Fix The Division 2 Freezing, Crashing, and Co-op Problems on PC

Separate a local freeze from a co-op connection failure, then work through safe fixes for The Division 2 on Windows PC.

There is no single fix for every The Division 2 freeze or co-op failure. First check Ubisoft’s live service status and identify what is actually failing: a local lockup, crash, launch problem, or multiplayer connection. Then follow the matching steps below—solo play working while co-op fails, for example, points toward networking or sessions more than graphics settings.

Start by identifying the failure

“Freezing” can mean anything from a brief stall to a PC-wide lockup. Note what happens immediately before and after the problem, and preserve any error code rather than guessing what it means.

What you see First areas to check
Picture stops, but audio continues Overlays, graphics driver, rendering mode, configuration or shader-cache files; note whether a disconnect follows.
The whole PC becomes unresponsive Overclocks or undervolts, temperatures, memory, page file, and display-driver stability.
Game exits to desktop Game files, overlays, graphics driver, configuration, or the anti-cheat component present in your installation.
Stuck at launch or an anti-cheat screen Restart the launcher chain, verify files, and use the installed anti-cheat component’s official repair option if available.
Solo works, but invites or co-op fail Service status, Ubisoft Connect session, NAT, firewall, router, or DNS.
Freeze is followed by a Delta error Record the exact code and check service status and connection stability; a freeze followed by a disconnect is not the same diagnosis as a persistent local lock.

Ubisoft support has specifically distinguished freezes that later disconnect with an error from a stuck image with audio still playing. Its troubleshooting discussion also recommends checking drivers, overlays, background applications, and connectivity.

Check service status and basic requirements

  1. Open the official Division service-status page and refresh it when the failure occurs. It reports live operational, maintenance, problem, or outage information; an old status check cannot establish what is happening now.
  2. Ask your co-op partner whether they see the same error, and test entering the game world solo. If both players are affected at once, investigate a service or shared session before changing both PCs.
  3. Record the exact error, when it occurs, storefront, Windows version, CPU, GPU and driver, RAM, and whether the game is on an SSD or HDD. Note whether it happens in solo, co-op, a particular mission, or after a repeatable amount of playtime.

The Steam technical listing specifies a 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 system, CPU support for SSE 4.2 and AVX, at least 8 GB RAM, and 77 GB available storage; its minimum graphics examples are an AMD R9 280X or NVIDIA GTX 780 with 3 GB VRAM, and its recommended examples are an AMD RX 480 or NVIDIA GTX 970-class GPU. These are listed baselines, not a guarantee of smooth play on every configuration. See Steam’s technical-support listing. Steam ownership also does not remove the Ubisoft Connect dependency: Ubisoft says Connect may be required to install, launch, access, or unlock its content, and an account or internet connection may be required in some cases. Ubisoft’s January 2026 terms describe these requirements.

Try the low-risk fixes first

Restart the full launcher chain

  1. Exit the game, then exit Steam if you use it.
  2. Exit Ubisoft Connect completely, including its system-tray process.
  3. Restart Windows, open Ubisoft Connect and let it update, then open Steam if applicable.
  4. Launch from the storefront where you own the game. Avoid stale desktop shortcuts or multiple launch attempts while testing.

Ubisoft describes Ubisoft Connect as its desktop service for accessing Ubisoft games and notes that it requires a Ubisoft account. A Steam launch can therefore fail in the handoff between clients even when Steam itself opens normally.

Verify the installation

  • Steam: Steam Library → The Division 2 → Properties → Installed Files → choose the option to verify installed files. Menu wording may change with Steam updates.
  • Ubisoft Connect: Open the game’s management or properties controls and use verify or repair if available. For a Steam-owned copy, verify in Steam first, then allow Ubisoft Connect to finish any synchronization.

Verification can redownload missing or damaged files. A first launch may take longer while caches are rebuilt. If the problem immediately returns after a clean verification, a driver, overlay, configuration, network, or hardware issue is more plausible than persistent file corruption. Avoid reinstalling the full game before these checks; it will not fix a router or overheating problem.

Temporarily disable overlays and monitoring tools

Overlays and monitoring utilities can hook into a game process. For a controlled test, turn off the Ubisoft Connect and Steam overlays, Discord overlay, NVIDIA or AMD overlay, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics Server, and capture, RGB, or peripheral utilities. Close unnecessary background applications and disconnect nonessential USB devices temporarily. Ubisoft support has recommended these kinds of isolation steps in its Division 2 freezing guidance.

Test the same activity for 15–30 minutes. If the issue stops, turn applications back on one at a time to find the conflict. This removes features such as chat overlays and recording while testing, so restore only the tools that do not reproduce the fault. Running as administrator is not a general fix; use it only as a short diagnostic if permissions appear to be involved.

If the game freezes or crashes

Update or roll back the graphics driver

Install the current driver for your GPU from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel, then reboot. If the trouble began immediately after a driver update, test the previous stable version using the manufacturer’s rollback or clean-install process. Remove GPU overclocks and undervolts while diagnosing.

Test one rendering and display change at a time. If the game offers DX11 and DX12, try the alternate mode; neither is universally more stable. The game’s PC feature documentation lists uncapped frame rates, variable-refresh support, HDR, and display options, which are useful features but can also be compatibility variables on a particular setup. Ubisoft’s PC features article describes those options.

  • Cap the frame rate below the monitor’s maximum refresh rate instead of leaving it uncapped.
  • Temporarily lower resolution scale and extra detail or streaming settings; test without HDR or variable-refresh features.
  • Try borderless or windowed mode instead of exclusive fullscreen.

If reduced settings change how often a freeze occurs, investigate GPU load, temperature, VRAM, driver, or rendering mode. If settings make no difference and only co-op fails, graphics are unlikely to be the main cause.

Check heat, memory, and the Windows page file

If the whole PC locks, or a failure appears after a consistent length of play, monitor CPU and GPU temperatures, memory use, and available disk space while reproducing it. Remove CPU, GPU, and RAM overclocks or undervolts. Close memory-heavy applications such as browsers with many tabs, video capture, or virtual machines. If other games also crash, test system memory and check Windows Event Viewer for display-driver resets or hardware errors.

Ubisoft support has advised leaving the Windows page file automatically managed in a Division 2 freezing discussion. To check it, search Windows for “Advanced system settings,” open Performance → Settings → Advanced → Virtual memory, enable “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives” if it is not already selected, and restart. Wording varies by Windows build; do not substitute a guessed fixed size.

Keep free space on the Windows drive. Also test without unnecessary USB hubs, headsets, controllers, or capture devices attached. Ubisoft support has recommended disconnecting extra USB devices and updating motherboard-related drivers in the same discussion. Obtain chipset or BIOS updates only from the motherboard maker.

Reset local configuration only with a backup

A fresh settings folder can help test for damaged local configuration or shader-cache data, but this is a community-reported diagnostic, not a guaranteed Ubisoft fix. A community report identifies the user-data location as commonly under:

  1. Close the game and Ubisoft Connect.
  2. Copy the entire folder to another location as a backup.
  3. Rename the original folder, for example to Tom Clancy's The Division 2.backup.
  4. Launch the game and let it create fresh files, then test before restoring settings.

This can reset graphics settings, keybindings, and other local preferences. If it does not help, close the game and restore the backup. Do not permanently delete the folder before copying it.

If launch fails at the anti-cheat screen

Do not assume every current PC installation uses the same anti-cheat component. Check the game’s current installation for the anti-cheat executable or folder named in the error, then use that component’s official repair or reinstall function if one is provided. Verify the game files afterward.

Check whether antivirus or endpoint-security software quarantined a relevant file, but do not disable protection permanently or download replacement files from unofficial sites. The BattlEye FAQ explains that its protection may block interfering files or software and can affect server connections in some cases; that does not establish BattlEye as the cause of every Division 2 launch or co-op problem.

If solo works but co-op does not

Test both players and reverse the host

  1. Have each player launch the updated game separately and enter the world solo.
  2. Confirm both can access the online/social interface and remain connected for several minutes.
  3. Have Player A host and Player B join, then reverse the host order.

If only one person fails, focus on that player’s PC, account session, or network. If both play solo but neither can join the other, prioritize NAT, firewall, router, DNS, or session issues. If one host works and the other does not, the failing host’s firewall or NAT is a stronger suspect than graphics settings.

Work through the network path safely

  1. Restart the modem and router. Use Ethernet for a test if possible.
  2. Disable VPNs and proxy software temporarily.
  3. Allow both the game and Ubisoft Connect through Windows Firewall. If you temporarily test with third-party security filtering disabled, restore it immediately afterward.
  4. Open Command Prompt and run ipconfig /flushdns, then restart the PC.
  5. Check the router’s UPnP setting. Ubisoft support has recommended checking UPnP, router security level, DNS flushing, and general connectivity in its support guidance.
  6. If name resolution remains suspect, test a different DNS resolver. Ubisoft support cited Google DNS addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4; this is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix.

UPnP can simplify NAT traversal, but its behavior and security implications depend on the router. Avoid lowering router security unless you understand the trade-off, and restore any temporary change after testing. Do not forward arbitrary ports based on old advice: no current port list is established here. DNS changes cannot fix an outage, damaged game files, or an anti-cheat failure.

Check account session and game version

Both players should be fully updated and using compatible versions and content. Restart Ubisoft Connect on both PCs; sign out and back in only after recording any authentication error. Check the live service page again if invitations suddenly stop working. Steam players still rely on Ubisoft Connect as part of the launch and account chain.

Know what an error code can—and cannot—tell you

Preserve the exact Delta, Mike, ECHO, anti-cheat, or Ubisoft Connect error text, including capitalization and numbers. Without a current verified interpretation for the specific code, assigning it a cause risks sending you down the wrong path. A freeze followed by a Delta error merits a connection and service check; a persistent freeze with audio continuing warrants local graphics, overlay, and configuration testing first.

When to escalate instead of reinstalling again

A failure limited to one mission or location, one that started immediately after an update, or one that persists across clean file verification may be a title-specific bug. Record where and how it reproduces; repeated reinstalls are unlikely to help if the same trigger remains. Ubisoft lists current seasons and updates on its official Division 2 page, so check current notices rather than relying on launch-era fixes.

If basic diagnosis does not resolve it, contact Ubisoft Support with:

  • Exact error code or message, date, and approximate time.
  • Whether it happened solo or in co-op, and the activity underway: launch, loading, fast travel, mission entry, joining a group, or combat.
  • Storefront, install location, Windows edition/build, CPU, GPU, RAM, and graphics-driver version.
  • Crash-report ID, if Ubisoft Connect displayed one, and any relevant Windows Event Viewer entry.
  • A short reproduction sequence and the troubleshooting steps already attempted.
