Press the Xbox button to open the Guide, then select Audio & music to adjust headset volume, game-versus-chat balance, and mic monitoring when your connected device supports them. The controller is a route to these controls—not a universal volume rocker: a headset, adapter, TV, or soundbar may have its own controls.
Choose the control that matches what you want to change
- Headset volume changes the overall loudness you hear through your headset.
- Headset chat mixer changes the relative level of game sound and party or chat audio. It is not a master-volume control.
- Mic monitoring changes how much of your own voice you hear in the headset. Some devices call this sidetone; it does not directly make your voice louder to other players.
- TV or speaker volume changes sound from a TV, soundbar, or receiver, separately from headset volume.
- Game audio settings control mixes such as music, effects, dialogue, and in-game voice chat.
Adjust headset volume from the Xbox Guide
- Connect or turn on your headset.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Open Audio & music, usually shown with a speaker icon in the Guide.
- Raise or lower Headset volume. If available, use Headset chat mixer and Mic monitoring for their separate purposes.
- Check the result in a game or party chat.
Some headsets and adapters handle volume on the device itself rather than through Xbox software. Xbox’s headset guidance describes the Guide controls and supported headset features.
Balance game audio and party chat
Use Headset chat mixer when one audio source is overpowering the other. Move the balance toward game audio to hear more of the game, or toward chat to hear more of the party. Xbox describes the slider as a balance control; at an extreme, it can effectively mute the other category. Start near the middle, then adjust in small steps.
- Chat is clear, but game sound is missing: move the mixer away from the chat-only side and check the game’s own audio sliders.
- Game sound is loud, but friends are hard to hear: move the mixer toward chat and confirm you are in the intended party or game-chat channel.
Adjust mic monitoring
Lower Mic monitoring if your own voice sounds distracting or too loud in your headset; raise it if you want to hear more of yourself while speaking. This is local feedback for you, not a control for another player’s voice or for how loudly others receive your microphone.

Use the controls on your headset or adapter
Wired headset connected to the controller
Check the headset’s inline volume wheel and mute switch before changing console settings. A low inline setting can make the headset seem quiet even when Xbox volume is raised. Xbox confirms that Series X|S controllers have a 3.5 mm headset jack, but that should not be assumed of every older controller. A 3.5 mm plug also does not by itself guarantee microphone or button compatibility. See Xbox’s stereo headset setup guide.
Xbox Wireless Headset
The official Xbox Wireless Headset has a physical earcup volume control as well as Guide settings for supported headset volume, chat mixing, and mic monitoring. The earcup control is convenient during play; the Guide is useful when you need to inspect the mix. For pairing or connection issues, consult Xbox’s headset guidance.

Headset or chat adapter
An adapter may provide physical volume, game/chat balance, and mute controls. Use its controls if the Guide slider is unavailable or the adapter is the device managing that setting. Older Xbox One setups may use an adapter, while many newer controllers accept a headset directly; compatibility and available controls vary by hardware.
Change TV, soundbar, or receiver volume
Headset volume does not change speaker volume. On compatible HDMI-CEC setups, Xbox can expose TV-volume and mute controls in Audio & music. Microsoft announced this Guide feature on October 19, 2022; it depends on compatible equipment and configuration, so it is not available in every setup. See the Xbox Wire announcement.

- Use the TV-volume or mute option if it appears.
- If it does not appear or has no effect, use the TV or soundbar remote and check that HDMI-CEC is enabled on the relevant devices.
If a receiver or soundbar is the active audio endpoint, it may be the device that must control loudness.
Check system audio settings
For output problems beyond the Guide mixer, open Profile & system > Settings > General > Volume & audio output. Look for the available headset-audio, party-chat-output, speaker-audio, and additional audio options. Depending on console, system update, and connected hardware, labels and submenus may differ; choose the closest equivalent. Options such as speaker behavior while a headset is connected, audio format, and HDMI or optical output on older configurations can affect where sound goes. Microsoft’s audio features guidance is a useful reference.

Troubleshoot common headset-volume problems
Everything is too quiet
- Raise both Guide Headset volume and the headset’s physical or inline volume control.
- Check the game’s master volume and whether the headset has its own power or volume state.
- Confirm the plug or wireless connection is secure and the headset is not muted.
Game audio is missing, but chat works
- Move Headset chat mixer away from the chat-only side.
- Check the game’s master, effects, and dialogue levels.
- Confirm the headset is fully connected, then inspect headset and speaker output in Volume & audio output.
Chat is missing, but game audio works
- Move the chat mixer toward chat.
- Check party-chat output, your selected party or game-chat channel, and the headset’s mute or balance controls.
- Confirm the microphone and headset are connected as intended.
The sliders are greyed out
The connected headset or adapter may require physical adjustment, or Xbox may not be detecting a supported headset. Reconnect the device and try its own controls. A Microsoft Community response documents the message to use the headset or another device to change volume; a greyed-out slider does not by itself prove the console is faulty. See the Microsoft Community discussion.
The headset is connected, but sound comes from the TV
Check whether the headset is a chat-only device, verify headset and party-chat output settings, and confirm it is actually connected to the Xbox rather than paired to another device. Check speaker behavior when a headset is attached if that option is available.

The headset is silent or intermittent
- Check headset volume, mute, power, and battery where applicable.
- For a wired headset, unplug and firmly reconnect the plug; inspect the cable and adapter.
- Try the headset with another compatible device or controller, then test a known-compatible headset with the Xbox.
- Restart the controller and console. Install firmware updates if the headset or controller manufacturer provides them.
- If only one headset fails, investigate that headset, cable, adapter, or its compatibility before replacing the controller.
Xbox provides separate chat-headset troubleshooting guidance.
Check the game’s own audio mix
System volume cannot restore a sound category muted inside a game. Open the game’s audio or accessibility menu and inspect master volume, music, effects, dialogue, cinematics, voice chat, dynamic range or headset mode, and mono/stereo settings where available. These controls can help when only one type of in-game sound is too quiet. Microsoft’s Accessibility Guideline 105 recommends separate controls for audio types including music, sound effects, narration, and voice chat.

Xbox model and interface differences
These steps target Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S console use. Controller ports, headset features, output options, and menu labels vary by generation, system software, and connected hardware. The confirmed 3.5 mm jack statement applies to Series X|S controllers, not every historical Xbox controller. For a compatible-headset connection reference, see Xbox’s headset connection guidance.
