How to Fix Fortnite Crashing on PC: A Step-by-Step Guide

Fortnite crashes have different causes. Identify the failure pattern, try targeted low-risk repairs first, and move to hardware diagnosis if other games crash too.

There is no single fix for Fortnite crashing on every Windows PC. Start by identifying when it crashes, then work through low-risk checks before resetting settings or reinstalling anything. This guide follows Epic’s staged troubleshooting approach; its published PC requirements and support steps are subject to change.

Identify the kind of crash first

The timing and error message narrow down which fixes are worth trying. Write down the exact message and note whether the failure happens before a window appears, while loading, in a match, or only after the PC has been running the game for a while.

  • Launcher says Fortnite is running, but no window appears: Start with file verification and, if relevant, Easy Anti-Cheat repair.
  • It exits during launch or loading: Check files, drivers, and local configuration; an anti-cheat error points to the Easy Anti-Cheat steps below.
  • It crashes in a match: Check graphics drivers, rendering mode, background software, temperatures, and system stability.
  • It freezes or shows a black screen: Prioritize rendering mode, GPU selection, and graphics-driver checks.
  • “The application has hung and will now close”: Try launching without a connected controller first; Epic documents this as a possible trigger.
  • It crashes after a game or Windows update: Verify files and consider whether a driver change or local settings reset matches the timing.
  • Only settings reset: Check the settings file’s read-only status; that symptom alone does not establish that the game is crashing.
  • An ESP or connection error appears: Treat it as a possible service or network problem rather than assuming the GPU is at fault. Epic advises checking service status for connection-related errors.

Restart Windows and temporarily disconnect nonessential peripherals such as controllers, USB hubs, or capture devices. These are low-risk diagnostic checks, not guaranteed fixes. If the issue began immediately after an update, note that timing. Check Epic’s guidance for Fortnite ESP errors and the linked service-status information before making local changes; this article does not assert that an outage is occurring.

Check whether the PC meets Epic’s requirements

Epic’s currently published requirements list these Windows PC baselines. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a crash-free experience; Epic notes that minimum-spec PCs may need lower graphics settings and fewer background applications.

Graphics Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon Vega 8 NVIDIA GTX 960, AMD R9 280, or equivalent DirectX 11 GPU with 2 GB VRAM
Storage Not stated in Epic’s cited requirements NVMe SSD

See Epic’s published Fortnite PC requirements. Requirements establish a baseline, not a guarantee of stability: drivers, heat, storage faults, unstable memory, security software, or a game-specific issue can still cause crashes.

Try the low-risk repairs first

Verify Fortnite’s files

Use verification for a launch problem or a suspected damaged or incomplete installation. Epic says it checks local files and repairs files that differ or are corrupted; it does not affect saved data. It may take time and download or replace files, but it is not a full game reinstall.

  1. Open Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
  2. Find Fortnite, select the three-dot menu, then choose Manage.
  3. Select Verify and wait for validation to finish before launching the game.

Epic’s verification instructions are linked from its support article.

Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache

Try this if the launcher itself displays incorrectly, fails to start Fortnite, or behaves as if its cached data is stale. It is not a substitute for repairing game files.

  1. Close Fortnite. In the Windows notification area, select the upward arrow, right-click the Epic Games icon, and choose Exit.
  2. Press Windows + R, enter %localappdata%, and press Enter.
  3. Open EpicGamesLauncherSaved.
  4. Delete any of these folders that exist: webcache, webcache_4147, and webcache_4430.
  5. Reopen Epic Games Launcher and test Fortnite.

Epic says the launcher rebuilds the cache when needed; not every PC will have all three folders. See Epic’s cache-clearing instructions.

Update or reinstall the graphics driver

Driver troubleshooting is especially relevant after a Fortnite or Windows update, or when the symptom is a black screen, freeze, flicker, or other rendering problem. Use the official page for the graphics hardware in your PC:

A newer driver is not automatically the right fix. If the crash began immediately after a driver update, consider the manufacturer’s clean-install or rollback options instead of reinstalling the same version. Epic also identifies graphics drivers as a possible cause of post-update hitching and crashes in its post-update troubleshooting guidance.

Run the launcher as administrator

As a diagnostic, close the launcher, right-click its shortcut, and select Run as administrator, then try Fortnite. Windows may ask for confirmation. This is a test for a permissions-related problem, not a reason to run every application with elevated access permanently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot graphics-related crashes

Test a different rendering mode

If DirectX 12 coincides with crashes, freezes, or black screens, Epic documents a command-line test that may help. It is not a guaranteed fix, and a rendering-mode change can affect visual quality, performance, shader compilation, and stability.

  1. Open Epic Games Launcher and select Settings.
  2. Scroll down and expand Fortnite.
  3. Enable Additional Command Line Arguments.
  4. Enter -d3d12 -es31, then launch Fortnite and test.

If it does not help, remove the argument and test again. Follow Epic’s Fortnite graphics troubleshooting steps; do not add other launch commands from unverified sources.

Lower graphics settings if the game stays open

  1. Open the Fortnite menu and select Settings, then the Video tab.
  2. Set Quality Presets to Low and 3D Resolution to 100%.
  3. Restart Fortnite. If it is stable, raise settings gradually to identify whether a particular load level brings the problem back.

Lower settings can reduce graphics workload, heat, and memory pressure. They will not repair corrupted files, defective hardware, or a broken anti-cheat installation.

Make sure Fortnite uses the dedicated GPU

This check mainly applies to laptops and PCs with integrated and dedicated graphics. The names of settings differ between driver versions and laptop makers; the goal is to assign Fortnite to the high-performance GPU.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • NVIDIA: Right-click the desktop, open NVIDIA Control Panel, choose Manage 3D Settings and Program Settings, select Fortnite, and choose the high-performance GPU.
  • AMD: Open AMD Radeon settings or software, find Switchable Graphics or Graphics Settings, select Fortnite, and choose High Performance.

Epic documents these checks in its graphics guidance.

Check fullscreen behavior, heat, and tuning

For fullscreen crashes or freezes on NVIDIA systems, Epic documents a scaling test: open NVIDIA Control Panel, select Adjust desktop size and position, choose the display, set Scaling mode to Full-screen, and set Perform scaling on to GPU. If those labels differ in your driver software, do not guess at unrelated settings.

If problems appear only after extended play, check that vents are clear, remove dust from fans and airflow openings, and use the PC in a well-ventilated area. A reputable temperature-monitoring utility can help identify a temperature rise over time; no single temperature threshold is established here as safe for every PC. Temporarily return CPU or GPU overclocks and undervolts to stock settings when testing, since unstable tuning can imitate a game fault.

Fix launch and Easy Anti-Cheat errors

Repair the installed Easy Anti-Cheat service

Use this route for an Easy Anti-Cheat error or when the launcher shows Fortnite as running but no game window appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In Epic Games Launcher, find Fortnite, select its three-dot menu, then choose Manage.
  2. Select Open Install Location.
  3. Open FortniteGameBinariesWin64EasyAntiCheat.
  4. Open EasyAntiCheat Setup, select the current game, and choose Repair Service.
  5. Relaunch Fortnite.

Use the copy installed with Fortnite or Epic’s official instructions for when Fortnite appears to be running but does not open. Do not download repair executables from third-party sites.

Use Epic’s EOS installer instructions for an installation error

If the error concerns Easy Anti-Cheat installation rather than a service that needs repair, Epic documents a separate procedure using EasyAntiCheat_EOS_Setup.exe: locate the file, create a shortcut, open the shortcut’s Properties, append install prod-fn to its target, apply the change, and run the shortcut. Then reopen Epic Games Launcher and start Fortnite. Follow the exact current directions in Epic’s Easy Anti-Cheat installation guidance.

Disconnect a controller for the “application has hung” message

Epic identifies a connected controller as a possible trigger for “The application has hung and will now close.” Disconnect the controller, restart the PC, and launch Fortnite. If the message remains, update Windows, verify game files, and update graphics drivers; reinstall the game only if those checks fail. This is an error-specific test, not a general fix for every crash. See Epic’s guidance for this error.

Address update-related and configuration problems

Reset Fortnite’s local configuration only when appropriate

If the game crashes consistently at launch, settings appear corrupted, or the failure followed an update, resetting the local configuration is a later step—not a routine first fix. Epic warns that this may reset in-game settings. Save or photograph settings you want to recreate before proceeding.

  1. Close Fortnite and Epic Games Launcher.
  2. Press Windows + R, enter %localappdata%, and press Enter.
  3. Delete the FortniteGame folder.
  4. Restart the PC, then run Epic Games Launcher as administrator.
  5. Open Library, select Fortnite’s three-dot menu, choose Manage, then select Verify.
  6. Launch Fortnite and reconfigure any settings that were reset.

This removes local configuration; do not treat it as a promise that every preference or keybind will be restored automatically. Epic’s local FortniteGame reset instructions include the settings warning.

Check for settings-file permissions

If Fortnite’s settings reset on every launch but the game does not otherwise crash, inspect %localappdata%FortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClientGameUserSettings.ini. Right-click the file, choose Properties, clear Read-only if selected, and apply the change. Epic includes this check in its graphics and settings troubleshooting article.

Test background software and security conflicts carefully

Overlays, recording or streaming tools, hardware-monitoring overlays, RGB utilities, third-party antivirus or firewall software, VPNs, proxies, and tuning utilities are possible conflicts to test—not confirmed causes. Close or disable one candidate at a time, relaunch Fortnite, and note whether the result changes. Avoid disabling security protection wholesale.

Epic’s escalation guidance includes adding the Fortnite folder to Windows Security exclusions. Treat this only as a temporary, narrow diagnostic test: open Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection, choose Manage settings, then Exclusions and Add or remove exclusions, and add only the trusted Fortnite folder. An exclusion reduces scanning protection for that folder. Remove it if the test does not help; even if it does, the result alone does not prove antivirus was the root cause. See Epic’s exclusion instructions.

Use the symptom to choose the next branch

Symptom Prioritize these checks What it points toward
Launcher says Fortnite is running, but no window appears Verify files; repair Easy Anti-Cheat; temporarily test a narrow security exclusion Launch, anti-cheat, or security conflict
Crash immediately after a Fortnite update Verify files; check graphics driver timing; consider a local configuration reset Driver, installation, or configuration
Black screen or freeze under DirectX 12 Test Epic’s documented rendering argument; lower settings; update or reassess driver Rendering or graphics driver
Crash only with a controller connected Disconnect it, restart, and test Peripheral-specific trigger
Crash after extended play Check temperatures, airflow, tuning, and power stability Heat or broader hardware instability
Settings reset every launch Check whether GameUserSettings.ini is read-only File permissions
Corrupted-data message Verify files; check free storage and system clock Installation or storage issue
Only Fortnite crashes Check files, Easy Anti-Cheat, driver, overlays, and local configuration Game-specific issue is more plausible
Multiple games crash Check GPU, memory, temperatures, power, storage, and Windows System-level instability is more plausible
ESP or connection error Check service status, network, VPN or proxy, and firewall Service or network branch, not necessarily graphics

Reinstall only after targeted checks fail

Epic’s escalation process puts launcher or game reinstallation after less destructive troubleshooting. Reinstalling takes time and will not resolve overheating, unstable RAM, a driver regression, or other hardware and Windows problems by itself.

  • Keep adequate free space available and consider whether the original drive reports errors.
  • If file problems repeatedly return or the drive reports errors, testing installation on another drive may help distinguish a storage issue.
  • Reinstall Epic Games Launcher or Fortnite only after the relevant file, cache, driver, graphics, anti-cheat, and configuration checks have failed.
  • Do not delete Windows folders or registry entries as a first-line Fortnite repair.

Epic’s crash troubleshooting guidance outlines a staged escalation that includes drive checks, reinstalling, and contacting the hardware manufacturer.

When to stop treating it as a Fortnite-only problem

If other demanding games also crash, the PC shuts down, graphical artifacts appear, or crashes correlate with heavy load, shift from game repairs to system diagnosis. Possible areas include GPU instability, defective or unstable RAM, CPU or GPU overheating, power delivery, storage errors, unstable overclocking or undervolting, Windows component corruption, or laptop thermal and power management. Those are possibilities to investigate, not a diagnosis from the Fortnite symptom alone.

Stop repeated reinstalls if failures span multiple games or storage errors recur. Use the PC or component manufacturer’s support, or a qualified repair service, for hardware testing. Epic’s support escalation guidance also directs unresolved cases to the hardware manufacturer.
