On December 17, 2023, Tech Times reported that Netflix was working on a game based on Squid Game and had targeted 86 games for subscribers during 2023. The report described a project in development, not a finished game or a confirmed 2023 release: it gave no title, developer, launch date, or platform details for the Squid Game project. Tech Times’ December 17, 2023 report is the basis for those claims.
What Netflix’s reported Squid Game project involved
The December 2023 report said the game would draw on challenges familiar from the series. It did not identify specific rounds or explain how they would work in a game. There was no announced genre, game title, named developer, trailer, or gameplay demonstration in the report.
Nor did it establish whether the project was being made by a Netflix-owned studio or an outside partner. “Working on” signaled reported development, but the available details did not show how far the project had progressed or whether it would reach release.
What the 86-title figure meant
The 86 figure referred to Netflix’s reported target for games it planned to offer subscribers in 2023. It was a roadmap number, not a verified final count of games released. The report did not document which titles made the target, whether the figure included games still in development, or how availability varied by country or device.

It also did not mean Netflix had 86 Squid Game games planned. The adaptation was discussed as one project within a much broader gaming effort.
How the project fit Netflix’s gaming strategy
Netflix was using games to extend its entertainment offering beyond watching films and series. A game based on a high-profile show could give subscribers another way to spend time with a franchise between seasons, while adding value to a membership that already included games. That is a strategic rationale, not evidence that the reported project had a particular design or release plan.

The 2023 report pointed to Netflix’s acquisition of Night School Studio, known for Oxenfree, and Spry Fox, known for Cozy Grove, as well as gaming studios in Helsinki and California. Those examples suggested investment in both internal development and a wider games operation—not merely a one-off tie-in to a television series. The report’s studio and acquisition details describe Netflix’s activity at that time.
Existing Netflix games were a separate part of the story
The report also cited Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition as a prominent mobile game offered through Netflix. It illustrated a different strand of the strategy: bringing an established game property to subscribers, alongside developing or commissioning new games. Its inclusion did not indicate that the Squid Game project was complete, available, or connected to the trilogy.

The report framed Netflix games as a subscriber benefit, but it did not establish universal device support or country-by-country availability for every title. It likewise did not say whether the prospective Squid Game game would be on mobile, TV, PC, console, or more than one platform.
Why a Squid Game adaptation could work—and what could be difficult
Squid Game has recognizable rules and high-stakes contests, which could translate into short competitive rounds. But that is an opportunity for a game designer, not a confirmed description of Netflix’s project. The series’ grim tone and lethal consequences would also need careful handling in an interactive format, especially if the game were aimed at a broad subscriber audience.

Other design questions would matter if the project became a competitive multiplayer game: whether rounds stay interesting after repeated play, how players are matched, and how cheating or abusive behavior is managed. None of those features was confirmed in the December 2023 report, so they remain considerations rather than known problems with a released game.

- Identity and studio: No official title or developer was named in the report.
- Timing and status: It supplied no release date or launch window, and did not establish that the game was close to release.
- Platforms and access: It did not say which devices would support the project or whether it would be available in every market.
- Gameplay: Single-player or multiplayer, specific challenges, characters, progression, rankings, and any connection to the show’s plot were not detailed.
- Business model: The report did not explain whether the game would include advertising, in-app purchases, or other monetisation beyond its place in Netflix’s subscriber offering.
- Which Squid Game: The report mentioned the popularity of Squid Game: The Challenge as context, but did not establish that the game was based on the reality series or that its format influenced development.
Without those details, claims that players would recreate every television challenge, compete online, play as show characters, or see the game “soon” go beyond what the report established.

How to read the December 2023 news now
The headline captured two distinct things: a reported Squid Game project and Netflix’s broader target of 86 games for subscribers in 2023. Neither point, as reported, confirmed that the adaptation launched that year. Tech Times’ article is dated December 17, 2023, and should be read as historical reporting about a project then described as in development—not as a current release announcement.
