result Likely area
Only one game fails Game settings, configuration, launcher, or a game-specific issue.
All games fail, but browsers work Game routing, game/chat device conflict, or overlay or headset-software interference.
Another headset works on this PC; this one fails on multiple devices The failing headset, cable, receiver, firmware, battery, or compatibility.
Speakers work, but the headset does not Headset output selection, device state, connection, driver, or headset hardware.

When replacement is worth considering

Do not buy a headset to solve a Windows routing problem. Consider repair or replacement if the headset has physical damage, will not charge or power on, or consistently fails on other compatible devices while a different headset works on the same PC. For basic troubleshooting, match the connection to your setup: a wired 3.5-mm headset avoids battery and receiver variables but may need the right jack or splitter; USB and 2.4-GHz wireless add receiver, software, firmware, or battery variables; Bluetooth is convenient but can add profile and microphone complications.
