Start with ProtonDB Badges or SteamGridDB for practical library help, add CSS Loader for themes, and use PowerTools only if you are comfortable testing performance settings. You do not need all eight: choose the plugins that solve a problem you actually have.
What Steam Deck plugins are—and what they are not
Decky Loader is a community-built framework that adds a plugin panel and browser to the Steam Deck’s Quick Access Menu. Individual plugins add functions such as compatibility information, artwork management, themes, or performance controls. Themes and audio packs are content used by plugins; they are not plugins themselves. Decky and its add-ons are not Valve-supported SteamOS features, and separate utilities such as CryoUtilities or ProtonUp-Qt are not automatically Decky plugins. See the Decky Loader project for its scope and documentation.
Decky is designed to be reversible, but that does not make every add-on risk-free. Plugins have different maintainers and can stop working after a SteamOS or Steam Client update. Use Decky’s built-in store where possible, or a plugin developer’s known official repository; avoid random ZIP downloads and unofficial mirrors.
Quick comparison: which plugin fits your needs?
| Plugin | Best for | Difficulty | Main benefit | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CSS Loader | Interface themes | Easy | Changes Gaming Mode’s appearance | Themes can conflict with Steam Client updates |
| PowerTools | Advanced tuning | Advanced | Exposes CPU, GPU, and power controls | Unsuitable settings can cause instability |
| ProtonDB Badges | Compatibility checks | Easy | Surfaces community Proton information | Reports are not guarantees |
| SteamGridDB | Library artwork | Easy | Adds or changes game artwork | Artwork quality and fit vary |
| Storage Cleaner | Storage review | Moderate | Finds selected shader-cache and compatibility data | Deleted data may be rebuilt |
| AutoFlatpaks | Flatpak apps | Easy | Helps update Flatpak applications from Gaming Mode | Limited value if you only use Steam games |
| DeckSettings | Game configuration | Easy | Offers community-recommended starting settings | Recommendations can become outdated |
| Audio Loader | System sounds | Easy | Applies custom sound packs | Cosmetic only; sounds may be distracting |
Prepare your Steam Deck
- Install pending SteamOS and Steam Client updates before adding plugins, so you begin from a current baseline.
- Make sure you can reach Desktop Mode and have an internet connection.
- A keyboard and mouse make the installer easier, but Decky’s instructions say the right trackpad and on-screen keyboard can be used instead.
- If you have custom artwork or important files, back them up before making substantial changes.
- If you plan to use PowerTools, note your current settings and install only a few plugins at first. That makes it easier to identify what caused a problem.
How to install Decky Loader
The Desktop Mode installer is the recommended beginner route. Labels and installer behavior may change; follow the current prompts from the official Decky Loader repository if they differ from these steps.
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
- Press the Steam button, open Power, and select Switch to Desktop.
- Open a browser and visit the Decky Loader repository linked above. Download the installer from that project.
- If the downloaded file ends in
.desktop.download, rename it todecky_installer.desktop. If needed, drag the installer onto the desktop. - Double-click the installer. Enter your administrator password if prompted, or use the installer’s offered temporary-password option.
- Choose Latest Release for normal use. Choose Latest Pre-Release only if you are troubleshooting or developing and accept that it may be less stable.
- Return to Gaming Mode with the desktop shortcut.
An optional terminal method is available for experienced users. It downloads and runs an installer script, so use it only when obtained from Decky’s official project documentation:
curl -L https://github.com/SteamDeckHomebrew/decky-installer/releases/latest/download/install_release.sh | sh
How to install a plugin from Decky’s browser
- In Gaming Mode, press the … button to open the Quick Access Menu.
- Select the Decky Loader icon, then open its plugin browser or store.
- Choose a plugin and select Install.
- Return to the Decky plugin list and open the installed plugin to configure it.
This is the simplest route for plugins listed in Decky’s browser. Some plugins may be absent because they were removed, are awaiting updates, or are distributed elsewhere. Treat installation from a ZIP as a version-sensitive advanced option: use only the developer’s official repository, then follow the current Decky settings prompts for enabling developer options and selecting Install Plugin from ZIP. Do not install an arbitrary file just because it is offered for download.
The eight best Decky plugins, by use case
1. CSS Loader: best for customizing Gaming Mode
CSS Loader applies community themes and interface modifications, changing elements such as colors, spacing, menus, or library cards. It is a good choice if you want a visibly personalized interface without replacing SteamOS. Decky identifies it among its customization plugins at decky.xyz.
Install CSS Loader from the Decky browser, open it from the Decky panel, and enable a theme. Start with one theme at a time and keep a default option available. Multiple snippets can conflict, and a Steam Client redesign can make a theme look wrong or affect text and button visibility. Skip it if you prefer the standard interface or need predictable accessibility and contrast.
If the interface becomes difficult to use, disable the active theme and its snippets in CSS Loader, return to the default look, and restart Steam. If a recent theme is the only change, remove or disable that first rather than deleting files by guesswork.

We’ve added a dedicated Bluetooth antenna to improve connections for multiple controllers. 2. PowerTools: best for advanced performance tuning
PowerTools exposes controls that may include CPU thread or SMT behavior, CPU frequency limits, GPU-related settings, TDP or power controls, and battery information. The available controls depend on the plugin release. Its strongest use is careful, game-specific experimentation—not turning every slider to its maximum. The PowerTools guide discusses per-game controls and the risks of aggressive settings.
Install it from Decky’s browser, open it through Quick Access, and leave the defaults in place initially. Change one setting at a time, then test the actual game for several minutes before saving a profile. Lower power is not automatically better: disabling threads or imposing an unsuitable frequency limit can cause stutter, crashes, or worse results. Higher power can increase heat and reduce efficiency; neither higher frame rates nor longer battery life are guaranteed.
Skip PowerTools if you do not have a specific tuning goal. If a game becomes unstable or performs worse, reset its profile to defaults, restore CPU threads or SMT if changed, remove frequency and TDP limits, then test again before trying another adjustment.
3. ProtonDB Badges: best for checking compatibility
ProtonDB Badges surfaces links or indicators for community reports about running Windows games through Proton on Linux. Install it from Decky’s browser, then look for the badge or compatibility link while browsing relevant Steam library or store pages. Decky lists it among its compatibility-oriented plugins at decky.xyz.
Use the rating as a prompt to investigate, not as a promise that the game will work on your Deck. Reports can be old, incomplete, or based on a different SteamOS, Proton version, or hardware setup. Read recent reports for notes about launchers, multiplayer, anti-cheat, and workarounds. Skip it if you do not use ProtonDB information or mainly play games without relevant reports.

- 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
- OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
- Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
- Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
- Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.
4. SteamGridDB: best for non-Steam game artwork
SteamGridDB lets you add or replace library artwork, including covers, banners, logos, and icons. It is especially useful when non-Steam games or emulated titles appear with blank or inconsistent images. Decky describes SteamGridDB as artwork management for Gaming Mode at decky.xyz.
Install it from the plugin browser, open the artwork controls for a game, choose an image type, preview the result, and apply it. Repeat for other artwork formats if needed. Community submissions vary in quality and may crop poorly in a particular layout; syncing or changing a library can also overwrite custom artwork. Skip it if you do not mind the default library presentation.
5. Storage Cleaner: best for reviewing leftover cache data
Storage Cleaner helps inspect and selectively remove shader-cache and compatibility data, including data that may remain after uninstalling games or changing Proton versions. Its repository describes these functions at the Storage Cleaner project.
Install it from Decky’s browser if it is available, scan storage, and review the categories and paths it presents before selecting anything. Remove only items you recognize as no longer needed. Do not assume every cache is useless: games and Proton may rebuild data, so the amount of space reclaimed varies and may not last. Steam’s built-in storage manager remains useful for ordinary library cleanup. Skip this plugin if you are not comfortable reviewing file categories before deletion.
6. AutoFlatpaks: best for people who use Desktop Mode apps
AutoFlatpaks helps update Flatpak applications from Gaming Mode, reducing the need to switch to Desktop Mode for routine app updates. Decky lists Flatpak-related functionality at decky.xyz; third-party coverage has also described AutoFlatpaks for this purpose at Windows Central.
Install it from Decky’s browser, open its settings, review which Flatpak apps or sources it detects, then run updates or configure the available update behavior. It does not replace Desktop Mode for permission changes, repository issues, or app-specific troubleshooting. Skip it if you use the Deck only for Steam games.

- Quickly capture, play back and transfer Full-HD and 4K video
7. DeckSettings: best for a game’s starting configuration
DeckSettings surfaces community recommendations for game settings, which may cover graphics, frame-rate targets, power limits, or resolution. Decky describes it as a way to find recommended game settings at decky.xyz.
Install it from the plugin browser and open it while viewing or launching a game. Treat a recommendation as a starting point: decide whether it suits your priority—battery, image quality, or frame rate—and test before keeping the changes. Advice may become stale as games and SteamOS change, and it may refer to different Steam Deck hardware or Proton versions. Skip it if you prefer to tune every game yourself or do not want community profiles.
8. Audio Loader: best for custom interface sounds
Audio Loader applies community sound packs to the Steam Deck interface. It pairs naturally with CSS Loader for cosmetic customization, but it does not improve performance or battery life. Decky lists it among its sound customization plugins at decky.xyz.
Install it from the plugin browser, browse packs, preview one if possible, and apply it. Disable the pack in Audio Loader if sounds become irritating or stop working after a client update. Community packs can vary in quality and licensing; skip this plugin if you prefer the standard sounds.
Recommended Free Tools
Build a small plugin setup instead of installing everything
- For a beginner: Try ProtonDB Badges for compatibility context and SteamGridDB if your library includes non-Steam games. Add CSS Loader only if you want a different interface.
- For a power user: Pair PowerTools with DeckSettings only when you are prepared to verify each suggestion in-game; ProtonDB Badges can provide additional compatibility context.
- For Desktop Mode app users: AutoFlatpaks can help with app updates, while Storage Cleaner gives you a way to review selected leftover data.
- For cosmetic customization: CSS Loader changes the visual interface, Audio Loader changes sounds, and SteamGridDB improves library artwork.
Troubleshoot Decky and plugin problems
Decky or its menu disappears after an update
Decky’s project notes that it can sometimes disappear after a SteamOS update. Switch to Desktop Mode and run the official installer again, choosing Latest Release first. Return to Gaming Mode or restart the Deck. If that does not restore it, the project’s documented troubleshooting suggests trying the prerelease branch and checking its current known issues. A prerelease is a troubleshooting step, not the default choice.

The plugin menu is missing or the store will not load
Restart the Steam Deck so the Steam Client and Decky start afresh. If Decky returns but the panel remains broken, disable the newest plugin if possible, then reinstall the stable Decky release using the official installer. A plugin update, a disabled plugin, or a loader incompatibility may be involved; avoid deleting directories based on an unverified online fix.
A theme makes text or controls look wrong
Open CSS Loader, disable the active theme and snippets, and restore the default appearance. Restart Steam to check whether the interface recovers. If CSS Loader itself is inaccessible, use Decky’s official troubleshooting guidance rather than removing files blindly.
PowerTools makes a game unstable
Reset the affected game profile, restore any disabled CPU threads or SMT, and remove custom frequency or TDP limits. Test the game at stock settings before changing one control again.
