Puget-Altus means Modern Warfare II could not complete a connection to Call of Duty’s online services; it does not identify the cause. An Activision or platform outage, a failed sign-in session, a home-network restriction, or a game update problem can all prevent access. Check live service status first, then work through the least disruptive fixes for your platform.
What the Puget-Altus error means
The message may appear as “Connection Failed,” “Unable to access online services,” and “Reason: PUGET-ALTUS” (sometimes shown as “Puget – Altus”). It is a connection-stage label, not a documented diagnosis of a particular router, console, or account fault. Activision’s current support material does not provide a unique technical explanation for the code, so the message alone cannot tell you whether the failure is on your side or Activision’s.
The same or similar online-services message can occur in other Call of Duty games, too. Confirm which title and platform are failing before applying a fix intended for MWII.
Check whether Call of Duty or your platform is down
- Open Activision’s Modern Warfare II Online Services page and select the game if prompted.
- Check your platform’s own status as well: PlayStation Network, Xbox, Steam, or Battle.net. Activision distinguishes its game services from platform networks and links to platform status pages through its general Online Services page.
- Check official Activision support updates for a newly reported incident. If other players report the same failure, treat that as a clue, not confirmation.
- Test another online game or another Call of Duty title. If several games fail on one platform, platform or network service is more likely; if only MWII fails, focus next on its update, files, or sign-in session.
A sudden failure while you were already playing, simultaneous reports from multiple players, or a published maintenance notice makes a service-side problem more likely. These are practical indicators, not official Puget-Altus criteria. If a service incident is reported, wait for it to clear rather than changing router settings or reinstalling the game.

As of August 18, 2026, Activision’s indexed status page did not show a Puget-Altus-specific incident record. The status page is dynamic, so that dated observation does not establish whether services are up now; refresh it when the error occurs.
Try these quick checks before changing settings
- Fully quit MWII. Close the game rather than leaving it suspended on a console or in the background on PC, then relaunch it. This tests whether the error was a temporary session failure.
- Install pending updates. Check MWII and Call of Duty HQ, your console or Windows, and the Steam, Battle.net, or Xbox app client you use. Activision’s MWII support hub lists installation, known-issue, connection, and platform-specific support.
- Restart the console or PC, then the modem and router. Power down the network equipment, wait several minutes, and turn it back on. Wait until the connection is fully restored before launching the game. Activision also recommends restarting the router in its MWII connection guidance.
- Reduce network competition. Pause downloads, cloud backups, and streaming while testing. If possible, connect by Ethernet; Activision recommends a wired connection and limiting bandwidth-heavy activity.
- Try a phone hotspot only as a test. If the game connects on the hotspot but not at home, the home router, ISP route, DNS, NAT, or network filtering becomes more likely. A hotspot may have unsuitable latency, data limits, or stability for regular multiplayer.
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 fixes
- Check PlayStation Network status, restart the console, and run Settings → Network → Test Internet Connection (menu wording may differ slightly by system version).
- Confirm the game and console system software are up to date.
- Restore licenses if the game has an entitlement or content-validation problem. On PS5, go to Settings → Users and Accounts → Other → Restore Licenses. On PS4, use the equivalent Restore Licenses option under account management. PlayStation documents license restoration and game troubleshooting in its downloaded-game troubleshooting guide.
- If the failure persists, use the console’s Safe Mode cache/database tools: PS5 offers Clear Cache and Rebuild Database; PS4 provides Rebuild Database where applicable. See PlayStation’s PS5 support instructions for Safe Mode options.
- Delete and reinstall only after the earlier checks fail, particularly if an update or content pack appears damaged.
Restoring licenses and clearing cache are not factory resets. Do not select Reset PS5 or initialize a console as a routine fix: those destructive reset options can remove user data. PlayStation explains the difference in its restore-default-settings guidance. License restoration is most relevant to digital entitlements and the account that owns them; it will not repair a damaged disc.

Xbox fixes
- Check Xbox network status, fully quit MWII, and relaunch it. Restart the console and router, then run the Xbox network test and note the NAT type shown.
- Install pending console and game updates. If the network state still appears stale, clear the Alternate MAC address: Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → General → Network settings → Advanced settings → Alternate MAC address → Clear → Restart.
Activision lists the Alternate MAC procedure and other general Xbox troubleshooting in its MWII crashes or game freezes guide. Clearing it may help with stale network state; it is not a guaranteed Puget-Altus fix. If other online games fail on Xbox too, investigate Xbox service status or the network before reinstalling MWII.
Steam, Battle.net, and Microsoft PC installations
Steam
- Exit MWII and Steam completely, reopen Steam, and install pending updates.
- In Steam, open the game’s properties and use Verify integrity of game files.
- Temporarily close overlays, capture utilities, remappers, monitoring tools, and other background programs that may interfere. Check firewall and antivirus rules without disabling system protection broadly.
Battle.net
- Exit and reopen Battle.net, then install pending launcher and game updates.
- Use Battle.net’s Scan and Repair option for MWII.
- Close overlays and other background applications, check that the game is allowed through the firewall, then restart the PC and router if needed.
Activision’s MWII PC troubleshooting guide covers Steam file verification, Battle.net Scan and Repair, and software that can interfere with the game. Its Windows 10 and Windows 11 notes are from a guide last updated April 26, 2023, so do not treat it as a current, complete system-requirements list.

Microsoft PC / Xbox app
- Update the Xbox app and Gaming Services, and confirm you are signed into the intended Microsoft/Xbox account.
- Check that the Xbox app and game use the same account, then restart the app and PC.
- If ordinary relaunching fails, consider repairing or resetting the relevant app through Windows app settings. These are general Microsoft-app troubleshooting steps, not a Puget-Altus remedy documented by Activision.
Check sign-in, account, and license state
Sign out and back in to the game launcher or console account if the connection error followed a password, security, or account-link change. Confirm that you are using the platform account with the game entitlement; on a shared console, the account and sharing arrangement can affect license validation. An interrupted Activision account link or a failed authentication session may also block online access.
Puget-Altus does not establish that an account is banned. If you suspect an account-security or enforcement issue, check the account and enforcement resources linked from Activision’s MWII support hub rather than inferring a ban from a connection message.

Investigate NAT, router, DNS, or network filtering
If the game works on a hotspot or wired connection but not on your usual network, work through these checks:
- Prefer Ethernet for a comparison test and stop downloads, streaming, and cloud backups.
- Restart the modem and router, then check the NAT type reported by your console or platform. Activision explains that Moderate/Type 2 and Strict/Type 3 NAT can limit peer connections, while Open/Type 1 generally has fewer restrictions, in its Port Forward and NAT FAQ.
- If appropriate for your router, check whether UPnP is enabled. If your setup has two routers both routing traffic, double NAT may be involved. Carrier-grade NAT from an ISP, or a school, hotel, workplace, or public network, may prevent you from changing the relevant restrictions yourself; ask the ISP or network administrator.
- Disable a VPN or traffic filter temporarily for diagnosis. For firewall or antivirus rules, make narrow exceptions for the official game and launcher rather than turning protection off system-wide.
- Consider port forwarding only as an advanced, network-specific step after checking for an outage and simpler causes. It is not a universal fix for an Activision outage, account failure, or damaged installation, and incorrect rules can create security or connectivity problems.
DNS is another optional test, not the first fix. Changing DNS may help if the ISP resolver is failing or returning stale results, but it cannot repair an outage, account problem, or corrupt game files. Record your original DNS settings before changing them and restore them if there is no improvement; no one public DNS provider is established here as best for MWII.

When to reinstall MWII
Reinstallation is more reasonable when the error began after a failed update, MWII repeatedly loops through update or content checks, other games connect normally, or a repair/verification tool reports damaged files. Before downloading the full game again, confirm services are operating, apply updates, reauthenticate, restart the network, and use the relevant file-repair or platform cache/license steps above.
On PlayStation, deleting and reinstalling is part of the escalation path for persistent game or update problems in PlayStation’s system-software and application troubleshooting guidance. Reinstalling may help with a damaged local installation, but not a server-side outage.
When to contact Activision or platform support
If services appear available and platform-specific checks have not resolved the error, use Activision’s Online Services support and outage-reporting path, or contact the platform’s support team if its network or account is involved. Include useful diagnostic details:
- Game title, platform, edition, and launcher.
- Exact error wording, plus the date and time with time zone.
- Whether other Call of Duty titles and other online games work.
- Whether the game connects on a different network, and the NAT type if available.
- Steps already tried and a screenshot or video of the error.
Campaign or offline access does not prove that online authentication is working; those modes can depend on different services and content checks.
