Microsoft began testing automatic OneDrive uploads for Xbox screenshots and game clips on August 30, 2023, initially for Xbox Insiders in the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead rings. The test covered new captures; existing Xbox Network captures needed a separate backup wizard. It was a 2023 preview feature, not a new 2026 announcement.
What Microsoft tested
The August 30, 2023 Xbox Insider release notes described two distinct ways to move captures off the console’s Xbox Network storage:
- Automatic uploads: new screenshots and game clips could be sent to the user’s OneDrive.
- Existing-capture backup: a wizard in the Captures app let users copy captures already stored on the Xbox Network to OneDrive or an external storage device.
Turning on automatic uploads did not, by itself, send the existing collection to OneDrive. That required the backup workflow.
Who could use the feature, and when?
The initial announcement covered Xbox Insiders in the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead rings. Microsoft expanded the preview to Delta in September and then Omega, according to its Delta release notes and Omega release notes. Preview-ring access depended on the console’s update and ring; it did not mean every Xbox owner had the feature at once.

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
Microsoft announced a broader capture-backup experience on September 27, 2023. The sources cited here establish that rollout announcement and its workflow, but do not establish the precise availability or menu labels on every Xbox console in 2026. The original test should therefore be understood in its 2023 context rather than as a newly launched feature.
How the original automatic-upload setting worked
In the preview build, the setting was located at Settings > Preferences > Capture & share > Automatic uploads. Enabling it applied to new screenshots and clips. The exact labels and location describe the 2023 Insider interface; current console software may differ.

How to back up captures that already existed
Microsoft’s September 27, 2023 Xbox Wire update gave this route to the backup wizard:
- Press the Xbox button, then open My games & apps.
- Select See all, open Apps, and choose Captures.
- Select Tell me more to start the backup process.
- Choose OneDrive or an external storage device as the destination.
The wizard’s stated scope was captures stored on the Xbox Network. Do not assume it includes every capture saved only on a local device or external drive.

Early limitations and preview bugs
4K and HDR uploads
At the start of the test, Microsoft said 4K and/or HDR video clips would not automatically upload. On September 8, Alpha Skip-Ahead notes reported a fix for that issue, alongside fixes for external-drive capture setups and OneDrive folder placement. This was a limitation of the initial preview, not evidence that 4K/HDR clips were permanently excluded. See the September 8 Alpha Skip-Ahead notes.
Unexpected OneDrive folders
The initial known-issues list said screenshots could land in Pictures instead of PicturesXbox Screenshots, and video clips in Videos instead of VideosXbox Game DVR. Microsoft later reported that folder placement was fixed in Alpha Skip-Ahead. Those folder names describe the reported preview behavior; they should not be treated as a guarantee of current OneDrive organization.

Large libraries take time
Microsoft warned that a collection of 1,000 or more captures could take several days to appear in OneDrive after starting a backup. A partially populated folder immediately after starting the process was not, by itself, proof that the backup had failed.
Why backing up mattered: Xbox Network captures were not a permanent archive
In its September 27, 2023 announcement, Microsoft said captures stored on the Xbox Network would be deleted after 90 days. That retention policy applied to Xbox Network storage, not files already copied to OneDrive or an external drive. Anyone wanting to keep a clip beyond the network-storage period needed another copy.

Choosing a destination
| Destination | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OneDrive | Automatic cloud backup and access to captures from other devices; Microsoft also described editing OneDrive captures on a PC with Clipchamp. | Cloud capacity and upload speed constrain the workflow. Microsoft’s plan page advertises options including 1 TB per person and up to 6 TB total for multi-person plans; check its current plan page for applicable terms and prices. |
| External storage | Offline copies, large archives, and users who prefer not to send captures to cloud storage. | Requires a storage device and manual file management; it does not provide automatic access across devices. |
| Xbox Network | Short-term access and sharing from the console ecosystem. | Microsoft announced deletion after 90 days, so it is not a permanent archive. |
OneDrive is a natural fit for users who already use Microsoft 365 or want cloud access and PC editing. An external drive is more suitable when offline access or a large local archive matters more than automatic syncing. Neither option removes the need to confirm that the backup has completed and that the files you care about are present.
Quick Recap
What to check if a capture is missing
- The automatic setting is absent: the 2023 feature was rolled out through Insider rings before Microsoft’s broader September announcement. Check the console’s software and current feature availability rather than assuming every build has the same menu.
- A 4K/HDR clip did not upload in an early preview: that was a documented initial limitation; later Alpha Skip-Ahead notes reported a fix. The notes do not establish behavior on every current build.
- The file is in an unexpected folder: folder placement was a known issue in the initial test and was later reported fixed in Alpha Skip-Ahead.
- A large backup looks incomplete: for libraries of 1,000 or more captures, Microsoft said processing could take several days. Allow time for the files to appear before concluding the transfer failed.
- The cloud copy is unavailable: check the OneDrive account’s available capacity. Automatic uploads do not provide unlimited storage.
