The standard console’s U.S. launch MSRP was $699.99, and it launched on November 7, 2024. This is a historical guide to that preorder window, not a current stock or pricing update: the available information does not establish PS5 Pro inventory or price in August 2026.
When PS5 Pro pre-orders opened
Sony announced that pre-orders would begin September 26, 2024, through PlayStation Direct in markets where the service operated. Participating retailers in the United States and other scheduled markets were due to open pre-orders on October 10. Availability and timing varied by country, so the U.S. schedule should not be treated as a worldwide one. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement set those dates and the November 7, 2024 launch.
The standard PS5 Pro and the limited 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro bundle were separate listings. The Anniversary bundle could sell out while the standard console remained orderable; one listing’s status did not indicate the other’s availability. Contemporary reporting documented that distinction during the preorder period (TechRadar’s live coverage).
U.S. launch price and what the standard console included
The standard PS5 Pro’s U.S. launch MSRP was $699.99, before tax. That is its launch price, not a verified current 2026 price. Sony announced regional launch prices of £699.99 in the U.K., €799.99 in Europe, and ¥119,980 including tax in Japan; local storefronts and retailer terms determined what a buyer actually paid.

Sony’s PS5 Pro product page identifies it as an all-digital console and lists the included items.
The disc-drive cost to plan for
There is no disc drive in the standard PS5 Pro box. If you use physical PS5 games, supported PS4 game discs, or movie discs, you need Sony’s compatible Disc Drive for PS5 Digital Edition consoles as a separate purchase. It supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback. Sony says internet access is required to pair the drive with the console during setup. The drive’s current price is not established here, so the $699.99 launch MSRP is not the full cost for a physical-media buyer.

How the preorder checkout worked
PlayStation Direct required a PlayStation account sign-in in contemporaneous coverage, and stock could change while people were ordering. These steps describe a sensible checkout for that preorder window; delivery estimates and requirements could differ by territory.
- Sign in to the PlayStation Network account associated with the correct region.
- Open the PS5 Pro listing and verify that it is the standard console, not the 30th Anniversary bundle.
- Check the delivery estimate shown for your address.
- Confirm your shipping address, billing details, and payment method.
- Add the console to the cart and review the total, including tax and any separately selected accessories.
- Complete checkout, then save the order number and confirmation email.
A product page being visible did not guarantee that stock would remain available through payment. Contemporary reporting described fluctuating stock. If availability changed before checkout completed, checking the listing again later or trying a participating retailer during its scheduled window were options; an accepted preorder was not the same as immediate shipment.

How the 30th Anniversary bundle differed
Sony’s limited 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro bundle paired the 2TB console with retro styling and matching accessories: DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers, a charging station, console cover, vertical stand, and collector’s items. The cover was not a disc drive; the bundle did not include the actual drive. Sony detailed the contents in its 30th Anniversary announcement. It was a distinct limited-edition offer, not the standard $699.99 model.
What PS5 Pro was designed to improve
Sony positioned PS5 Pro around an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), its image-reconstruction technology. The aim was better image quality and more consistent performance in supported games, including options that combine higher visual settings with higher frame rates. Sony also described enhanced image quality for selected PS4 games.

Those benefits are not automatic or identical across the library. PS5 Pro enhancements depend on the game: a title may receive a dedicated update, improve ray tracing or resolution, offer a different graphics mode, or show little meaningful change. Results also depend on the game’s settings and the display. Sony’s announcement describes the intended features, not a universal frame-rate or image-quality guarantee.

- A stronger fit: players seeking Sony’s higher-end console, with a 4K or high-refresh-rate display, who value supported games’ ray tracing, image quality, or performance options and want 2TB of built-in storage.
- Less compelling: owners satisfied with a standard PS5, players mostly using a 1080p display, and budget-conscious buyers who do not need Pro-specific enhancements.
- Decide around physical media: digital-only players can use the console as sold; physical-game and disc-movie users need to account for the separate drive and its setup requirement.
- Wait for game-specific evidence: if your main expectation is that every game will run at a higher frame rate, Sony did not promise that. Check what enhancements the games you actually play support.
What is known about availability now
The preorder and launch dates above describe 2024. Sony’s current product page confirms the PS5 Pro product listing, but the available information does not establish live August 2026 inventory or a current price. Check the official PlayStation Direct listing for current status rather than relying on a historical preorder report.
