Choose the VIVE Pro 2 for high-resolution, wired PC VR; choose the VIVE XR Elite for standalone VR, mixed reality and portability. They are not simple old-versus-new versions of the same headset: the Pro 2 depends on a gaming PC and SteamVR base stations, while the XR Elite can run compatible apps on its own and stream PC VR when wanted. If you are buying new in 2026, check current availability and consider HTC’s newer VIVE Focus Vision before committing to either older model.

These are manufacturer specifications, not guarantees of identical results for every user. Perceived clarity and field of view vary with fit, eye position, IPD, rendering settings and the application. HTC’s comparison page and the Pro 2 specifications provide the detailed figures.
The biggest difference: PC-only versus standalone
VIVE Pro 2: a dedicated SteamVR PC headset
The Pro 2 sends video from a gaming PC over DisplayPort. The computer renders the game, and SteamVR Tracking 2.0 uses external base stations to locate the headset and compatible controllers or accessories. This setup suits players who prioritize PC-rendered detail and established Lighthouse-tracked gear, but it requires a compatible computer and room setup.
VIVE XR Elite: standalone first, PC VR when needed
The XR Elite has a Snapdragon XR2 processor and can run compatible standalone content without a PC. It also supports PC VR streaming over USB-C or Wi-Fi through VIVE Streaming. That flexibility makes it a different kind of headset—not a direct performance replacement for the Pro 2.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which headset has the better image?
On paper, the Pro 2 has the stronger display specification: 2,448 × 2,448 pixels per eye, compared with the XR Elite’s 1,920 × 1,920. Its advertised refresh-rate ceiling is also higher at 120 Hz, versus 90 Hz for the XR Elite, and HTC lists up to 120° horizontal field of view for the Pro 2 and up to 110° for the XR Elite.
That makes the Pro 2 the more compelling choice for PC simulations, cockpit instruments, small text and detailed scenes—provided the PC can render them well. In PC-streamed content, the XR Elite’s lower panel resolution is a meaningful limitation relative to the Pro 2. Its standalone processor is designed for standalone applications, not to reproduce the performance of a high-end gaming PC.
HTC requires DisplayPort 1.4 with Display Stream Compression (DSC) for the Pro 2’s full-resolution mode, as well as a newer graphics card class such as NVIDIA RTX 20-series or AMD Radeon 5000-series or later. The stated minimum GPU for basic operation is not a promise of smooth full-resolution play at 120 Hz. See HTC’s full-resolution guidance.
Neither advertised field of view is a guaranteed view for every face. Lens sweet spot, IPD adjustment, eye relief, facial fit and glasses can change what a wearer actually sees; an advertised maximum should not be read as a measured experience for all users.

Tracking and room setup
Pro 2: external Lighthouse tracking
The Pro 2 uses SteamVR Tracking 2.0 and is compatible with Base Station 1.0 and 2.0 hardware. HTC lists room-scale coverage of up to approximately 5 × 5 metres with two Base Station 2.0 units and up to 10 × 10 metres with four. Base stations need suitable placement and power, and their view of the play area can be blocked by walls, furniture or the player.
Lighthouse tracking is generally the better fit for applications using multiple tracked objects, VIVE Trackers or full-body tracking, and for users who already own a compatible SteamVR setup. Check the hardware generation before combining components: HTC says different base-station versions cannot be mixed in the same setup. Its guidance on hardware compatibility covers the limitation.
XR Elite: inside-out tracking
The XR Elite tracks itself and its controllers with onboard cameras, so it needs no base stations and is easier to set up in a changing room or while travelling. HTC’s business specifications list tracking in play areas up to 10 × 10 metres; actual results depend on lighting, visible room detail and occlusion. Inside-out tracking can also lose sight of controllers when they move outside the cameras’ view.
Neither system is simply “better” in every situation: Lighthouse entails installation and extra equipment in exchange for an external tracking setup, while inside-out tracking reduces setup friction and makes the headset more portable.

Standalone VR and mixed reality
Only the XR Elite operates independently of a gaming PC. Its color passthrough lets users see the surrounding room through the headset, and it supports hand tracking. Those capabilities make it suitable for supported mixed-reality applications, but passthrough hardware does not mean every VR game supports room-aware MR features.
The headset can be used with its battery cradle for a conventional configuration or with the cradle removed in a lighter glasses-style setup intended for seated media or productivity use. HTC describes the cradle as providing up to approximately two hours of continuous power. Actual runtime varies with the app, brightness, streaming use and battery condition; it is not a guarantee for every session. Details are on HTC’s XR Elite product page.
PC VR connections and wireless play
Pro 2: wired DisplayPort
The Pro 2 connects through the VIVE Link Box 2.0. Connect its USB 3.0, DisplayPort and power leads to the link box, then connect USB to the computer and DisplayPort directly to the graphics card—not the motherboard. Attach the headset cable to the link box, power it on, then start VIVE Console and SteamVR. HTC’s connection instructions show the setup.
For a laptop, a USB-C socket alone is not enough: it must support the required DisplayPort mode and route that signal to a suitable discrete GPU. The Pro 2’s direct wired connection avoids the PC-video streaming path used by wireless headsets.

XR Elite: USB-C or Wi-Fi streaming
For PC VR, the XR Elite can receive content over USB-C or wirelessly using VIVE Streaming. Wireless quality depends on the PC, router and access-point placement, interference, distance and streaming bitrate. Wi-Fi 6E support is useful only when the network and surrounding conditions support it; the label does not guarantee low latency or an artifact-free picture.
Pro 2 wireless is an add-on compromise
The Pro 2 can use HTC’s VIVE Wireless Adapter, but HTC specifies 90 Hz with the Pro 2 and a reduced wireless resolution mode rather than the headset’s maximum wired resolution. The adapter also adds cost, battery management and compatibility considerations. The XR Elite has wireless PC streaming as a built-in use case, but its results are still network-dependent; choose between them based on the tracking and image-quality trade-off you can accept, not on the word “wireless” alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Comfort, audio and controllers
The Pro 2 uses a conventional adjustable halo-style strap with integrated on-ear headphones that can be removed. HTC also lists support for high-impedance headphones through the headset’s USB-C analog signal. Its Full Kit controllers use SteamVR tracking and have trackpads, grip buttons and dual-stage triggers; HTC lists around six hours of controller use per charge.
The XR Elite’s rear battery cradle acts as a counterweight in standard use, and the headset has integrated speakers, dual microphones and two 6DoF controllers. HTC lists up to 15 hours of controller battery life in its comparison material; that figure is for the controllers, not the headset’s battery cradle.
Best Value

These designs serve different routines: a wired, seated PC session may suit the Pro 2’s strap and integrated audio, while the XR Elite is more convenient for moving between rooms or using without a PC. Neither can be called universally more comfortable on specifications alone; facial interface, head shape, glasses, cable management and session length all matter.
PC requirements and total system cost
What a Pro 2 setup needs
HTC lists an Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD Ryzen 1500 equivalent or better, 8 GB or more of RAM, Windows 10 or 11, USB 3.0 or newer, and DisplayPort 1.2 or newer for the Pro 2. For basic operation, HTC lists GTX 1060- or Radeon RX 480-class graphics; full-resolution mode calls for DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC and a newer GPU class. Those minimums do not mean a game will run at full resolution and 120 Hz: the needed performance varies by title and settings.
Budget for the complete system, not just a headset: depending on the version and what you already own, that can mean base stations, controllers, a gaming PC, mounting hardware and possibly a wireless adapter. Headset-only buyers should confirm exactly which components are included before buying.
What an XR Elite setup needs
Standalone XR Elite apps use the headset’s onboard platform and do not require a gaming PC. A PC is still needed for PC VR streaming, and wireless streaming also calls for a suitable network. A spare battery or a streaming cable may be useful for a particular setup, but neither changes the headset’s display or standalone capabilities.
Prices and availability in 2026
HTC announced US prices on August 28, 2024, of $699 for the Pro 2 headset and $1,199 for the Full Kit. Those are historical official prices, not verified August 2026 prices. HTC’s current US Full Kit page says the product is no longer available and points shoppers toward VIVE Focus Vision; that does not establish that every regional version or used unit is unavailable. No current XR Elite US price is established by the cited product information, and HTC’s business page includes commercial-use terms, so confirm consumer availability and warranty for your region before purchase. The dated pricing announcement is HTC’s August 2024 price notice.
Which headset should you choose?
Choose the VIVE Pro 2 for high-end PC VR
- You already own compatible SteamVR base stations and controllers.
- Your priority is PC-rendered detail, 120 Hz capability or the wider advertised FOV.
- You play simulators, detailed PC VR games or full-body-tracked applications.
- You want Lighthouse-tracked accessories and accept the wired setup and external hardware.
Choose the VIVE XR Elite for flexibility
- You want standalone VR without a gaming PC.
- You value portable use, the glasses-style configuration, color passthrough or hand tracking.
- You want inside-out tracking without installing base stations.
- You expect to stream PC VR wirelessly and accept that quality depends on your PC and network.
Consider another headset if neither matches
If you are buying new in 2026, want newer HTC hardware or expect ongoing retail availability, compare the VIVE Focus Vision before choosing an older model. HTC’s current comparison page positions it as a newer option with standalone and PC VR capabilities, mixed reality, eye tracking and full-body tracker support. It is an alternative to consider, not a reason to treat the Pro 2 and XR Elite as equivalent products.
