How to Use Offline Mode on Steam Deck

Prepare Steam Deck for offline play by updating and testing each game, switching Steam to Offline Mode, and handling local and cloud saves safely.

To play Steam Deck games without internet, prepare them while connected: sign in and save your credentials, update Steam and each game, launch each game once, then put Steam in Offline Mode and disconnect Wi-Fi. Only games that are installed and do not require an online connection, external launcher, or other online authentication service are dependable offline candidates.

What Steam Offline Mode does—and what it does not do

Steam Offline Mode lets supported games start without an active connection to the Steam Network. Steam features that need a connection—including the Store, Community, downloads, updates, and Steam Cloud synchronization—are unavailable until you reconnect. Online multiplayer and services hosted by a game’s servers will not work offline. Valve’s Offline Mode guidance also notes that games requiring an active connection or an external launcher will not work in this mode.

Offline Mode is not the same as switching off Wi-Fi. Offline Mode prepares Steam to run supported games without its network connection; turning off Wi-Fi prevents the Deck from reconnecting or reaching other online services. Use both for travel. Neither setting makes an online-only game work offline, and a game’s own offline or single-player setting is separate from Steam’s mode.

Which Steam Deck games are likely to work offline?

A good candidate is fully installed, has playable content that runs locally, and does not rely on a persistent connection, external launcher, online license check, or server-hosted progression. “Single-player” alone is not a guarantee: a game may still require a publisher account or launcher, especially on first launch.

Steam Deck Verified and Playable ratings do not certify offline access. Those ratings address compatibility considerations such as controls, display, text legibility, and Proton behavior—not whether a game’s servers, DRM, or launcher can be skipped. Test every game you plan to take rather than relying on its rating or the fact that it appears installed.

Prepare the Deck and test games before you leave

  1. Connect to dependable Wi-Fi. Open Steam > Settings > Internet to manage the Deck’s network connection. Menu labels can vary between SteamOS and Steam client versions. Valve’s Deck support page documents this settings area.
  2. Sign in and save your credentials. At login, enable Remember me and allow Steam to store credentials on the device. If Steam later requests a login while offline, Valve says there is no offline bypass.
  3. Update Steam and each intended game. Make sure downloads have completed; a queued or partial installation is not ready. Offline mode cannot fetch an update or finish an installation.
  4. Launch each game while connected. Complete first-run setup, account sign-in, launcher updates, component installation, and any other prompts. Reach the main menu or load a save so you know the full launch path works.
  5. Exit the game normally. Use its quit command, then close Steam normally. Valve warns that force-quitting Steam can interfere with information needed for Offline Mode.
  6. Let any cloud sync finish. If you want the current save available on another device, wait for Steam Cloud to complete its upload before disconnecting.
  7. Switch Steam to Offline Mode, then disconnect Wi-Fi. Use the client steps below, turn off the Deck’s Wi-Fi or use its current network-disconnection control, and launch each game again. This final test is the best way to catch a launcher or authentication requirement before travel.

Turn on Steam Offline Mode

Valve documents the Steam client workflow as Steam > Settings > Security to check the saved-credentials setting, followed by Steam > Go Offline… and confirmation. The documented path is for the desktop Steam client; Game Mode controls can differ as SteamOS and the client change. If you do not see a clear Offline Mode control in Game Mode, use Desktop Mode to access the client instead of assuming a particular Game Mode path.

To open Desktop Mode, choose Steam > Power > Switch to Desktop. Desktop Mode is a fallback for reaching the client controls; it is not required for ordinary offline play. After switching, select Steam > Go Offline… and confirm. Return to Game Mode if you prefer to play there. Valve’s Deck support instructions document the Desktop Mode route.

SteamOS and Steam client interfaces are updated continuously, so labels may vary slightly by version. The important sequence is to enter Offline Mode while still signed in and connected, then disconnect Wi-Fi.

What works offline, and what does not

Offline use What to expect
Installed single-player content Usually works if it runs locally and has no online or launcher dependency; verify each title by testing it.
Local saves and settings Available on the Deck, but Steam Cloud cannot synchronize while the Deck is disconnected.
Online multiplayer and live services Unavailable without a network connection; server-hosted progression may also be inaccessible.
Steam Store, Community, downloads, and updates Unavailable until Steam reconnects.
External launchers, online DRM, or account checks May block startup even when the game itself is installed; complete setup online and test.
Achievements Behavior varies by game. Some may be recorded and synchronized later, but this is not guaranteed.
Streaming and Remote Play Network-dependent features are unavailable when the required connection is absent.

Steam’s compatibility rating does not settle any of these network requirements. A game can be technically compatible with the Deck and still be a poor offline choice.

Protect saves while offline and when reconnecting

Offline progress is saved locally, but Steam Cloud cannot upload or download saves while the Deck is disconnected. If the game supports Steam Cloud, let the Deck synchronize before leaving and again after reconnecting. Steam Cloud transfers saves between devices; see Valve’s Steam Cloud documentation.

  1. Before disconnecting, exit the game normally and wait for any pending cloud operation to finish.
  2. During the offline period, save in the game as usual. Do not assume that sleep or suspension has uploaded progress.
  3. After returning, reconnect and let Steam Cloud synchronize before starting that game on another computer.
  4. If Steam reports a conflict, compare the timestamps and choose the file from the session with the progress you intend to keep. Do not choose “cloud” or “local” automatically without checking.

Steam Deck disconnects from Wi-Fi while suspended. For important or long-running sessions, save in the game and consider exiting before putting the Deck to sleep; Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ recommends backing up saves before suspending. If a game does not support Steam Cloud, consider backing up its saves yourself; save locations vary by game and how it runs, so there is no universal file path.

Fix common offline launch problems

“This game cannot be started in Offline Mode”

Reconnect to the internet, update Steam and the game, then launch it online. Complete any first-run installation or account and launcher prompts, reach a playable state, exit normally, and switch to Offline Mode again. Valve identifies outdated Steam or game files as a possible cause of this message. A status such as “100% – Ready” does not by itself prove the game will start offline.

Steam asks you to log in

Reconnect to Wi-Fi, sign in, enable remembered credentials, and repeat the setup and offline test. Valve says there is no workaround if Steam requires a login while offline; you need connectivity to sign in.

The game is installed but still fails to start

  • Check whether it opens an external launcher that needs an update, account sign-in, or connection.
  • Look for online-only DRM, a required account service, or server-hosted progression.
  • Confirm a download or first-run setup is not still pending.
  • If the game reaches Steam but fails for another reason, investigate compatibility or Proton behavior separately; an offline-mode setting does not resolve every launch problem.

Steam was force-closed or the Deck lost power

Start the Deck online, sign in if necessary, and repeat the Offline Mode preparation. Valve advises closing Steam normally rather than force-quitting because stored information is needed for Offline Mode.

Before a flight or trip: final check

  • Every intended game is fully installed and updated.
  • Each game has been launched online through its full startup path, including any launcher prompts.
  • Steam is in Offline Mode, and Wi-Fi is disconnected.
  • Each game has been test-launched after disconnection.
  • Important saves have been made and any desired pre-trip cloud sync has completed.

Do not rely on a fixed offline time limit: Valve’s public guidance does not establish one universal duration for every account and game. Test the titles you need before leaving, and reconnect periodically when practical, especially before travel or when a game has changed.
