The Commodore C65 Was Never Released—Here’s What Its MEGA65 Revival Actually Is

The C65 was a canceled Commodore prototype. The MEGA65 is a modern FPGA-based recreation for C65 and C64 compatibility—not an official reissue.

The Commodore 65 was a prototype successor to the Commodore 64, not a computer that reached normal retail release. Its modern counterpart is the MEGA65: an open-source FPGA computer designed for C65 and C64 compatibility, rather than a reissue of original Commodore hardware.

What was the Commodore C65?

Developed inside Commodore Business Machines around 1990–1991, the Commodore 65—also known as the C64DX—was intended to advance the C64 while retaining compatibility with it. Commodore canceled the project before retail release, so there was no standard, mass-produced C65 for consumers to buy. A small number of prototypes later reached collectors after Commodore’s liquidation. HotHardware’s account and the Commodore 65 reference entry describe the canceled prototype project.

What the prototype was meant to offer

The C65 concept paired C64 compatibility with more capable graphics, sound and memory, plus a built-in 3.5-inch disk drive. Commonly cited prototype-era specifications include a CSG 4510 processor running at about 3.54 MHz, VIC-III graphics, 128 KB of RAM with expansion options, and dual SID audio. Those figures describe the prototype design, not a released retail specification.

Why original C65s are so rare

Because the C65 was canceled, only prototypes—not a retail production run—entered circulation. The Commodore 65 reference entry summarizes estimates of roughly 50 to 2,000 surviving units. That wide range is an estimate, not a verified count of every surviving machine.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Rarity and practical usability are different things. An original prototype is a scarce piece of computer history, with condition and completeness varying from unit to unit. HotHardware reported historical examples of an eBay listing around $28,000 in 2018 and a UK auction result of roughly $17,100 in 2019. Those old listing and auction figures are not a current valuation or a reliable guide to what a particular machine is worth today.

What the MEGA65 revival is—and is not

The MEGA65 is a modern, open-source FPGA computer designed to reproduce the C65 experience and support C65 and C64 software. It is neither an original Commodore prototype returned to production nor simply software emulation. FPGA hardware implements computer logic in configurable chips; the MEGA65’s design uses that approach to recreate and extend the experience of the original machines. HotHardware’s report describes the project and quotes developer Paul Gardner-Stephen: “The MEGA65 is designed to offer both C64 and C65 compatibility and is already highly compatible. Because it is open-source, compatibility will continue to improve over time.”

Reported hardware and modern conveniences

In the product generation described by HotHardware, the MEGA65 uses a Xilinx Artix-7 200T FPGA and a second MAX 10 FPGA for recovery. The reported configuration includes a C65-style molded case, Cherry MX-based keyboard, HDMI/digital video, 100 Mbps LAN, two SDHC slots, a 40 MHz 8-bit CPU, 384 KB of fast RAM, serial RAM expansion, VIC-IV video, and multiple SID and FPGA audio options. An IEC port supports real Commodore 1541, 1571 and 1581 drives. These details apply to the reported generation; buyers should check the maker’s current product information for the specification of any available unit.

Which option fits: a prototype or a MEGA65?

What matters Original Commodore C65 prototype MEGA65
What it is Original prototype hardware from Commodore’s canceled C65 project. Modern FPGA-based computer designed for C65 and C64 compatibility.
Authenticity Authentic Commodore-era artifact. Not original Commodore hardware; a compatible recreation.
Availability Rare collector-market machines; no normal retail release. Purpose-built modern product; current stock and terms require a live seller check.
Use and features Prototype condition and completeness can vary. Reported features include digital video, SD storage, LAN, expanded memory and support for compatible real disk drives.
Price evidence Historical examples reported by HotHardware: about $28,000 for an eBay listing in 2018 and roughly $17,100 at a UK auction in 2019; neither establishes current value. HotHardware reported a €666.66 preorder price in October 2021; that historical price does not establish today’s price.

If the priority is owning original Commodore hardware, the prototype is the authentic artifact, but the collector market brings scarcity and condition risk. If the priority is playing, developing for, or exploring a C65-style machine with contemporary connections, the MEGA65 is the practical route. Its stated compatibility is an ongoing project rather than a guarantee that every C65 or C64 program and peripheral will work identically.

Buying a C65-style computer today

The €666.66 figure reported for MEGA65 preorders in October 2021 is historical context only. It should not be treated as the current price or as evidence of present availability. Before ordering, check the current manufacturer or seller listing for stock, price, shipping to your location, warranty, and exactly which hardware generation and accessories are included. The research cited here does not establish current inventory, regional terms, or Amazon availability.

For an original prototype, verify provenance, condition, included parts and working status with the seller; historical auction examples are not a substitute for a current, comparable sale. The MEGA65 is the clearer choice for regular use, while a prototype purchase is primarily a collector decision.

How the 2025 Commodore revival relates to the MEGA65

Commodore’s current corporate activity is a separate story from the MEGA65 project. According to Commodore’s official FAQ, the company says it completed the acquisition of the whole Commodore Corporation and 47 surviving original trademarks on 31 July 2025. It describes a “Retro and Modern” strategy beginning with the Commodore 64 Ultimate. The official pages cited here do not announce a new official C65 product, so the trademark acquisition should not be read as confirmation of a C65 relaunch.

For makers considering a Commodore-branded project, the company’s licensing page describes brand licensing and marketplace selling as separate or combinable paths, with projects generally expected to have reached at least prototype stage before review. It lists a 6.4% fee for each partnership path; check the live terms and eligibility before relying on them.
